SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld's newest roller coaster is set to open just in time for the summer. The park's Tidal Twister roller coast will welcome its first riders on May 24, after breaking ground just last October. Tidal Twister joins the park's other coasters, Electric Eel and Manta, in offering a different theme park experience than what SeaWorld is traditionally known for.The roller coast zips riders ahead at 30 miles per hour, before twisting and turning along a figure-8 track and through a Zero-G roll in the center of the ride, 16 feet above the ground.RELATED:New dive coaster 'Mako' coming to SeaWorld in 2020SeaWorld San Diego announces Tidal Twister coaster, annual pass programSeaWorld's new Electric Eel roller coaster opens to the publicDueling trains will race past one another on the horizontal track with riders sitting both backward and forward. The coaster doesn't brush education off to the side, though. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SeaWorld is seeing an unusually large number of sea lion rescues along the local coastline this winter."Most of those rescued are coming in emaciated and dehydrated," said Jennifer Zarate, SeaWorld Senior Animal Care Specialist.Zarate says since early December, SeaWorld has rescued 25 sea lions along the coastline."Definitely a little concerning," said Zarate. That is about three times the amount they normally see. Usually, rescue season begins in March, so these rescues are coming early. Those needing rescuing this winter are younger than normal, less than two years old. The cause is a mystery, but Zarate says those early winter storms could be playing a role. The big swells may be tiring the pups out, causing them to burn too many calories. The weather may also be impacting their food sources.."The winter storms may be pushing schools of fish out further than seal lion pups can get to. That's probably the reason why they might not find as much fish as they normally would," said Zarate. After being rescued by SeaWorld, the pups now doing well. So far, medical tests haven't turned up anything else unusual. The pups are gaining back weight as expected. Next week, the first three of those recently rescued will be released.SeaWorld says the coastline in Orange County has also seen an increase in sea lion rescues. SeaWorld says it will be prepared for a big rescue season if needed. If you see an animal in need of rescue, SeaWorld says keep your distance and call their rescue hotline at 1-800-541-SEAL. 1547

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Santee mother Carolan McCollough is hoping to bring babysitting into the 21st century for East County families. She's started a babysitting co-op so families can sit for each other for free. Rather than exchanging money, there's a point system. "I was just trying to find cheaper ways to babysit, and my mom told me about a co-op that people did way back when she was a mom," said McCollough.McCollough uses the platform Komae to organize the exchange. Two Akron, Ohio moms developed the app after they started an old fashioned co-op with ten friends. After one year, the group had saved ,000 collectively.RELATED: Home Swapping helps San Diego families take affordable vacationsHow the Komae App works:Download the app and fill in your profile.Invite friends to join your personal Village. Post sit requests and offer to help your friends. The app automatically banks points to keep it balancedSit for each other and don't pay sitters anymoreThrough the app, parents can list their kid's favorite foods, allergies, and nap schedules. You can also list the breed and habits of your pets. Anything to help your friends and sitters give the best care to your family. You can also use the app to arrange meet-ups with other parents to get to know them better. Eventually Komae will be rebranded as Wana.Right now McCollough only has a few members in her co-op but is hoping it will grow. The hope is parents in her network will not only gain more financial freedom but have the chance to go on a date night or run kid-free errands. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some of our toughest Marines have four legs. These military working dogs are trained and trusted to protect service members and civilians overseas and at home."The bond between handler and K-9 is indescribable. When I was assigned a dog, I could look at my dog and know what it needed before it could tell me, and vice versa," said Lt. Kristopher Evers, part of the military police force at Camp Pendleton. All military dogs begin their journey at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, selected for their willingness to work. After basic training, they're sent to a new post and assigned a handler. K-9's trained in the Military Working Dog Program at Camp Pendleton go on to either serve alongside military police on the base or in conflicts overseas. The Marine Corps has nearly 300 working dogs; the entire military has about 2,700, according to the United States War Dogs Association, Inc. Handlers use the Agility Course at Camp Pendleton to train K-9 Marines to perform outside their comfort zone, giving them the confidence to do the job. Dogs are tasked with jobs like detecting explosives, narcotics, and apprehending suspects."Training is consistent, it's every day, and it's all the time," said Evers. Evers says the dogs are very much Marines and an important part of their military family. One of the most famous K-9 heroes is Lucca, remembered for leading 400 patrols with no human casualties on her watch. Lucca retired after losing her leg to an IED and passed away in 2018."They're special, in my mind, they're special. They love to work, they love coming to work, they love seeing their handler, they love getting in that patrol car, they love putting that collar on - and they're just always happy, these dogs live in the moment," said Evers. You can send care packages to military K-9's and their handlers, learn more here. 1867
