BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Russia launched a spacecraft with three astronauts on board from the Kazakh Baikonur space center early on Tuesday, Xinhua correspondents reported from the site. The Soyuz TMA-21 spacecraft atop a Soyuz-FG carrier rocket blasted off at 02:18 a.m. Moscow time (2218 GMT April 4), sending to the International Space Station (ISS) Russian cosmonauts Alexander Samokutyaev and Andrei Borisenko and U.S. astronaut Ronald Garn. The Russian Soyuz TMA-21 spacecraft, named after the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, carrying the International Space Station (ISS) crew of U.S. astronaut Ronald Garan, Russian cosmonauts Alexandr Samokutyaev and Andrey Borisenko, blasts off at the Baikonur cosmodrome, April 5, 2011.The Soyuz TMA-21, named after the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, was scheduled to dock with the ISS at 03:18 a.m. Moscow time (2318 GMT April 6) on Thursday.According to the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), the three new crew members are expected to spend 170 days in the ISS. During the period, they will receive two U.S. space shuttles and three Russian Progress cargo ships, conduct a spacewalk and carry out over 40 experiments. The launch is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first flight into space in 1961 carried out by Gagarin.

MOSCOW, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Does life exist on other planets beyond the solar system? Are there any other planets like the Earth in our universe? And what does the universe look like?On questions related to outer space, human beings have never stopped observing and thinking.Yuri Gagarin, who made the first manned space flight on April 12, 1961, and orbited Earth for 108 minutes before safely landing, opened a window named "space" to humankind. The Soviet cosmonaut's journey continues to be an inspiration for the world to "conquer" space -- but now for more peaceful purposes. After the Cold War, cooperation on space exploration and scientific researches has turned to a more pragmatic way. More and more countries are realizing that space programs are closely linked with their people's lives than ever before.GAGARIN'S LEGACY INSPIRES PEACEFUL COOPERATION IN SPACEThe UN General Assembly adopted a resolution earlier this month that declares April 12 the International Day of Human Space Flight. The resolution has been supported by more than 60 countries."Man's space odyssey, the fruitful cooperation of many states in outer space would have been impossible without the very first step, Yuri Gagarin's flight," said Vitaly Churkin, Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations. However, the first human space flight was actually a result of competition between the East and the West at the height of the Cold War when the Berlin Wall was built. That competition gradually evolved, however, into a joint space project that has drawn more than 15 nations -- the International Space Station (ISS). Such a project would almost impossible to imagine before. The Mars-500 project in Moscow, aimed at testing the physical and psychological strains on humans during a 500-day journey to "Mars," is another good example of the international cooperation in scientific research. The experiment included six crew members from four countries, including Russia, China, France and Italy.Compared with the times of Gagarin, who died in a 1968 plane crash, mankind has changed its approach to space exploration, rendering it more pragmatic. That's according to cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, now a deputy head of the Space Flight Center in the Energy Rocket-Space Corporation."Early romanticism and space race have gone. Countries have been replaced by the business-oriented cooperation in the recent decade," Vinogradov told Xinhua.Experts said the scale and costs of space explorations require massive international cooperation."Space programs have been more money-thirsty even than military programs, so the nations seek closer cooperation," Vinogradov said, "and this pays off."STARDUST YIELDS TO PRAGMATISMUnlike 50 years ago, space technologies now are more closely linked to people and more directly affect their daily lives. Nowadays, one just cannot imagine life without satellite TV or GPS.Veteran cosmonaut Georgy Grechko said orbits have become construction sites rather than military facilities and the space industry itself has swiftly evolved into just another sector of the global economy.Echoing Grechko, Vinogradov said space also is a testing ground for many other sectors, including the bio-technological and pharmaceutical industries."What is just as important, outer space has turned into a platform for close, open, and fruitful international cooperation for the benefits of global, universal peace and development," Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said.UN General Assembly President Joseph Deiss has said that the newly established International Day of Human Space Flight should serve as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of peaceful use of space to develop essential technologies and scientific breakthroughs."Space technology is used in matters diverse, such as the fight against climate change, against desertification, and against the loss of biodiversity," Deiss said. "The satellite images provided have given essential data when it comes to avoiding the risks of natural disasters."So far, mankind has never stopped making progress beyond the earth's boundaries and the progress itself has never stopped sparking people's imagination about what is possible through the peaceful use and exploration of outer space. What's more, humankind has never stopped the space dream."The task of the government is to inject into the people an ability to dream," said Igor Zadorin, a member of Russia's National Strategy Council. Here is interesting news: NASA's head Charles Bolden arrived in Russia on the eve of Gagarin's flight anniversary and was expected to discuss Russia-U.S. cooperation on a joint flight to Mars by a nuclear-powered spacecraft. What can we expect in the future?

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The number of dengue fever cases in Rio de Janeiro city this year has already surpassed 10,000, local health authorities said on Friday.According to the city's Health Secretariat, in less than three months, the number of confirmed dengue fever cases in Rio reached 10,158, exceeding the figures registered in the entire years of 2009 (2,723) and 2010 (3,120).In Rio de Janeiro state, the number of confirmed dengue fever cases reached 20,150, and the death toll rose to 18.This week, the first two cases of type-4 dengue fever in Rio de Janeiro state were confirmed in the city of Niteroi. The type-4 dengue fever is not more dangerous than the other types, but as the disease had not been registered in the region before, the local population has no immunity to it.As there are four different types of dengue fever, a person can develop the disease several times. The last epidemic of dengue fever in Rio de Janeiro state occurred in 2008 when 174 people died of the disease and some 250,000 cases of dengue were registered.

HARARE, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- The two-day visit to Zimbabwe by Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi starting Thursday is an endorsement of relations between the Southern African country and China, local figures told Xinhua.Former Zimbabwean ambassador to China Chris Mutsvangwa said in an interview on Tuesday that Yang's visit will also boost economic relations between the two countries."The visit of a foreign minister is a big banner announcement to say that relations between Zimbabwe and China are reaching for a new level," he said."This is a visit which will mark a new diplomatic high watermark in Zimbabwe's international relations because to get the visit of an important and emerging super-power like China with such economic clout is a big vote of confidence on the part of Zimbabweans who have been pummeled by sanctions" imposed by the West.Yang, who will make the visit at the invitation of Zimbabwean Foreign Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, is scheduled to meet President Robert Mugabe and other senior government officials.Mutsvangwa said the Chinese veto at the United Nations in 2008 was "a landmark diplomatic decision where it basically saved Zimbabwe from punitive sanctions instigated by an irate and sulky former colonial power.""So, now this visit will give an opportunity for Zimbabweans tofinally thank China for this act. But more important, cooperation in the economic field is beginning to gather pace because we have crossed the diplomatic and political travails which have been going on in the last 10 years and come out more united because the Chinese veto also enabled Zimbabweans to find accommodation among themselves and led to the GNU and GPA," Mutsvangwa said.China, together with Russia, vetoed the British initiative for full-scale UN sanctions against Zimbabwe, saying the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU) should be given a chance to resolve the country's political problems.A SADC-driven initiative led to a Government of National Unity (GNU) following the signing of the Global Political Agreement (GPA) between Mugabe and then rivals Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara."So there is more national unity now among Zimbabweans. It is an opportune moment for us to tighten our relations with China so that we can explore cooperation in the more rewarding material areas of agriculture, mining, tourism and industrialization."There is clearly a lot of scope for cooperation between Zimbabwe and China so that Zimbabwe can quicken its modernization pace taking advantage of the stellar achievements of the Chinese in the above areas," Mutsvangwa said.He cited areas such as telecommunications, international logistics and the internet as being led by the Chinese.China Tobacco has also been on the fore-front reviving tobacco farming in Zimbabwe for the past five years.Mutsvangwa said shortages in the global cotton sector could spur better trade relations between the two countries and lead to more opportunities for Zimbabwean farmers.

Li conveyed Spring Festival greetings while meeting with members of China's 27th Chinese Antarctic expedition team, the 22nd oceanic expedition, and scientists working in the country's Antarctic and Arctic stations via video and telephone on Sunday."We are confident and capable of constantly improving our working conditions to conduct polar and oceanic exploration, and winning the initiative in this sector's future development," Li said.Li said the country would work to promote its marine economy and safeguard marine ecosystems, as well, and make full use of the achievements made in explorations to make reasonable development and utilization of ocean resources.China would also ensure the security of ocean passages, and safeguard its marine rights and interests, the vice premier said.Li also conveyed New Years greetings to the scientists for conducting research away from their homeland and families, and applauded their contribution to the country's progress in polar and oceanic research areas.
