The Department of Justice announced indictments on Wednesday against four executives who were allegedly involved in a conspiracy to fix prices and rig bids for broiler chickens. Jayson Penn, Roger Austin, Mikell Fries, and Scott Brady were each charged with one antitrust charge in federal court. Penn is the President and Chief Executive Officer, and Austin is a former Vice President, of Pilgrim’s Pride, a chicken supplier headquartered in Colorado. Fries is the President and a member of the board, and Brady is a Vice President, of Claxton Poultry, a broiler chicken producer headquartered in Georgia.According to Pilgrim’s Pride, it provides 20% of all chicken consumed in the United States. Claxton Poultry says it produces 300 million pounds of poultry a year, and is a supplier for Chick-fil-A. The DOJ alleges that the foursome's actions caused chicken prices at restaurants and grocery stores to be impacted. “Particularly in times of global crisis, the division remains committed to prosecuting crimes intended to raise the prices Americans pay for food,” said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim of the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. “Executives who cheat American consumers, restauranteurs, and grocers, and compromise the integrity of our food supply, will be held responsible for their actions.”The executives face a maximum sentence of 10 years, and a million fine, if convicted. Broiler chickens are chickens raised for human consumption and sold to grocers and restaurants. A request for comment has been left for Pilgrim’s Pride. 1584

Missed the fact that it was directed at DJ’s of Pueblo, Colorado. “Armed” with that lack of knowledge, they decided to come after Gary Rison’s establishment in Clark County.“Even this morning, I responded to more negativity,” Rison said. He referred to an old restaurateur adage about how one negative review can reach 100 people, but one nice review might reach only five people. This had the same kind of impact. Comments to DJ’s (the one in Winchester, not Pueblo) Facebook page came from as far away Arkansas, and Nebraska. People there claiming DJ’s actions on that night to be “shameful,” and “disgraceful.” Rison and his daughter have responded to most of the comments, and many people deleted their negative posts once they had, you know, the facts. The National Hurricane Center said late on Wednesday that a disturbance in the northern Gulf of Mexico is nearing tropical depression status. The storm, which will likely become tropical storm Barry on Thursday, has become better organized. Even as just a tropical disturbance, the storm system has already caused massive flooding in the New Orleans area. Parts of the area had nearly 9 inches of rain on Wednesday, with more to come through Saturday. The latest projections take the storm to the Louisiana coast as a hurricane. Latest forecast models put the storm on the coast sometime Saturday. The forecast cone still keeps open the possibility the storm slides to the west, giving the Upper Texas Coast a direct hit.The hurricane watch goes from the Mouth of the Mississippi River westward to Cameron Louisiana.As of 10 p.m. CT, the storm is 240 miles southeast of Morgan City, Louisiana. 906
