LAHAINA, Maui (KGTV) - A wildfire put a twist on the Hurricane Lane response in Maui Friday.California resident Victoria Monroe is visiting Lahaina and posted photos to Twitter showing high winds slamming the Maui coastline. She also captured the brush fire moving toward the coast.The fire grew to 300 acres by Friday morning, with reports of structures lost. One woman suffered burns to her hands and legs.10News received an email from San Diego resident Jodi Vachon who owns a home in the fire area."I'm just worried about not only the hurricane but the fire as well. So, it's coming from both ends," said Vachon.Vachon told 10news her home is all right, but she's heard from neighbors in Maui that at least two homes have been lost.She said they're hoping Hurricane Lane will bring some heavy downpours to the burn area.Meanwhile, travelers at San Diego International Airport are prepared for a bumpy ride as they board flights to Honolulu, where the effects of Lane have yet to interfere with flights."I like a little rock and roll," said Dr. George Pratt, a Clinical Psychologist with Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.  He flew to a lead a seminar on the big island of Hawaii on the subject of success.As for a successful flight for nervous fliers, he said, "Meditate. Las Colinas Detention Center is getting accolades for their progressive design in Architectural Digest Magazine.The women's Santee facility opened in August of 2014. It has no bars, barbed wire. There's lots of palm trees, flowers and grass, all taken care of by the inmates. Here, they say, is opportunity to change your life."I was a month and a half pregnant when I got arrested, so I spent my whole pregnancy in jail, I gave birth in jail, she's with my parents, she's almost four years old," Kanya Arredondo said of her daughter Danya.She was locked up for a 5 year sentence for transporting illegal drugs."I missed everything, her first words, her first walking...I get 2-3 visits per week with her on the video screen," at Las Carolinas Kanya says they have a "Facetime machine".She said the atmosphere at the new facility allowed her to have a connection with her daughter, and the deputies who encouraged her to change.She's been taking classes, learned English and is on the Dean's List. She has a job ready when she gets out in 34 days."I don't ever want to come back to this place, even though, it's jail, and a lot of positive things came out of here, I still don't want to come back, at least as an inmate," she said she volunteered to start a Spanish book club to help other inmates follow her path to rehabilitation.Another inmate, Holly Combs, transitioned from the old facility to the new one as well."It's like a fight or flight situation... It's amazing how the trauma you just got used to it," Holly said referring to fights and drugs overtaking the cells.She said it all started when she lost her brother during a robbery. She felt responsible and turned to drugs, landing her behind bars. "My behavior started changing, i started taking every class, I take college courses here I'm on the dean's list and have a 4.0," she said.Her life changed when she came to Las Colinas' new facility."It just took someone to believe in me you know?" Holly said. She's out in about 50 days and has a job ready on the outside."There's a lot of programs here, if you want it you can have them... I could cry, I owe a lot to this place I really do.. I didn't think I could change and the whole way I think is different now." She said.According to the Sheriff's Department, inmate on inmate violence has been reduced by 56% since the new location opened.  2413

Legendary USA Gymnastics coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi said they did not know former team doctor Larry Nassar was abusing girls at their gymnastics facility and declined to take responsibility for his abuse."I feel extremely bad. I don't feel responsible, but I feel extremely hurt that this thing happened and it happened everywhere, but it happened here, also," Martha Karolyi said in an interview with NBC's "Dateline" that aired Sunday night.She said she's aware that people have questioned how the Karolyis, the most powerful figures in women's gymnastics, didn't know about Nassar."But if you couldn't suspect anything -- I heard during the testimonies that some of the parents were in the therapy room with their own child and Larry Nassar was performing this," she said, "and the parent couldn't see. How I could see?"The comments on the "Dateline" report are the first public statements from the Karolyis on the Nassar scandal. The report also included the first TV interview with McKayla Maroney, the gold medal gymnast who said she was abused hundreds of times by Nassar.Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics team doctor and Michigan State University physician, admitted in criminal court to using his influence as a trusted medical doctor to sexually abuse young girls over two decades. He was sentenced to at least 40 years and is currently serving time in federal prison on child pornography charges.The remarkable extent of his abuse has led to an array of lawsuits and investigations into how the institutions allowed the abuse to continue for so long.Bela and Martha Karolyi denied any wrongdoing or knowledge of Nassar's years of abuse at the Karolyi ranch under their supervision, and they positioned themselves as victims of his lies."This miserable man destroyed everything, whatever I -- I was working for. LA JOLLA, Calif., (KGTV)-- Several people at the University of California, San Diego [UCSD] were hospitalized early Saturday over alcohol poisoning, the school confirmed.A spokeswoman for UCSD told 10News that a total of seven people were taken to the hospital between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM Saturday for severe alcohol poisoning. The emergency calls came from three locations on campus. One was from the undergraduate dormitories at Eleanor Roosevelt College, and two ambulances were dispatched to the Graduate Housing buildings. The school could not confirm if the patients were UCSD students or guests. While drinking is allowed on campus for students 21-and-over, the spokesperson did not say whether the hospitalized people were of age.10News spoke to students who recalled a lot of partying going on campus Friday night, where students appeared to be celebrating the end of finals and start of winter break."It was finals week, so it was very hectic," third-year student, Tyla Turner said. "It's like, you've been so much in the books for three to four weeks, you can finally go out. And it's like once you haven't been doing it that much, alcohol poisoning comes faster. It just hits you like that, you know?"These incidents come just a month after Dylan Hernandez, a freshman at neighboring San Diego State University died, after falling off a bunk bed while heavily intoxicated. Hernandez allegedly attended a fraternity party the evening before the fall. Since then, the state University has suspended all fraternity activities.To prevent tragedies like this from happening, last year, UCSD implemented a special policy for situations involving alcohol and drug intoxication. They call it the Medical Amnesty Program [MAP]. MAP states that if a student or organization finds another student in need of medical attention after drug or alcohol intoxication, they can call their advisor or campus police for help. As long as that student only uses the MAP policy once within two years, he or she will not have to go through a formal student conduct process. Second-year student Sydney Brown said she had no idea this policy existed. But she appreciates that this is in place to protect her peers. "If you're ever in that situation, you don't want to get your friend in trouble. You don't want to get in trouble. But if it's a life or death situation, you got to do what you have to do," Brown said. UCSD said everyone transported to the hospital was treated for non-life threatening conditions. 2507

LA MESA (CNS) - The La Mesa Police Department will resume parking regulation enforcement citywide starting the second week of November, officials announced Wednesday.La Mesa suspended the issuing of parking tickets on March 17 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.Starting Monday, Nov. 9, La Mesa police will issue written citations for vehicles parked in violation of posted street sweeping routes, metered parking restrictions, curb time limits, commercial zones and 72-hour parking limits.The city of San Diego temporarily suspended parking enforcement on March 16, limiting enforcement to holiday or Sunday regulations only. San Diego resumed parking regulation enforcement citywide on Oct. 15. 709
