SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Air Show announced this year's air and ground military event has been canceled citing the coronavirus pandemic.The 66-year-old air acrobatics demonstration is one of the nation's largest military air shows drawing several hundred thousand spectators over the three-day weekend event.MCAS Miramar tweeted, "Due to the continuing spread and health concerns of #COVID19, @MCASMiramarCA must formally announce the cancellation of the 2020 Miramar Air Show. It is a disappointment to us as well as many across the world, but the safety of our Marines and fellow San Diegans must come first."This is the first time the event has been canceled since 2013 when the U.S. Department of Defense slashed budgets due to a government shutdown.This year's event was scheduled for September 25-27. Officials said they are aiming to bring back the event next year.“While we had initially hoped to host the show and help usher in a re-opened San Diego, there are still a great many risks posed with a mass gathering of this size and scale to do it in a way that ensures our guests absolute safety," said Col. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One CHP officer is dead, two were injured in a shootout in Riverside Monday and one CHP officer was injured in El Cajon by a hit-and-run drunk driver Tuesday night. CHP is now examining their protocols, seeing if there are lessons to be learned from Riverside.10News spoke with a veteran CHP officer to find out what protocol is in place to protect officers.Veteran CHP officer Phil Konstantin dedicated a decade to the force and has many stories to tell. "Crashed into by vehicles, I've had to jump out of the way of vehicles, and I've been shot at," he said.Around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night a CHP officer was trying to remove debris from the 94 freeway when officers say a man drove into the center divide multiple times. The officer tried to wave the man down and was hit. The man drove away and was stopped a short time later.He was driving 13 mph in the shoulder with his hood obscuring the windshield. Our 10News Breaking News Tracker recorded the driver stumbling during his field sobriety test. The man was arrested for DUI.His girlfriend drove to the scene and was also arrested for DUI.Konstantin says a traffic stop is one of the most dangerous parts of their job.He said when they pull a car over, officers turn their wheels away from the shoulder so if their car is hit, it rolls into traffic instead of into the car the officer pulled over or the officer. He also said he kept a vigilant eye on the people in the car and on traffic."All of the sudden if I lose sight of you and you're jumping into the car very quickly, are you going for a gun like with what happened in Riverside?" He said being vigilant will save your life.In 1987 Konstantin's training was put to the test. "As soon as the car stopped moving someone got out of the passenger side and shot at us.'' He and his partner were working the graveyard shift and pulled over what they thought was a drunk driver. It turned out being a pair who had kidnapped a restaurant owner they robbed and they were trying to go to the man's home to ransack it."The guy aims at the car in general and then at someone who would've been standing by the driver's side door. Has I been standing at the driver's side door, I would've been hit by buckshot," he said staying in the car and ducking saved his life.He said any driver can help an officer by keeping their hands on the wheel, listening to an officer's directions, and telling an officer if they need to reach somewhere to get their license, so they don't think you will harm them. 2524

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One man was injured in a stabbing in Spring Valley Sunday evening, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.Deputies said that a man between the ages of 40 and 50 was transported to the hospital after another man stabbed him, and he is expected to survive.The call to the residence near Dale Avenue and S. Bonita St. came in shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday.Deputies said that a weapon was found, and they are currently investigating.This is a developing story. 10News will update as information becomes available.  559

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are looking for the thief who committed a brazen robbery at a South Park metaphysical shop, stealing a ,000 crystal ball in broad daylight in front of store staff and other customers.The theft occurred Monday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. at Crystal Blue Vibrations, San Diego Police said. "This was a lot worse than we thought," co-owner Andrew Lucas told 10News. "That's when we went to the video tape and it showed everything."The thief could be seen casually walking through the store, chatting with an employee behind the counter. He then walked over to the front display, which included several large crystal spheres. He reached in to grab an expensive one, but knocked over a shelf, leaving shattered glass all over and drawing the attention of the employee. However, it appears the employee did not realize the man was attempting to steal the item. While the employee was focused on cleaning up the mess, the the thief can be seen grabbing the crystal ball, placing it on the ground, dribbling it like a soccer ball to the front door, then bending over to pick it up and walk out. "I thought I'd seen it all," Lucas said. "Yeah, it's pretty brazen. It's heartbreaking."Lucas says he plans to limit how much access customers have to certain items in the future. "And more security, but I guess that's what the world is coming to."A police report has been filed. Lucas hopes someone may recognize the thief from the surveillance video and will come forward to identify him. 1513

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood. The shooting happened on 40th Street near National Avenue around 5:13 p.m., according to Captain Tom Underwood with the San Diego Police Department. In an evening update, Underwood confirmed that the suspect of a machete attack died at the hospital. Wednesday night's events started earlier in the afternoon on Boston Avenue, where police responded to several 911 calls for the machete attack. The suspect, identified Thursday as 48-year-old Vaughn Harrison Denham, wielding the machete is said to have known the man he attacked. 10News spoke to a man who lives at the home where the attack happened. He said the attacker is his sister's boyfriend. He said the boyfriend came over to the house and got into an argument with a family friend over a dog chain. The boyfriend then grabbed a machete and began striking the victim over the head, then to the rest of his body. That man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.Shortly after the machete attack, Denham was pointed out to police by witnesses.Denham had a three to four-foot metal chain in his hands when an officer approached, which he then began to swing at the officer, police said. The officer backed up, according to witnesses, telling Denham to drop the chain. When he failed to comply the officer used a taser, but it was ineffective and Denham continued to approach. At this point the officer fired his weapon at Denham, hitting him at least once. "The suspect then fought police, who tried to take him into custody," Underwood said. "He was ultimately taken into custody (and) immediately transported to the hospital, where unfortunately he did not survive his wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital."Those who know Denham told 10News he is usually a nice person, but he had been acting up lately. Neighbors said they saw him swinging around a bat a day before the attack.
