CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A survey of Chula Vista residents and businesses show the economic toll the pandemic has taken on the city. The results of the July survey were recently released. It polled 576 businesses and nearly 800 residents. It showed nearly all businesses have seen a decline in revenue during the pandemic. As of the end of July, only half of businesses surveyed were fully open. About half of the businesses in the report also decrease their workforce. It also said 60 percent of unemployment in the city is due to COVID-19 and many have struggled to find new job opportunities.60 percent of businesses surveyed said given current projections, they anticipate closing within six months.Alita Fernandez is the director of Play City in Eastlake, an indoor playground for children. She said her workplace has been closed since March.“On the business side, it’s been very tough, but also on the personal side,” Fernandez said. She is not surprised by the grim numbers reported in the survey.“There are expenses that need to be covered… money comes in, the same thing goes out,” Fernandez said. Except now, there is no money coming in for many businesses.Fernandez and 15 other employees have lost their jobs until the planned reopening in January 2021. She’s looking forward to the day they can reopen Play City safely.“It’s sad because we miss them all. It’s sad because I miss my job,” Fernandez said.Click here to see the full presentation. 1467

She's the oldest of three and stepped in as an extra parent growing up, as they didn't have a father."This is the thing I cared about most growing up, he [Omar] was like a child to me," Villegas said.Thinking about her 28-year-old brother, she dreams of what could have been, "going to his wedding. I miss not meeting my nieces and nephews, I miss not having cousins for my kids." She spoke publicly for the first time this year at Chula Vista Police's Evening with Heroes fundraiser."Once they came in I felt a weight lifted off my shoulder[s] and that's what they've meant to me, they have definitely been that strength I'm not," she said police showed her family kindness and empathy."[Detectives] who put their photo on their desk and said they're out there. They're going to find who's responsible for killing Omar," Chula Vista Police Chief Roxana Kennedy said."I slept under this very table here in the office because that's how important it is and how much dedication we need to put in these cases," Sergeant Lavar Brown said in a video played during the fundraiser.Chief Kennedy explained the annual event funds programs the department would otherwise have to do without, "for instance our Canine program, our Senior Volunteer program, our Explorer program," she said their innovative Drone program is also funded through donation dollars. The work they did on Medina's case, will felt by the family long after it's closed."I know I'm just a kid," Omar's nephew Arturo Jr. said at the podium, "but what happened to my uncle hurts me just as much as it did the rest of my family and I'm glad I got to share it with you." He said he was thankful for CVPD.Two men were arrested in connection with Omar's death, they will stand trial in October. 2289

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Surveillance video captured masked burglars as they went shopping inside a Chula Vista home last Friday. When Gerard arrived last weekend at his parent's home off Procter Valley Road, he was greeted with ransacked rooms. "Stressed and anxious walking through the home," said Gerard, who asked us not to use his last name.Off the master bedroom, he found a shattered sliding door and broken shutters."Shocked and nervous, because I had to tell my parents who were out of the country that their home had been broken into, and no one wants to hear that news," said Gerard.A motion activated camera revealed the intruders: two masked burglars, one with a flashlight and the other with a backpack, going from room to room around 8:30 p.m. In a second clip, they are seen emerging from the family room before heading toward a bedroom. Missing from that room is about ,000 worth of his mother's jewelry, most of which she bought herself."Worked her whole life as a nurse. Invested her money and paid for it herself. It's a lifetime of work," said Gerard.Gerard believes the intruders were no amateurs. The masks, gloves and heavy clothing they wore helped preventing any hair and DNA evidence from being left behind."They look comfortable, the way they move. They are professionals. They've done this before, and they will do it again," said Gerard.Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1453

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Seniors living at Volta Apartments in Otay Ranch say an elevator at the five-story complex has been broken for more than a month, leaving many residents feeling trapped. They also say management has been giving them the runaround, refusing to lay out a process or timeline for repairs."I would believe you probably two or three days, but not a month or two months. That's way too much time for the seniors," said the son of one of the residents.RELATED: Residents concerned over rash of vandalism in Chula VistaThere is a second elevator, but because of the large size of the complex, some residents now have to walk a city block to get there, which is beyond the capacity of some of the most disabled residents. "It's ridiculous. It's been over a month. How long do they have to wait?" the son said.10News left voice mails at the office and with the management company, but those calls were not returned. A visit to the office was unsuccessful, as the outside door was locked. 1014
