The Slater fire roared through Happy Camp, California on Sept. 8, and more than a month later, families still can’t get back into their neighborhoods.U.S. Forest Service Officer Jason Rasmussen was working to evacuate families in his community, as his own home was engulfed in flames.He said the fire was like nothing he’s seen in his quiet home town before. “Sounded like some sort of freight train. It was just total chaos. People were scared,” recalled Rasmussen.Winds fueled the flames, leveling 100,000 acres within hours. Two people were killed and nearly 200 homes were lost.“I knew my home was probably going to burn,” said Rasmussen. “I could only hope that it would survive.”Daybreak cemented gut-wrenching worry into reality. This fire left nothing behind for this family and so many others.“It’s heartbreaking seeing my house and my friend’s houses burned to the ground,” said Rasmussen's son, Chaance, who is a firefighter. “The only thing that’s left is memories.”Memories of a home, of a family legacy, built in this town for generations—now reduced to dust.“It’s emotional. I don’t even like to go back there,” said Jason Rasmussen of returning to what was once his home. “The stuff that was special to me was not valuable even. It was stuff that my grandfather had given me. Things that were sentimental for that reason, because it was connected to my family history."This loss is made even harder for the Rasmussens, because they never thought they’d be the ones needing help.“While you’re talking to people you’re evacuating, you’re going through the same thing,” said Jason Rasmussen. “When I knew I was actually homeless, that was the worst feeling.”After a month of moving from place to place, having nowhere to really call home, a surprise came that left these first responders speechless.Volunteers from EmergencyRV.org drove this donated RV from Oregon to Northern California. A woman donated her RV to the organization, and EmergencyRV.org matches up families in need. First responders go to the top of the list.Between being on the frontlines through the pandemic and this natural disaster, this group wanted to give these men a break.“It doesn’t make sense that a firefighter loses his home and is sleeping in a tent or has nowhere to go, sleeping in the station,” said EmergencyRV.org founder Woody Faircloth. “We want to give them a place to call home until they get back on their feet.”“I wasn’t expecting something like this,” said Chaance Rasmussen of the donated RV. “I thought, maybe something I could tow, but then I remembered I didn’t have a truck anymore, so it’s nice to have this.”The RV is giving the young firefighter much more than a place to sleep.“It kind of restores my faith in humanity,” said Chaance Rasmussen. “You see all the bad stuff on the media, people are rioting and all that stuff is happening, and knowing that people are out there doing stuff like this, it’s real heartwarming.”To the volunteers, it’s a thank you for the danger these frontline workers face head-on every day.“These firefighters and frontline heroes…they are heroes,” said Faircloth. “They’re out there every day doing this job, and they don’t make a lot of money, but they’re risking their lives for the rest of us.”A risk this father and son are proud to take on, even as they take on the much tougher challenge of restoring this land into a place they can call home. 3405

But the district’s recently hired superintendent caused a stir during a public Zoom meeting announcing how the they will decide which students get priority seating when in-person learning resumes.“We have to make sure that students, who have been oppressed, that we don’t continue to oppress them, and we give them opportunity,” said school superintendent Dr. Devon Horton of the Evanston/Skokie school district in late July.“We will be targeting our dependent learners – those are students who are marginalized first,” he said.Low-income students, special needs and those dealing with homelessness are just some who will be first in line. There have been angry letters, petitions and even death threats to the superintendent and school board.“Understanding that other folks are experiencing more vulnerability and more harm than my family is experiencing,” says Anya Tanyavutti, a parent of two and the Evanston district’s school board president. “I'm happy to see those resources go to people who need it more.”For the last four years, the Evanston school district has been working on implementing anti-racism resolutions and curricula to address inequity.“Taking an anti-racist stance requires some sort of sacrifice,” says Dr. Onnie Rogers a professor at Northwestern University’s school of Education and Social Policy. “I think that's really the part of racial equity that our country is still getting used to on the ground.”Here in Evanston, the achievement gap does fall along racial lines where Black and Latino students are one-third as likely as white students to meet college readiness benchmarks.The district acknowledges that its plan to allow some students to return before others falls mostly along racial lines. But it is need, they say, not race, that will be the determining factor.“If we simply said we're gonna just reopen for whoever wants to come, then the people who are most well-resourced and most well-connected would likely be able to get those seats prior to people who are challenged with homelessness or challenged with getting food on the table,” says Tanyavutti.And there has been opposition. Arlington, Virginia, based ‘Students for Fair Admissions’- a non-profit advocacy group that has mounted legal challenges to affirmative action, has called the district’s plan unconstitutional.“If that student has unique special needs then that's fine to take those into consideration,” says Edward Blum, president of Students for Fair Admissions. “What is not fine to take into consideration is the skin color or ethnic heritage of students.”“It has been legally reviewed, and I am confident that we are operating within the bounds of our Constitution,” says Tanyavutti.In-person learning is tentatively scheduled to resume in mid-November. The Trump campaign has filed a second lawsuit to stop ballot counting the day after the election. This time in Pennsylvania.In a release sent to supporters, the president’s campaign says they are taking several legal actions concerning Pennsylvania ballots. The first is they are “moving to intervene in the existing Supreme Court litigation over the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s unlawful extension of the mail-in ballot receipt deadline.”Trump’s campaign is also filing suit to stop ballot counting because they claim election officials are counting and processing ballots out of sight of Republican poll observers.“In Philadelphia and elsewhere, Democrat officials forced our observers to stay 25 feet or more from the counting process, leaving no meaningful way whatsoever for our observers to do their jobs,” the statement from Justin Clark, Trump’s deputy campaign manager, reads.With about 84 percent of the ballots counted, Trump leads Biden by almost 300,000 votes. This is similar language used by the Trump campaign when they said they filed in Michigan Wednesday morning. The Trump campaign says it is calling for a temporary halt in the counting in Michigan until it is given “meaningful access” in numerous locations and allowed to review ballots that already have been opened and processed. The Trump Administration wants to change the definition of a showerhead to let more water flow, addressing a pet peeve of the president who complains he isn’t getting wet enough.Publicly talking about the need to keep his hair “perfect,” President Donald Trump has made increasing water flow and dialing back long held appliance conservation standards — from light bulbs to toilets to dishwashers — a personal issue.But consumer and conservation groups said the Department of Energy’s proposed loosening of a 28-year-old energy law that includes appliance standards is silly, unnecessary and wasteful, especially as the West bakes through a historic two-decade-long megadrought.Since 1992, federal law has dictated that new showerheads shouldn’t pour more than 2.5 gallons of water per minute (9.5 liters). As newer shower fixtures came out with multiple nozzles, the Obama administration defined the showerhead restrictions to apply to what comes out in total. So if there are four nozzles, no more than 2.5 gallons total should come out between all four.The new proposal Wednesday would allow each nozzle to spray as much as 2.5 gallons, not just the overall showerhead.With four or five or more nozzles, “you could have 10, 15 gallons per minute powering out of the showerhead, literally probably washing you out of the bathroom,” said Andrew deLaski, executive director of the energy conservation group Appliance Standards Awareness Project.On the White House South Lawn in July, Trump made the issue personal:“So showerheads — you take a shower, the water doesn’t come out.
