SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 75,000 homes in San Diego are in areas that pose a "high" or "extreme" risk of wildfire, according to a new study by CoreLogic.That's the third most homes in the US, behind only Los Angeles and Riverside.In San Diego, the study found that it would cost .81 billion to rebuild all those homes.The news comes as San Diego, and California as a whole, are in the midst of a relatively tame wildfire season. According to Cal Fire, there have been 4,9267 wildfires so far this year. That's well below the pace of the last two years, when there were 7,571 fires in 2018 and 9,133 fires in 2017.Similarly, the amount of land burned by the fires is down in 2019. So far, 117,586 acres have been scorched. In 2018, the total number was 1,671,203 acres. In 2017, 1,240,606 acres were burned.Cal Fire says cooler temperatures and higher than normal humidity caused the number of wild fires to drop this year."When humidity is up, the fire doesn't burn as aggressively as it could if they were lower," says Cal Fire Captain Isaac Sanchez. "That's played a big factor for us this year."But, Sanchez warns that people shouldn't look at the low numbers and think the risk is also low. He says the next few months will have prime conditions for a devastating fire."We've seen the hottest days we're going to see, the temperatures have been warm, the humidity has been low," says Sanchez. "So the fuels that are in the hillsides right now are receptive to fires."Sanchez says people should remain fire-ready. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More victims have come forward, saying their financial advisor stole thousands of dollars in an alleged Ponzi scheme."He preyed on the elderly folks," said San Diego resident, Brian Taylor. Brian and his wife Sharon have been married for more than 50 years. Brian, a Navy veteran, said this is not how they planned to spend their retirement. "We enjoyed our lives. We don't enjoy our lives anymore," Brian said. Christopher Dougherty was their neighbor. Sharon said they knew their family well and often met for parties or gatherings over the years. They stated investing with Dougherty in the early 2000s. A few years ago, they moved money into his company C & N Wealth Management. The Taylors said Dougherty told them they were investing in tax-free municipal bonds. They learned later that was not true. "It was actually invested in heavy equipment," Brian said. "I couldn't believe it." They said it was all done without their knowledge. The couple learned about this just this past October. "He said, don't worry, you're getting your money back and we didn't know that was the day after he filed bankruptcy," Sharon said. The Taylors are the third couple Team 10 has interviewed regarding this alleged Ponzi scheme. Sharon and David Vega said Dougherty stole about ,000 from them. That money was meant to help their grandchildren when they go to college. "We have not received any funds back," Sharon Vega told Team 10.Diane and Jerry, who declined to use their last name, said Dougherty took more than million dollars from them, meant for their retirement. "We can't even afford a burial plot at this point," Jerry said. Late Tuesday afternoon, the Sheriff's Department confirmed a criminal investigation into Christopher Dougherty with at least 30 potential victims. Bankruptcy attorney Larissa Lazarus is with the Law Offices of Mark Miller. Their firm represents 11 people in the Dougherty bankruptcy case. "They are all just good, really kind people who unfortunately trusted someone who was a licensed financial advisor and wasn't actually looking out for their best interest." She said she could not say whether or not it was elder financial abuse, but Lazarus said Dougherty was "doing things he was not supposed to be doing as a licensed financial advisor." In 2011, Dougherty was charged with a felony for taking thousands of dollars from a youth sports league. He ended up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor and was sentenced to three years summary probation. Records from the Department of Insurance showed that Dougherty "took somewhere between ,000 and ,000 from the League's bank account" when he sered as volunteer treasurer. In a letter dated April 19, 2012, Dougherty wrote to the Department: ".. due to extreme financial hardship and personal issues, I suffered a lapse in judgment that was fortunately resolved within a short period of time due to my efforts." The scammers would demand money or threaten the victims with detention.In the case of phone scams, scammers would call and pose as an IRA employee or officer claiming to have an open case or, for international students, law enforcement of their home country. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New information from the Census Bureau shows that San Diego’s housing growth isn’t keeping up with our growth in population.Within the year spanning between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017, San Diego saw its population increase by nearly 13,000 people.According to the Census Bureau, though the population has increased, the number of new homes being built is actually slowing down.When you compare housing growth between 2000 and 2007 and housing growth between 2010 and 2017, San Diego County saw a major decrease in growth of new housing. San Diego was also ranked the 11th most populated city in the United States, according to the new data.
