ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are investigating an elaborate phone scam that cost an Encinitas woman ,400.Lauren Kennedy says she was driving to work Wednesday morning when she received a phone call around 8:30 a.m. She says she had just gotten off the phone with her mother when all of a sudden she was calling her back.But when she answered, it wasn’t her mother’s voice.“It was a man’s voice telling me he had abducted my mother and he was going to kill her if I didn't do exactly as he told me,” Kennedy said.Kennedy said it became so real when she heard her mother’s voice on the other line.“At that point, that’s when I knew it was real," she said. "I heard her in the background, and I thought for sure that they had taken her.”The man on the other line directed her to go to the nearest grocery store and put money into Money Pak cards. Then they demanded the card numbers over the phone and ordered her to destroy the cards afterward.They told her to cut up the cards and email them photo evidence that they had been destroyed.“At that time he hung up and never called me back,” she explained. “So within a minute or two, I called my mom’s phone and at that time, she answered.”That’s when Kennedy’s realized she had fallen victim to an elaborate phone scam.The Sheriff’s Department says the scammers used a “spoofing device” to make it look like the phone was made from her mother’s phone number.The scammers also called Kennedy’s’ mother in the middle of the fake ransom call. They got her worked up by saying they had her daughter.“They just wanted her to be scared and sound scared. All I heard was her saying my name. I still can't believe it," Kennedy said. “I think their whole intention with calling her was to have her voice in the background while they were asking me to do whatever they wanted me to do." Kennedy says she not sure how the scammers got her information or her mother’s. She says she is always careful with her information and weary of scams.“I don't answer phone calls I don't recognize,” she said. “I don't answer blocked numbers. I let people leave voicemails to determine if it’s legit or not. I feel like the public needs to know about this (scam) because if I can fall for this, anybody can fall for this.”In an email, to 10News the Sheriff’s Department says people should hang up when they get phone calls like this and should immediately call law enforcement.Kennedy says that's what her mother did when she go the call, but for her  - it’s easier said than done.“This was life or death," she said. ESCONDIDO, CA (KGTV) -- Due to the pandemic, musical groups. both large and small, had to put their concert tours on hold. And that is exactly what happened to a mother and daughter duo from Escondido. Ruth and Emilia have had to find other ways to perform their environmentally themed music."It's always entertaining, you never know what is going to happen."The two have a love for children's music, as their lyrics, and performances always provide a learning experience for their young audience."We have two messages in our music," says Ruth. "One is taking care of the environment, and the other is acceptance of others to make the world a better place." Emilia says one other goal is also to keep the music fun and lively. "So that it would be something grown-ups don't mind listening to in the car, but also that kids enjoy dancing to."Prior to the pandemic, Ruth and Emilia planned a summer tour of libraries, children's museums, and kids festivals, but when the Coronavirus hit, those plans changed."Our CD release party was canceled because it happened the same day all the stay at home starting taking place."So the duo has had to adapt, and change the way they could reach their audience."We found other outlets, like doing live shows on Facebook and on Instagram. And even seeing if we could expand to people we wouldn't necessarily see on our tour."However, some good news came from the pandemic, as it brought mother and daughter closer together. Emilia has made her way back to Escondido for the time being, from her home in Los Angeles. "We don't get to see each other everyday," says Emilia. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A beloved custodian at an elementary school in Encinitas is recovering after a spider bite led to an amputation."He's happy. He's smiling. Thankful he's alive," said Megan Luce, PTA President at Park Dale Lane Elementary School.Guil Aguilar has been a custodian at the school for more than five years."His spirits are so high when I visited," said Luce.Luce says his ordeal began at work, just before Thanksgiving break. Aguilar says as he was moving trash cans near a dumpster, he saw spiders but didn't think anything of it. After he left the area, he felt a twinge in his foot. He went with family to visit relatives in Arizona during Thanksgiving and his bite began to swell. He was admitted into a hospital, then transferred to an Encinitas hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a venomous spider bite. The type of spider is unknown. The treatment was not enough."There was an infection that they tried to clean out. The infection resulted in amputation of his foot and partial leg," said Luce.Luce says Aguilar handled the difficult news by focusing on the bright side."He was okay with it. He'd rather his foot be gone than his life," said Luce.As news of his ordeal spread, parents at the school rallied."I was heartbroken. He's such as an amazing, amazing person ... Always happy. He's always there to help. Goes over and beyond what he's supposed to do at the school," said Luce.The parents organized a meal train and a Gofundme campaign to help his family, including his five children, with expenses."He's not just a janitor. He's part of the community and part of the Park Dale Lane family," said Luce.The Encinitas Union School District issued the following statement: "The situation that you are inquiring about involves one of our employees and is currently under investigation by the District. Due to privacy rights and confidentiality laws, we are unable to provide an update on the employee ... In an abundance of caution, the District has taken the necessary precautions to ensure that all areas of campus have been inspected and are safe. ESCONDIDO, Calif (KGTV) -- A Palomar Water delivery man is being credited for saving the life of an elderly woman who fell and couldn't get up to call for help. On Monday, Marco Perea showed up to deliver water for his 88-year-old customer in Escondido. When he knocked on her door, he could hear her, but she wouldn't come to the door. After several attempts to get her to open the door, she was able to tell him that she'd fall on Sunday afternoon and hadn't been able to get up since then. Perea called 911 and paramedics and firefighters were able to make entry into the apartment. The woman was rushed to the hospital. Perea says the woman does have a caregiver, but only from Monday through Fridays. The woman's condition is still unknown. 755
