CARLSBAD (KGTV) -  A new airline will begin flying from Carlsbad's McClellan Airport, trying to give North County travelers an alternative to Lindbergh Field.California Pacific Airlines will take off for the first time on Friday, with a flight to San Jose. They also have flights planned for Reno, Sacramento, Las Vegas, and Phoenix/Mesa by the end of November. The airline already offers flights from Denver to several cities in South Dakota."We’ll be flying at least 15 flights a day in the next two months," says CEO Ted Vallas. "We're getting a great reception for it."Vallas says his airline will offer competitive rates, but travelers will save money in the long run because they won't have to first drive up to an hour to Lindbergh Field or pay to park.The airline hit a snag on its first morning, however, having to postpone its inaugural flight Thursday. A mechanical problem delayed the airplane in Denver.Vallas says that's not a sign of things to come, noting that his airline will have a fleet of 15 to 25 planes stationed at all cities it serves.McClellan Airport has had problems keeping commercial travel. Last spring, CalJet had to shut down after trying to launch service to and from Las Vegas.Passengers at the airport this week say they're excited about the ability to fly out of Carlsbad."It's just a 10 minute drive for me," says Carlsbad resident Walt Stringer. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — What looks like an asteroid may just be an old rocket from a failed moon-landing mission more than 50 years ago. The newly spotted object is expected to get nabbed by Earth's gravity and become a mini moon next month. NASA's leading asteroid expert thinks it is the upper rocket stage from a 1966 mission. Observations as the object draws closer should help nail its identity. He speculates the object is the Centaur stage from NASA's Surveyor 2 mission, dating back to 1966. CARSON (CNS) - San Diego State is scheduled to begin in its coronavirus-delayed football season tonight against UNLV at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, its home for this season and next as SDCCU Stadium is demolished and Aztec Stadium is built.San Diego State initially planned to make 2020 its final season at SDCCU Stadium, where it had played since 1967, but being able to expedite its demolition and construction of Aztec Stadium and the stadium's condition when the university took ownership of it from the city prompted a change of plans, according to athletic director John David Wicker.``The building was not in very good condition when we took it over,'' Wicker said at a Sept. 15 news conference announcing the decision. ``The amount of effort and dollars to get it up to speed to have people able to come in was somewhat challenging.''The university considered a site in San Diego to play its games until the planned opening of Aztec Stadium in 2022, ``but when you think about a Division 1 football experience and all of the different things that go along with that there wasn't a venue in town that was going to be consistently available for us to play in,'' Wicker said.``We just didn't think there were any venues in San Diego that could satisfy what we wanted to present for our student-athletes and also our fans,'' Wicker said.``As you think about some of the things around the game, our television partners and having the ability to come in and set up and do the television experience we want to put out led us to where we are today.''Fans will not be allowed to attend Saturday's game because of state health orders related to the coronavirus pandemic. (KGTV) - Border Patrol agents arrested a previously deported gang member and came under gunfire in two separate incidents this week.Agents at Calexico Station's processing center said a 25-year-old Mexican citizen who had been arrested in downtown Calexico is a member of the "Sure?os" criminal organization, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said.RELATED: CA Attorney General Xavier Becerra announces border wall lawsuit in San DiegoAfter being interviewed, the man admitted to being a member of the gang, CBP said.
