LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- Los Angeles County's top public health official, who has led the fight against the coronavirus, said Monday her life has been threatened repeatedly but promised to continue to "follow the science."Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, issued a statement that began, as her daily briefings do, with a recounting of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths in the county to date and a moment to honor those who have been lost."COVID-19 has upended thousands and thousands of lives all across the nation. "I didn't immediately see the message, but my husband did, my children did, and so did my colleagues."One reason I handle these briefings myself is to shield the extraordinary team at L.A. County Public Health from these attacks which have been going on, via emails, public postings, and letters -- since March," she said. "It is deeply worrisome to imagine that our hardworking infectious disease physicians, nurses, epidemiologists and environmental health specialists or any of our other team members would have to face this level of hatred."Ferrer acknowledged the frustration many feel over stay-at-home restrictions that have lead to job losses and economic struggles, but made clear that even as these rules are being relaxed and businesses are reopening, the fight against the virus is far from over."We did not create this virus .... and while frustration boils over in our communities as people are done with this virus, this virus is not done with us," Ferrer said. "As public health officials, we try hard not to be influenced by partisan politics or public sentiment -- we must follow the science in order to save lives. And the science says if we don't change the way we go about our daily routines, we could pay for it with our lives or the lives of others around us."She urged people, as she does daily, to wear face coverings to stop the spread of the virus, comparing the masks to seatbelts, which the public also resisted."The data proves that seatbelts save lives, and the data also proves that wearing a face covering will help stop transmission of COVID-19, which will save lives. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The number of homeless people counted across Los Angeles County jumped 12% over the past year to nearly 59,000, with more young and old people and families on the streets, officials said Tuesday.The majority of the homeless people were found within the city of Los Angeles, which saw a 16% increase to 36,300, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority said while presenting January's annual count to the county Board of Supervisors.The previous tally found a slight decrease in the homeless population.Two years ago, voters passed a tax hike and housing bond to make massive investments to help solve the homeless crisis.Officials said Tuesday the same people have not remained on the streets.The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, a county agency, said it helped 21,631 people move into permanent housing during 2018 — a pace that could rapidly end homelessness if economic pressures had not pushed thousands more into the streets.About a quarter of the people became homeless for the first time in the past year, and about half of those cited economic hardship as the primary cause, the authority said.To catch up, cities need to overcome resistance to the placement of housing and shelters, officials said.Supervisor Janice Hahn called the numbers "disheartening.""Even though our data shows we are housing more people than ever, it is hard to be optimistic when that progress is overwhelmed by the number of people falling into homelessness," Hahn said.The Los Angeles County numbers mirror similar point-in-time tallies across California, as state officials struggle to address a lack of affordable housing. LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Actor Danny Masterson has been charged with forcibly raping three women in separate incidents between 2001 and 2003.Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey announced Wednesday that Masterson is being charged with three counts of rape by force or fear.The “That '70s Show” actor, now 44, is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman between January and December 2001, according to the district attorney’s office.In April 2003, Masterson allegedly raped a 28-year-old woman.And sometime between October and December of 2003, he is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman who he had invited to his Hollywood Hills home.Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller of the Sex Crimes Division, who is prosecuting the case, said all of the alleged crimes occurred at the defendant’s home.Masterson’s arraignment is scheduled for September 18.If convicted as charged, Masterson faces a possible maximum sentence of 45 years to life in state prison.The district attorney’s office says it declined to file sexual assault charges against Masterson in two other cases, one for insufficient evidence and the other based upon the statute of limitations for the crime alleged.The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division. 1295

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A third Los Angeles police officer has tested positive for the coronavirus and was exhibiting symptoms inside the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Division station for several days this week, according to the department.The officer, who had recently returned from a vacation out of the country, was "coughing and sweating" during roll call in Central Division, which patrols areas that include downtown L.A., two of the officials said.Despite protests from several officers in the station, the affected officer was allowed to work for at least two days this week, according to the Los Angeles Times.The officer was tested for the virus, and a positive result came back Saturday, according to three law enforcement officials. Additional officers who worked with the afflicted patrol officer were expected to be quarantined, officials said.Saturday night, the LAPD reported that it had disinfected all of the officer's work spaces and common areas inside Central Division."We have also identified anyone who may have come into contact with the employee and directed them to contact their healthcare provider for evaluation," the LAPD reported.The department said it also established guidelines for all employees who either exhibit symptoms of the virus or cone in contact with someone who may be infected.
