BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- China and Nepal celebrated the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties at a reception in Beijing Monday evening.More than 300 guests, including Chinese government officials and foreign diplomats in China, attended the reception, which was co-hosted by the China-Nepal Friendship Association, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), and Nepalese embassy in China.Chen Haosu, president of the CPAFFC, said in a speech that the years since China and Nepal forged diplomatic ties had witnessed continuous development of their traditional friendship and friendly cooperation as well as frequent high-level exchanges.Political, economic, trade and cultural relations were closer than ever, Chen said.Guests attend a reception co-hosted by the China-Nepal Friendship Association, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), and Nepalese embassy in China in Beijing, Aug. 2, 2010. BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Profits at Chinese industrial enterprises in 24 regions climbed 71.8 percent year on year to 1.61 trillion yuan (237.5 billion U.S. dollars) in the first six months, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Wednesday.The growth rate was 11.2 percentage points lower than that in the first five months, the NBS said in a statement.Combined revenues for the enterprises totaled 25.9 trillion yuan in the first half of the year, up 36.5 percent from a year earlier - a growth rate 2.4 percentage points lower than in the January-to-May period.Most of the 39 major industries posted year-on-year profit growth.The 24 regions comprise all of the Chinese mainland provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions except the Inner Mongolia and Tibet autonomous regions; Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan and Yunnan provinces; and Chongqing.China's industrial value-added output expanded 17.6 percent year on year in the first half of the year. But month-on-month growth began to slow in March, with June's growth at 13.7 percent year on year.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A new round of rains started to pound the mudslide-flattened Chinese town of Zhouqu Monday night, which has increased the possibilities of new mudslides occurring.The weather bureau in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Gansu Province, which administers Zhouqu County, issued a rainstorm warning Monday night, warning about the likelihood of new geological disasters.Rains started pounding Zhouqu at around 10 p.m., which, according to Gansu's provincial weather bureau, could last for five days and precipitation in some regions may reach 60 to 80 mm.The massive landslide on August 8 killed 1,254 people as of 4 p.m.Monday, with 490 still missing.Residents are ferried by a boat in landslide-hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Gansu Province, Aug. 16, 2010. Large-scaled ponding area still remained in the county although the flood has subsidised. Meanwhile, rescue headquarters in Zhouqu has started implementing a disaster prevention contingency plan, which was drawn up on August 11.The plan asks rescue teams and residents alike to move out of mudslide-prone areas if heavy rainfalls pelt the region.According to the plan, tents built in these areas should be removed immediately. Also, cars are not allowed to park in these areas.

XIAMEN, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland and Taiwan have come closer to signing a comprehensive economic pact as "substantial progress" has been made in negotiations, the mainland's chief Taiwan affairs official said on Sunday.Speaking at a centerpiece conference of the week-long Straits Forum held in the southeastern city of Xiamen, Director of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, Wang Yi, said the progress in talks on the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) is a result of joint endeavors and shall be honored by both sides.The two sides discussed the main contents of the pact and items of the goods and services to be included in the "early harvest program" at the third round of expert-level talks in Beijing last week.The Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) represented both sides during the negotiations. Two previous talks were held in Beijing and Taipei earlier this year.The ECFA is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer, the pact's initiators said. Its "early harvest program" will cover certain industries to first benefit from tariff reductions.
