TAIPEI, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Governor of east China's Zhejiang Province Lu Zushan started an eight-day visit to Taiwan Wednesday with the aim of deepening economic and cultural cooperation between the two regions.Under the theme "Visiting Friends, Conducting Exchanges and Cooperation," the delegation will launch cooperation programs with Taiwanese counterparts in finance, agriculture, tourism, culture and education.The delegation will learn about Taiwan's experience in environment protection, disaster response and relief, and public services at the grassroots level.The delegation will also visit residential communities, villages and enterprises to communicate with local residents.Apart from provincial government officials, the delegation also includes entrepreneurs. One of the entrepreneurs is Ma Yun, CEO of Zhejiang-based Alibaba Group, the parent of Alibaba.com, the global e-commerce site for small and medium businesses that connects buyers and sellers.During a meeting between Lu and the Taiwan-based Kuomintang's (KMT) honorary chairman, Wu Poh-hsiung, Wednesday, both sides expressed their hopes to increase the number of Zhejiang residents visiting the island this year.Nearly 130,000 Zhejiang residents visited Taiwan last year, accounting for about 20 percent of the Chinese mainland's total, according to Lu.Both Lu and Wu expected the number of Zhejiang visitors to exceed 180,000 this year.Zhejiang is where many Taiwan people come from."More than one million Taiwanese people are natives of Zhejiang," Lu said.The province is also a magnet for Taiwanese investment. The trade volume between Zhejiang and Taiwan hit 9.06 billion U.S. dollars last year, according to Lu.Since the beginning of this year, leading officials from various municipalities and provinces - Shanghai, Hubei, Fujian, Guizhou, Qinghai, Shandong and Sichuan - and the ministries of commerce and agriculture have led delegations to Taiwan to boost cooperation and exchanges with the island.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health has said it will draw upon its experience from the H1N1 flu control to ensure prevention of the general flu, as the World Health Organization (WHO) announced plans for the post-pandemic period."Based on the experience from A/H1N1 prevention and control, we will revise emergency plans and will continue flu prevention efforts in a bid to ensure people's health," said a statement released late Tuesday by the ministry.Figures from the ministry show that the weekly new A/H1N1 cases have remained below 30 since mid-April. Further, no deaths have been reported for 12 consecutive weeks.While announcing the coming of the post-pandemic period, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan warned that the A/H1N1 virus will continue to spread as a seasonal flu for some years.Chan urged health authorities to maintain alert for the virus.So far, about 800 deaths from A/H1N1 influenza had been reported in China, Health Minister Chen Zhu said earlier.More than 100 million Chinese have been vaccinated against A/H1N1 flu as of May 14.The A/H1N1 virus was first identified in Mexico in April 2009. BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua)-- The amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) into China in May rose by 27.48 percent year on year to 8.13 billion U.S. dollars, said Yao Jian, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), Saturday.The figure brought the country's FDI to 38.92 billion U.S. dollars in the first five months, an increase of 14.31 percent from a year earlier.Yao said that in the first five months, FDI mainly flowed into the manufacturing sector, accounting for 47.32 percent of the total, despite a fall of 3.85 percent in the amount.The service sector saw actual inflow of the FDI up 32.05 percent from a year earlier, while FDI in the primary sector, including farming, fishery and forestry, rose 85.49 percent year on year, which accounted for 1.63 percent of the total FDI in the first five months.China approved the establishment of 9,638 overseas-funded ventures in the first five months, up 22.15 percent from the same period of last year.In May alone, the government approved 2,132 such companies, representing a year-on-year increase of 29.29 percent.

NANCHANG, July 31 (Xinhua) - More cities, counties and townships in China have implemented community correction programs instead of imprisoning not-serious offenders, according to a statement released Friday after a meeting held by the Ministry of Justice in eastern China' s Jiangxi Province.In the first half of 2010, the community correction programs were implemented in four more prefecture-level cities, 84 more counties and city districts, and 2,858 more townships and urban communities, it said.That means the programs are now in 222 prefecture-level cities, 1,420 counties and city districts, and 17,981 townships and urban communities.Further, ten provinces and municipalities, including Beijing and Shanghai, have the programs in all their townships and urban communities.About 486,000 offenders have been committed to community correction programs nationwide, up from 350,000 at the end of 2009.Only 0.2 percent of them committed offences again while they were attending the correction program, the statement said.
