BALTIMORE — The Frederick County State's Attorney's Office in Maryland indicted a man who knowingly transmitted HIV to several women he met on dating sites.According to officials, the Frederick County Police Department started an investigation in 2017 on 34-year-old Rudolph Jericho Smith after different women told authorities that they believed Smith had infected them with HIV.During the department's investigation, officials were able to conduct witness interviews which informed them that Smith knew of his HIV-positive status since 2014. A search warrant for Smith's blood was executed and a detective confirmed his positive status. The department was later notified that Smith continued to meet women on dating sites and had unprotected sex with them without telling them about his status.Smith has been charged with first degree assault, reckless endangerment and knowing transfer of HIV.The Frederick Police Department is asking anyone who may have had a sexual relationship with Smith around or after July 2017 to leave contact information on the 1069

At a White House briefing on Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence said that the government will have 1.5 million coronavirus tests ready to distribute this week after bipartisan criticism was levied on the government's ability to distribute tests. Pence added that tests are available in all 50 states, giving doctors the ability to better determine whether patients have been sickened with coronavirus. These tests will go to hospitals and labs at state universities. The eventual goal is to make the tests accessible more broadly. "Our objective is to make tests available broadly to the American public," Pence said. "We want to make sure the American people can go to their doctor, can go to the local MedCheck or CVS, and obtain access to coronavirus (tests)."On Tuesday, members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee expressed frustration with the distribution of tests. "I'm sure across the nation are really scared," Sen. Patty Murray said at Tuesday's hearing. "I'm hearing from people who are sick who want to get tested, are not being told where to go. I'm hearing that even when people do get tested and it's very few so far, the results are taking way longer to get back to them. "The administration has had months to prepare for this and it is unacceptable that people in my state and nationwide can't even get an answer as to whether or not they are infected."The announcement comes as the death toll nationwide is up to 11 from coronavirus. It also comes as United Airlines announced that it is cutting back the number of domestic and international flights. Administration officials said that elderly and those with pre-existing conditions should reconsider elective travel. Before 7-year-old Faizan Zaki takes the stage at this year’s national spelling bee competition, he will take the stage to sing with his first-grade class in Allen, Texas. Zaki is the youngest participant in the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee. When asked how he felt about being the youngest speller, Zaki replies, “I just feel normal.” However, Zaki isn’t like most 7-year-olds. For one, he loves astronomy. “And my favorite thing about astronomy is like hypothetical objects like carbon stars and quasi stars,” Zaki says. He also loves science.“This is a periodic table, and it has 118 elements,” he explains.Not only does he know most of the elements by memory, but he knows how to spell them all, too.As for his favorite things to spell? Zaki says he loves long words. But even with his superior spelling skills, his parents are still shocked by his success. As a first-grader, he beat out sixth-graders to win his schools spelling bee. He eventually earned a spot on the national stage.“He loves it. I mean he loves the learning and words, and so that has been like, you know, it's just been very easy,” says his mother, Arshia Quadri.Zaki’s parents said they started studying words with him for fun.And even through they’re practicing a little bit more now, it’s still about having fun.“We just want him to be happy and, you know, experience that,” Quadri says. “You know the whole experience of going to the bee.”“And if he can spell a few words there and get to a few rounds, then good for him, that would be amazing,” says his father Zaki Anwar.To those with a dream, Zaki says to try hard and keep trying.“If you try, then you can probably win next time,” he says. 1689
