LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rafer Johnson, who won the decathlon at the 1960 Rome Olympics and helped subdue Robert F. Kennedy's assassin in 1968, has died. He was 86. Family friend Michael Roth says Johnson died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. No cause was announced. Johnson was among the world's greatest athletes from 1955 through his Olympic triumph in 1960. The Associated Press reported Johnson won a national decathlon championship in 1956 and a silver medal at the Melbourne Olympics that same year.He lit the torch at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. In June 1968, Johnson was with Kennedy at a hotel in Los Angeles when the senator was shot by Sirhan Sirhan. Johnson, along with former NFL star Rosey Grier and journalist George Plimpton, helped in subduing the shooter. White said in a statement.He noted that it was critical to provide as much advance notice as possible to students and their families, as the CSU system had done in announcing its moves toward primarily virtual instruction as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.The CSU system, which locally includes CSU San Marcos and San Diego State University, announced in mid-March that its campuses would immediately transition in-person operations to a virtual mode, with the chancellor saying then that "the health and well-being of our students and employees is always a foremost priority."In September, White announced that CSU -- which held primarily virtual courses during the fall term -- would continue with predominantly online instruction for the academic term beginning in January."We are approaching planning for the 2021 fall term with the goal of having the majority of our on-campus experiences returning," said CSU Chancellor-select Joseph I. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities identified five additional victims Tuesday as divers searched for the last missing passenger who died in a fatal boat fire off the coast of California.As the families mourned, officials pursued a criminal investigation into the blaze that killed 34 people on Labor Day.Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said the victims, 21 women and 13 men from 16 to 62 years old, appear to have died from smoke inhalation before they were burned.
