Senate Republicans tallied enough votes Friday morning to block a largely Democratic-backed amendment that would require President Donald Trump to get congressional approval before striking Iran militarily.During an unusual Friday vote that commenced at 5 a.m. to meet various scheduling demands of the senators, Republicans hit the 41-vote mark, which means the Iran measure can't get the 60 votes it would need to advance.Sen. Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, cast the 41st vote. The vote may not be finalized for several hours because it is being held open for senators, including those Democrats who participated in the Democratic presidential debate Thursday night in Miami, to come to the chamber to vote.Democrats knew they couldn't win on this amendment but pressed to have the vote to get senators on the record about the issue.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. SANTA FE, N.M. – George R.R. Martin, the author of the books that inspired the TV show “Game of Thrones,” says he’s practicing social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. Martin provided the update to his fans in a blog post Tuesday, saying that he’s spending the time at his Santa Fe home writing the next book in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series. “Truth be told, I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day,” he wrote. “Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms… but maybe not as grim as they may become here.” As a 71-year-old man, Martin is in high risk age group for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus. However, he says he’s taking the necessary precautions. “For those of you who may be concerned for me personally… yes, I am aware that I am very much in the most vulnerable population, given my age and physical condition,” he wrote. “But I feel fine at the moment, and we are taking all sensible precautions. I am off by myself in a remote isolated location, attended by one of my staff, and I’m not going into town or seeing anyone.”Martin, one of the most celebrated fantasy writers, went on to say that he can’t help feeling as if we are living in a science fiction novel.“But not, alas, the sort of science fiction novel that I dreamed of living in when I was a kid, the one with the cities on the Moon, colonies on Mars, household robots programmed with the Three Laws, and flying cars,” wrote Martin, :I never liked the pandemic stories half so well…”The writer also provided updates on the status of his businesses, including his bookstore, art installation and theater, as well as his nonprofit. 1674

TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida family was attacked outside their home by a swarm of yellow jackets over the weekend.Hundreds of them covered the husband, wife and their 8-year-old son.“We just ran, and ran and ran until they finally decided to leave us alone," Luis Figueroa said. The swarm of yellow jackets, disturbed by a falling palm frond, attacked Figueroa and his family on the way to church."When the fire captain came,” Figueroa said, “he came back to me and he said, ‘you guys are lucky to be alive. You got over 10,000 (wasps) on top of your car.’ ”Conner Keller, an exterminator for Insect IQ, said he had a similar experience when he went out to the scene.“There were hundreds on my truck two days later when I pulled up. Once they’re disturbed and that nest has opened up, it’s on," Keller said. When yellow jacket nests open, Keller and Insect IQ respond all year round. They were the ones called since the nest was originally on Hillsborough County property."A yellow jacket tornado ensued and there was just a huge tornado of yellow jackets. It’s pretty intense,” Keller said.Keller neutralized the threat and told others to remember this if they are attacked: get inside and jumping into water will not get them to go away."It is a very scary situation, that’s all I can say," Figueroa said. "Something I don’t want to go through again."This story was originally published by Darren Botelho on 1415

Sports can change a community, and in Dayton, Ohio, a minor league baseball team is having a major impact. The Dayton Dragons hold the record for most consecutive sellouts by a professional sports team, breaking the previous record of 815 held by the Portland Trailblazers of the NBA. The Dragons came to Dayton 20 seasons ago, and super fan Michael Belcher has been at almost every game since day one. “Which was April 27, 2000, when we had our opening day,” Belcher says, while attending the 1,366th consecutive sellout game for the Dragons. “This is my vacation for lack of a better term,” Belcher says. “I come down here a watch the boys play.” It seems the boys in green appreciate the support. “It’s awesome,” says Dayton Dragons catcher Jay Schuyler. “Everyone says it’s the closest thing to playing in the big leagues before you get to the big leagues.” Schuyler says this passionate fan base in the crowd impacts the team’s play on the field.“You can feel it,” he says. “In big situations it always seems the pitcher can get an extra mile or hour or two, or you can run a little faster down the line.” Take a look down the line, over the right field wall and you’ll see the Dragons provide much more than entertainment. They’re creating economic development.“We had a study done and we have about a million annual impact on the city of Dayton,” says Eric Deutsch, executive vice president of the Dayton Dragons. Deutsch says the Dragons success came as somewhat a surprise, and it's a surprise that brings in half a million people a year to downtown Dayton every season. “It’s just been this crazy thing that no one could have dreamed up,” he says. “We’re happy to keep on keeping on with the numbers.” 1728
