SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - During this LGBTQ Pride month, 10News is looking at the rainbow of leadership in San Diego. San Diego has more LGBTQ members in political office than you may realize. We met State Senate President Pro-Tem Toni Atkins at a coastal event for research on climate change. Atkins says it’s everyday attention to universal issues like this that further acceptance of openly gay leaders like her. Christine Kehoe was San Diego’s first openly gay politician. She was elected to the San Diego City Council in 1993 and went on to serve more than a decade in the State Assembly and Senate. “The fact is there are a lot of people who blazed trails to allow me to serve; to allow Toni Atkins, Jen Campbell, Georgette Gomez, Chris Ward….our cup really runneth over in San Diego." Assembly member Todd Gloria said no one should hide who they are. "I think I'm a better elected official because of who I am. I think more importantly, the people of San Diego want to know who their elected officials are." 1015

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- El Cajon police are investigating whether alcohol played a role in a crash Friday night that left several people injured, including six children.The crash happened Friday night on Pepper Drive in El Cajon. The collision involved three vehicles.In total, nine people suffered non life-threatening injuries, police said. No further details were given at this time. 392

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of miles from her hometown of Paradise, Ashley Ketcham watches in horror as the Camp Fire ravages her beloved community.She now lives in Escondido and first heard about the fire from her mother.“I kind of blew it off because we’ve had fires my whole life, and then she wrote me back again and said the CMA Church burned down," Ketcham remembers.RELATED: Camp Fire: At least 9 dead as fire incinerates N. California townAt first, she felt numb.“I woke up this morning and, um, a friend of mine said 'Is it ok to hate God right now?' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Drive through any neighborhood in San Diego these days, and you’re bound to see homes decked out for the holidays. This time of year also can signal a slowdown in the real estate market - and an opportunity for buyers.Germaine LaValade took advantage, and is about to own his first home. He’s in escrow for a four-bedroom home in North Pacific Beach, listed for .17 million. LaValade, a software engineer, said a big reason the seller chose him was because the sale would close before the end of the year for tax purposes.“Because we are renters right now we didn’t have any house to sell to buy this one,” LaValade said.A motivated seller is just one of the advantages a homebuyer may have in these winter months - far removed from peak summer season. Another help - interest rates, which have been on the rise, tend to soften as activity slows nationwide.“We’re seeing a lot of prices are coming down from the all-time highs that they were,” said San Diego realtor Gary Kent. “We’re probably off as much as 5 percent from the peak, peak, peak of the market.”But prices are still high in San Diego County. In October, the median sale price was 0,000, up more than 5 percent from a year earlier.While activity is thought to slow, San Diego realtor Michelle Silverman said some of her best months have been in December. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Friday, a San Diego woman recounted how she was sexually abused by her priest at St. Jude when she was young, hoping it would encourage others to come forward.Walking up to the church to speak she said she felt a wave of emotions, "My chest was heavy, my stomach was sick. I was catching my breath." She told 10News her name is Cynthia Ann Doe, keeping her last name private, wearing a scarf over her head and dark sunglasses, concealing part of her identity for fear of retaliation. She said she could still see the rectory, where Monsignor Gregory Sheridan lived, next to the church. In it's place is a parking lot.She depicted what her life was like when she was just five-years-old, "I had no one to protect me, my mother and my father divorced when I was four, my brother died months before that." She said they lived inside a brightly painted yellow apartment building, sitting just across the street. Ann Doe said she clung to her faith and her family was honored when Monsignor Sheridan took favor in their company. Alone in his bedroom, her lawyer said he violated her with his fingers.She said at that age she couldn't process what happened, "that you are worthless dirty, a bad person, so bad that even God must not love you, because your priest hurt you and made you feel nasty.""I'm asking anyone male or female who may be struggling with what happened to them by Father Sheridan to come forward and be heard," she said.That call growing louder as more cases arise across the country. Pope Francis issued the first law for officials worldwide Thursday, requiring them to report abuse to their superiors.The local Catholic Church also proactive, publishing a list of priests with credible allegations against them. Monsignor Sheridan listed at the bottom of page seven.The statute of limitations ran out for Cynthia decades ago, but she has one request of the Diocese, asking them to pay for her years of therapy, "I would like to be reimbursed, I can give them every bill from 1981." 2023
