SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Diego-based rancher says their business has grown as the corporate meat industry struggles.In the past months, Doug Lindamood, of SonRise Ranch, says they've seen their ranch experience a surge in business.“Surprisingly, in an odd set of circumstances, we’ve had a ranch that’s been very successful during these times,” he said. He said their business has easily tripled since the beginning of the pandemic. They’ve seen more people seeking food safety, so they’re buying meat in bulk. The ranch typically sells about 10-12 half or full cows a year, but that’s recently increased to 10-12 a week. This boost comes as the industrial meat industry is hurting across the country. Lindamood said a handful of companies produce a majority of the meat in the U.S. and the big players have been hit with sick employees, causing closures and less supply. “Highly consolidated plants being affected by basically a pandemic which then has the potential to shut down a vast portion of our production,” he said. Lindamood adds this has been a ticking time bomb that needs to be addressed. “For every one of those small plants that shut down over the last 20 or 30 years, we lost a small piece of our soul with respect to connecting to our consumers,” Lindamood said. “We need not one or 10 of me — which there are maybe five or six of us in the Southern California region. We need 50 or 60 or 200 of us.” 1433
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- As of today, it is illegal to live in your car in the city of San Diego. This controversial law took effect right after yesterday night's City Council vote. Homeowners in many San Diego neighborhoods said it is about some regulation is enforced. But homeless advocates called it a human rights violation. 10News met with two "van-lifers," as they called themselves. One of them was 39-year-old Jason Thorwegen. He said he is a Southern California native, who has been homeless since childhood."I started being homeless at the age of 8 years old," Thorwegen said. He admitted, it has not been easy, and that he is not perfect. But he never thought he would be in trouble, while trying to stay out of trouble, inside his van. Tuesday night, San Diego City Council approved the updated the Vehicle Habitation Ordinance, after residents complained about health and safety. "People who live in my neighborhood are defecating and urinating on the street, I see it. and I live it," one lady said at the Council meeting Tuesday.RELATED: San Diego City Council passes restrictions on living in vehiclesStarting Wednesday, living in a vehicle is illegal on city streets between 9 pm and 6 am unless parked in a designated Safe Parking Zone. "It's kind of disheartening, to be honest, to see that it's not as comprehensive as it could have should have been," Teresa Smith said. Smith runs the non-profit organization, "Dreams For Change," which provides 60 safe parking spaces throughout the city. The city currently has 120 spaces, with plans to offer more this year. "Even though as much as they try to say it was not around criminalization, I do not see how it is not," Smith said.10News also spoke to "van-lifer," Maria Ennis. She plans to get the ACLU on her side, to fight that the untimely law, is a human rights violation. "If they are making more parking lots, why don't they make the parking lots first? And then try to make that law?" Ennis asked.Thorwegen said the new lots would not change his lifestyle."I have anxieties that prevent me from living inside," Thorwegen said. He said he has non-combat-related PTSD and other illnesses. That is why started "Van for a Plan."The Go-Fund-me campaign asks people to donate old vans. He then converts them to be provided to clean, homeless veterans. "We want them to do the work, and that way, they can earn the vans," Thrrwegen said. He is working on his second van now. But now with this new ordinance, he is worried his efforts will become mute."What didn't help was when people made it illegal for me to be. You know, illegal for me, to be," Thorwegen said.The city said officers would first have to be trained about the new ordinance before issuing tickets. But Smith anticipated people would likely find other ways to avoid the consequences."So one of the issues we suspect is going to start, is people will start moving right outside the city limits. SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - New recommendations aim to help the thousands of teenagers living with depression who are suffering in silence. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for primary care doctors to screen young people. They say 2 out of 3 depressed teens are not being identified by their doctors and not getting the care they need. One survey doctors can give to patients is just two questions, another is nine. The purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis but rather screen for depression in a "first step" approach. San Diego Pediatrician Jaime Friedman believes it's a positive step to help young people and that it will be fairly easy to incorporate into visits. She will soon be using tablets on which parents and teens can answer questions related to their visit, they'll also be able to conduct the depression screening on them. Doctors are also being advised to talk to families about safety plans, removing lethal medications or guns from the home to prevent suicide. The AAP recommends young people get screened at least once a year starting at age 12. 1144
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — For months, we’ve seen face masks in places they shouldn’t be: storm drains, streets, beaches, and parks.Now, we’re learning just how many could be flooding our oceans.“Once plastic enters the marine environment, it’s very difficult to move," said Dr. Teale Phelps Bondaroff, director of research for OceansAsia. The marine conservation group has been tracking the number of face masks washing up on a remote island south of Hong Kong since the pandemic started. “About six weeks after COVID hit Hong Kong, so late February, we began finding masks, and lots of masks," said Bondaroff. “What’s remarkable is we weren’t finding face masks before COVID.”Masks are made with polypropylene, which Bondaroff describes as thin fibers of plastic."The fact that we are starting to find masks that are breaking up indicates that this is a real problem, that microplastics are being produced by masks," he said.These tiny pieces of plastic can remain in the ocean for hundreds of years, threatening fish and even polluting the air.“The question that we couldn’t answer was how many are entering our oceans? We just didn’t know," said Dr. Bondaroff. OceansAsia launched a study to find the answer and recently shared its findings. Of the estimated 52 billion masks manufactured globally in 2020, it's believed 1.56 billion will enter our oceans this year, resulting in an additional 4,680 to 6,240 metric tonnes of marine plastic pollutionBondaroff says the report used a conservative loss rate of 3 percent, and the average weight of 3 to 4 grams for a single-use polypropylene surgical face mask, to arrive at the estimate.“The 1.56 billion face masks that have entered our oceans in 2020 are there for the long run. They will remain in the ocean for 450 years or more, and they’ll break into smaller pieces.”The report notes global sales of face masks surged from around 0 million in 2019 to 6 billion in 2020.“That’s important, we need to keep people safe, but at the same time that has a lasting impact on our environment, and we’re seeing that on the beaches," said Bondaroff. And he says, unfortunately, this problem makes up only a small fraction of the plastic pollution invading our oceans.The report asks people to wear reusable masks whenever possible, dispose of masks responsibly and reduce their overall consumption of single-use plastic. It also calls on governments to:Implement policies designed to encourage the use of reusable masks, such as releasing guidelines regarding the proper manufacture and use of reusable masks.Foster innovation and the development of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic masks.Discourage littering by increasing fines, and educate the public about responsible ways to dispose of masks.Repair and improve waste management systems to reduce losses and spillage. 2840
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Honor Flight is a National organization that takes older veterans to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials, and the nonprofit just announced that all flights in 2020 will be postponed. For Honor Flight San Diego, the two canceled trips in 2020 means 160 World War II and Korean War veterans will have to wait until May of 2021 to take the trip, putting a year and a half between trips. Nationally, an estimated 20,000 veterans are being impacted by 2020’s cancellations.Holly Shaffner is the Director of Public Relations for Honor Flight San Diego and said the local chapter is still trying to find ways to keep the excitement for the veterans who are unable to travel this year. She said one of the emotional surprises for the veterans on the trip is “mail call,” when they surprise the group with a package of letters from family, friends and strangers thanking them for their service. This is to pay tribute to getting letters from home while they were in the service.“In World War II they didn’t have the technology that we have today where you can do FaceTime and emails,” said Shaffner.Honor Flight San Diego has already collected about 1,900 letters that they had planned to give out to the veterans on the 2020 trip, so organizers decided to use these letters to lift the spirits of the veterans who now have to wait a year for the trip. Honor Flight will be putting together mail call packages to mail to the veterans homes for them to open, hopefully giving them something to look forward to.Shaffner said one of the hardest realizations for them is acknowledging that of the World War II veterans on the list, not all of them will still be alive.“The reality for us is that when we start making the phone calls for them to go on that trip in May, there will be veterans that have passed away and there will be veterans that cannot travel,” she said.She hopes sending the letters to their home will help keep their spirits high during this lull.Winona Ruth Gunther is 100 years old and is one of the World War II veterans who was supposed to go in 2020. She said she’s worried about public places right now so she respects the decision to wait until 2021.“At my age you really take a chance when you get into a crowd and an airplane particularly,” she said.She worked as a corpsman in the Hospital Corps of the Navy in World War II. She has stories of caring for injured people in California and says those hard memories are the ones that stay with her. She’s already seen many of the memorials in Washington D.C., but said she was looking forward to going with the Honor Flight group because of the connection they all will feel seeing these memorials together.“It’s the camaraderie that you have with people that have similar experiences that you look forward to,” she said.Now, she waits for May of 2021, with some surprise letters heading her way thanks to Honor Flight.Shaffner said another obstacle the nonprofit is facing is keeping funding up. When the veterans are taken to Washington D.C., they don’t pay a dime. Everything, from the flight to the food, is paid for by donations. She said it costs about 0,000 for the two trips from San Diego. Shaffner said right now, they only have enough money raised for one trip in 2021. She said if they could, they would take even more than the planned 160 people next year to make up for the two lost trips in 2020, but that would be dependent on funding, which isn’t possible right now. 3487
