Doc Rivers confirmed he will not be back as the NBA Los Angeles Clippers’ head coach following a stunning loss in the Western Conference semifinals earlier this month.Rivers’ Clippers, bolstered by the addition of Kawhi Leonard this season, was set on a collision course with the Clippers’ in-arena rival Los Angeles Lakers for the Western Conference title. EL CAJON, CA (KGTV) - Students at a private school in El Cajon are scheduled to return to class next month.Parents of children at Foothills Christian Middle School got a letter from the school over the weekend outlining their re-opening plan.According to the letter, the school will re-open September 8th.A local mom contacted 10News concerned about the plan. She didn't give her name because she doesn't want retaliation against her daughter. She was surprised at the September return date."If schools could be open, I would send her to school, if the county said we could do that, I would do that, but they're saying we can't go to school and we should be wearing masks," said the mom.According to the letter, there is a five step plan for reopening:*Regular COVID-19 self-check screening questions*Temperature readings prior to entering campus*Hand hygiene*Environmental Cleaning/Sanitization and Refillable Water Bottle Stations*Face masks/coveringsThe letter states that face coverings will not be required, but will be optional on campus. It goes on to list several reasons, including:*There is a lack of evidence that wearing a face mask prevents COVID-19 transmission in children*Children are not typically trained in their use and there is potential for increased risk of infection with improper mask use*Masks can be irritating and may lead to increased touching of face and eyes*It is impractical for a child to wear a mask properly for the duration of the school dayThe mom who contacted us says this will send mixed messages to her child."What we're telling her at home is completely different than, this is completely opposite of everything we're doing. So it's shocking to her, she's like why wouldn't I wear a mask," said the mom.The letter states wearing a mask will be the personal choice of students or faculty, but there may be some occasions where face coverings are required, like field trips."I wouldn't want her to wear a mask at school and be peer pressured not to, or be made fun of for wearing it," said the mom.As far as social distancing, the letter only states, "we will do our best to encourage physical distancing."The letter asks parents and their child to sign it, agreeing to the terms before returning to school.According to CA's governor, counties on the state's COVID-19 monitoring list cannot open schools for in-person instruction. EL CAJON (KGTV) - After 50 years of service, the well-known San Diego Highway Man is retiring. Thomas Weller has been helping thousands of people stuck on the side of the road since 1966. He tells 10News he started helping after a man helped him in a blizzard when he was a teenager living in Illinois.“I was on my way home about one or two in the morning and the blizzard put me off the road into a snow bank," said Weller.Weller says he never forgot that moment and hoped to be that saving grace for many others. Turns out he tells us he’s lost track of how many people he’s helped.“More than ten thousand, it's just I never keep track.” Weller had a stroke back in March and since then decided it’s best given his limited capabilities to retire.“I’ve lost my strength and my agility, not my judgment yet because I’m still driving.” He tells 10News it’s for the best that he retires because of how increasingly dangerous distracted driving has made the roads."It’s just extremely dangerous out there, more so now than it used to be.”While he is giving up one of his favorite passions in life, he isn’t giving up his outlook on life, “the most beautiful compensations of this life you cannot sincerely help another without helping yourself in the bargain.” 1266

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a car slammed into an El Cajon power pole Tuesday afternoon, leaving some residents without power.The crash happened on Madison Avenue and 3rd Street near Madison Avenue Elementary School."It was just kind of like a loud boom," said Julia Jorgensen, who heard the crash.  "The car was smoking at the front for a little bit, so I was really scared that it was going to blow up."According to police in El Cajon, the crash caused extensive damage.  In photos from the scene, the power pole appears to be split in half. SDG&E turned off power approximately 120 residents in the area as a precaution.  Power was restored for most residents by 4:30 p.m.The crash also closed Madison Avenue between 3rd Street and Macon Street, creating traffic as parents picked up their children from one of several schools in the area.Police say the incident is being investigated as a DUI crash. A witness described the driver as stumbling out of the vehicle shortly after the crash."I ran up to him.  I said, 'Who was in the car, like who's in there?' and he was really really out of it.  His eyes were rolling in the back of his head," Jorgensen said. "He was kind of falling everywhere.  He was really really sweaty.At one point, she says he even laid down in the grass, curled up like a ball.Both the driver and passenger were responsive but taken to the hospital with serious injuries. SDGE expects to reopen the street by 10 p.m. 1540

During the second national lockdown in the United Kingdom, the country’s coronavirus cases dropped by about 30 percent, according to a new study.The report, from the Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission (REACT) program in the UK, looked at swab tests on more than 105,000 people between November 13 and 24.Researchers found about .96 percent of the sample tested positive for coronavirus. This compares to about 1.32 percent positive swab tests of a similar sample in a November 2 report.“Three weeks into the second national lockdown in England there has been a ~30% proportionate reduction in prevalence overall,” the REACT report concluded. However, “average absolute prevalence remains high at ~1%. Continued monitoring of the epidemic in the community remains essential until prevalence is reliably suppressed to much lower levels, for example, through widespread vaccination.”An estimated one in 100 people have coronavirus in the UK, according to the study.The UK’s lockdown started on November 5, and data has indicated there was a spike in cases right after, according to the BBC, as symptoms started to show before the effects of the lockdown.The four-week lockdown is set to be lifted Wednesday in the UK, and regions will fall into one of a few tiers based on the rate of infections in that area. The study’s authors said the latest round of test results show a higher prevalence of positive coronavirus tests in school-aged children, however they note schools have stayed open. The UK’s second lockdown kept schools open while the majority of other businesses closed and residents were asked to stay home and not socialize. The country has been paying 80 percent of employee wages during lockdown. They also found a higher prevalence of positive tests from healthcare workers compared to the October data.Researchers estimate the so-called coronavirus reproduction rate, or number of people who will contract the virus from one infected person, has dropped to about .88.
