SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego officials Wednesday named former men’s head basketball coach Lamont Smith as the college employee involved in the campus admissions bribery scandal known as “Operation Varsity Blues.” The initial indictment, released earlier in March, alleged real estate developer Robert Flaxman paid about 0,000 to get his son in the “side door” with the help of a USD coach. The UTEP administration and athletic department will have no further comment on this matter," the university said in a statement.Smith played for the Toreros in the late 90s and graduated from USD in 1998 with a degree in communications. He was hired to coach the men's basketball team in 2015.In 2018, San Francisco Police arrested Smith on suspicion of domestic violence at the team's hotel. The woman told police that she and Smith, who is married with two children, were involved. USD put Smith on administrative leave following his arrest. Payton said any student who falsified or made misrepresentations on an application for admission could be grounds for disciplinary action, including expulsion. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- U.S Customs and Border Protection apprehended two suspects wanted in connection to both an attempted homicide and a homicide Wednesday afternoon. According to CBP, the incident began Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry after a 35-year-old U.S. citizen entered the crossing with two other U.S. citizen passengers, a 37-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman. The vehicle was escorted to a secure location for processing after officers were alerted that one of the travelers was wanted. After investigating the situation, officers learned that the driver, Monica Cecilia Jimenez was wanted for attempted murder and Omar Alapizco was wanted for homicide by the Oceanside Police Department for the same crime. U.S. Marshals and the Oceanside Police Department responded and took custody of both Jimenez and Alapizco. 861

"We wanted our military families to be confident the resources they depended upon would remain accessible."The resources mentioned include grab-and-go bags of non-perishable items, a Thanksgiving meal kit giveaway, mobile farmers markets, and healthy breakfast options for military children participating in distance learning.Currently, SDG&E has donated .5 million to the San Diego Foundation COVID-19 Community Response Fund. Their mom Rhian and her partner, Jeff Leardini, are determined to deliver some holiday cheer."There are so many families that are worried about how they're going to make it to tomorrow. Christmas is the last thing on their mind. We want to take that worry away," said Leardini.Leardini posted on the Nextdoor app an offer to buy and wrap a Christmas toy for any neighbors in need, no strings attached. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men convicted of leading a home-invasion robbery spree with five other people were sentenced to prison terms Friday.A judge sentenced 26-year-old Thomas James Smith to 85 years plus 50 years to life in prison and 22-year-old Aaron Rico III to 35 years plus 25 years to life in prison for their roles the series of violent break-ins.Smith and Rico were convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault in June.
