Former first lady Barbara Bush is in failing health, a source close to the Bush family tells CNN.At 92 years old, Bush has been suffering for some time and has been in and out of the hospital multiple times in the last year while battling with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, and congestive heart failure.The source said she is being cared for at her home in Houston and has decided she does not want to go back into the hospital.The office of former President George H. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Police apprehended a kangaroo that was on the loose Thursday morning in Fort Lauderdale.Residents living near North Andrews Avenue and 13th Street reported seeing a runaway kangaroo hopping through their neighborhood.Fort Lauderdale police officers arrived and, with the help of wildlife officers, were able to leash the kangaroo and guide the animal into the back of a police cruiser.It was not immediately known how the kangaroo made its way to Fort Lauderdale, but the marsupial avoided a trip to the slammer.Instead, the Australian tourist was taken to the South Florida Wildlife Center. For students at Jackson Memorial Middle School in Ohio, Tuesday wasn't a normal day. When a seventh-grade student pulled out a gun and shot himself, students began to panic.  Airyonna Haggerty, who is a sixth grader at the school, described the moment teachers told her to get inside the classroom.The 12-year-old heard teachers screaming to get inside the classroom and the next thing she knew, she was hiding and crouching down with her fellow peers near the teacher's desk."I dropped everything. My phone, my chrome book, my book bag and me and my friends ran into the classroom and then we all hid. We were probably there for about 20 minutes," said Haggerty.The principal of the school knocked on the classroom door and told the students and teacher that everyone had to go to another class."We started gathering our stuff and went into the hallway. Then we went to go open the door and it was locked," said Haggerty. For one Tennessee Spanish teacher, what began as free money for qualified students on the path to a career in education has turned into a two-year nightmare.“It has been wearing on me emotionally and mentally,” Kaitlyn McCollum said. In 2009, as a senior in high school, McCollum applied for and received the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant Program, also known as the TEACH grant. It paid for her undergraduate college.In exchange, McCollum agreed to teach a high-need subject for four years at a low income school, which she's been doing since graduating from Middle Tennessee State University in 2013. “The very basis of the TEACH grant is to promote teachers joining the field,” McCollum said. However, in 2016 that free money disappeared.“It was a huge slap in the face, huge slap in the face,” she said.  McCollum sent paperwork to Fedloan, the company that oversees the grant, on July 29, 2016. The deadline was July 31. She admits the paperwork might've gotten there a day or two late, but the next letter she received in August wasn't what she expected.“In a one line, very cold sentence, says ‘your grants have now been converted to loans, period,’” McCollum said. She now owes the ,000 she was given in grant money plus the accrued interest. “It was this instant overnight debt of ,000,” she said. McCollum immediately appealed, but was denied. She's contacted state leaders in Tennessee and spent the last two years going back and forth with Fedloan about the paperwork issue. She said they're missing the bigger picture.“If I’m saddled with ,000 plus accruing more interest, am I going to stay in education? Maybe not,” McCollum said. McCollum has learned since 2016 that thousands of teachers across the country are in the same boat. Firefighters are battling a massive blaze at a warehouse in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood.The fire was reported Saturday night and has impacted multiple structures in the area, said Seattle Fire Public Information Officer Kristin Tinsley.When firefighters arrived, they saw flames as high as 50-75 feet, Tinsley said.One warehouse has collapsed but no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, officials said.The building where the fire started is believed to primarily house lumber, Tinsley said.She told CNN affiliate KIRO-TV that crews were fighting the fire defensively, meaning they were not entering any of the structures that were burning. 694
