(HP) on Monday reported that its profit in the most recent quarter fell more than 90 percent with sales also declining.In the company's fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 ended Oct. 31, the company posted net earnings of 239 million U.S. dollars, compared with 2.54 billion dollars in the same period a year earlier.HP's net revenue for the quarter reached 32.1 billion dollars, down 3 percent year-on-year.Excluding one-time items, HP earned 1.17 dollars per share, which topped estimates of analysts.According to Thomson Reuters, analysts had expected earnings of 1.13 dollars per share on revenue of 32.05 billion dollars.It was the first earnings report since Meg Whitman took over as chief executive officer (CEO) of the information technology giant on Sept. 22, replacing Leo Apotheker."HP has a great opportunity to build on our strong hardware, software, and services franchises with leading market positions, customer relationships, and intellectual property," Whitman said in a statement after the earnings announcement."We need to get back to the business fundamentals in fiscal 2012, including making prudent investments in the business and driving more consistent execution," she added.

JINAN, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough that could lead to more effective treatments for leprosy.A team from Shandong Provincial Institute of Dermatology and Venereology in east China has identified two new risk variants near IL23R and RAB 32 genes that are responsible for the disease, according to a report published online Monday in the scientific journal Nature Genetics.Knowing that the two gene variants influence susceptibility to leprosy could allow doctors to diagnose the disease in sufferers earlier in its outset, as well as to develop new treatments. A genetic database could now be built up to predict those people particularly susceptible to leprosy, said Zhang Furen, the leader of the research team.The study involved more than 10,000 samples being taken from leprosy sufferers and healthy test subjects and analysed.Leprosy is a chronic nerve-killing disease that leads to problems with patients' skin, feet, hands, legs and eyes. More than 200,000 newly-contracted leprosy cases are reported worldwide every year, and China has around one tenth of the world's sufferers. 

BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Renowned China economist Li Yining said Saturday that adjusting the structure of China's economy is a "matter of life and death" while the structure of GDP is more important than its size.The focus of the country's economic structure adjustment now should be transforming the dual structure in the urban and rural economy, which causes the widening income gaps between urban and rural residents, Li said at the China Economic Forum.He also noted that the key to stimulating domestic demand is to raise the workers' wages.With the external demand waned, the Chinese government has attempted to turn to domestic consumers to take up the slack. The country vows to expand domestic demand next year and increase residents' income, especially for disadvantaged groups.However, Li said raising household income is not enough and the government also needs to improve its social security system as well as increase construction of affordable houses and public rental houses.The country plans to begin construction or renovation on at least 7 million housing units for low-income groups next year, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Jiang Weixin said Friday.
