MACAO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR) Legislative Election General Auditing Committee announced the official results of the election of the fourth Legislative Assembly of Macao on Tuesday night.     In line with the Basic Law, the new legislature is composed of 29 seats including 12 directly-elected seats, 10 indirectly-elected seats, and seven others which will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive.     A total of 122 candidates from 16 groups contested in the direct elections, while the indirect elections did not take place since only 10 candidates have been fielded by the four constituencies involved for the 10 seats.     Eight of the 12 candidates who won the direct elections were veteran lawmakers that have served their terms in the legislature, which includes Kwan Tsui Hang, Chan Meng Kam, Ng Kuok Cheong, Angela Leong On Kei, Jose Maria Pereira Coutinho, Lee Chong Cheng, Ung Choi Kun, and Au Kam San were the winners of the direct elections, while Ho Ion Sang, Mak Soi Kun, Chan Wai Chi and Melinda Chan Mei Yi become the new faces in the legislature.     For the part of indirect elections, the list of winners comprises Ho Iat Seng, Kou Hoi In, Fong Chi Keong, and Cheang Chi Keong of the industrial, commercial and financial sector; Lau Cheok Va, Lam Heong Sang of labor sector; Chui Sai Cheong and Leonel Alberto Alves of professional sector; Vitor Cheung Lup Kwan and Chan Chak Mo of social, cultural, educational and sports sector.     The election of the fourth term of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR officially started Sunday morning. The authorities delayed announcing the results of the legislative election because6,539 ballots were found to be spoiled, the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs committee said Monday.     Some 149,006 of the total 249,886 registered voters cast their ballots during the polling period, but 6,539 of these ballots were deemed as invalid, according to the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs Committee.     This year's voter turnout stood at 59.9 percent, compared with 58.39 percent in the previous legislative election in 2005.     The results of the legislative election still need to be submitted to the SAR's Court for final approval, and the confirmed results will be published on the SAR's Official Gazette on Sept. 30 at the latest.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November, a senior Chinese official told visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Beijing Tuesday.     State Councilor Dai Bingguo said China would work with the U.S. to ensure the success of this visit.     Steinberg, who arrived in China Monday, said President Obama was looking forward to his visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations.     Dai said relations between the two countries had developed vigorously with close exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office.     The two sides should work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties, Dai said.     A key mission of Steinberg's China trip is to prepare for Obama's visit. It is part of the senior U.S. diplomat's week-long tour of Asia, which also takes him to Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Tokyo.     He said Obama considered his meeting with President Hu Jintao in New York last week had given an impetus to bilateral ties.     Obama's visit would "mark an important milestone in building mutual trust and respect between the people of China and the United States," said a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing late Tuesday on his departure from China.     In a separate meeting with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, Steinberg reiterated that the United States would continue with the one-China policy and respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, which were considered by the U.S. government the crucial principle in handling bilateral ties.     After expounding China's stance on Taiwan and issues concerning Tibet and Xinjiang, Xi said respect and care for each side's core interests and major concerns was the key to the healthy and steady growth of ties.     Xi called on the U.S. side to handle concerned issues in a "prudent" and "appropriate" way, to safeguard China-U.S. relations.     Steinberg said President Obama had several times stressed the great importance of U.S.-China relations since he took office in January.     The United States hoped to reveal to the world through President Obama's China visit that the two countries were willing to jointly respond to global challenges, including the global financial crisis, terrorism and non-proliferation, he said.     Xi called on joint efforts from both countries to ensure "positive results" from Obama's China tour.     "President Hu Jintao had successful meeting with President Obama in New York last week, in which they reached new important consensus on promoting active, all-round development of bilateral ties," said Xi.     "China is ready to work closely with the United States to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, enhance strategic trust and substantial cooperation in various areas, and properly handle differences and sensitive issues," Xi said. 

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to advance cooperation with Turkey in combating terrorism to better fulfill the common task of safeguarding national unification and territorial integrity and opposing separatism, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Sunday.     Yang made the remarks when meeting in Beijing with Turkish State Minister Zafer Caglayan, who paid the visit to China as special envoy of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The visit "indicated Turkey's political will to further its relationship with China," Yang said during the one-hour meeting, adding China attached great importance to promoting the ties with Turkey.     China was ready to strengthen the bilateral relations on the basis of universally recognized norms of international relations, he said. BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's Supreme People's Court issued a new regulation Tuesday to encourage parties involved in conflicts to mediate for resolution.     The regulation is in response to a rapid increase in lawsuits during the past two years.     It clarifies transitional procedures for parties to cease actions in the people's courts and turn instead to industrial or community mediation.     The move is an attempt to bring social organizations into play at an action's early stage to ease public discontent and prevent aggravation of resentment and tension. It is in accord with the new objective of a harmonious society outlined by the Communist Party of China and the government.     According to the court's statistics, lawsuits for criminal, civil affairs and administrative issues submitted to courts around the country in 2007 increased by 7 percent from 2006 to 5,550,062 cases. The courts handled 6,288,831 lawsuits in 2008, 13.31 percent up from 2007.     "Entering a transitional period of development, Chinese society is encountering an increasing number of new contradictions and problems it has never before experienced," said court spokesman Sun Jungong Tuesday.     "Mediation bodies need to be strengthened to make a bigger contribution to the resolution of disputes," he said.     The regulation means agreements achieved in arbitration or mediation by administrative bodies, mercantile organizations and industrial groups will have the same force in law as those judged by the people's courts.     "The courts at all levels should guide mediation and arbitration methods in a scientific, fair and rational way as well as act as supervisors and executors of agreements," said Jiang Huiling, vice director of the SPC's judicial reform office.
