An operation is underway to evacuate thousands of tourists after a deadly earthquake that rocked some of Indonesia's most idyllic islands late Sunday night.At least 98 people, all Indonesian nationals, were killed when the 6.9 magnitude quake struck the popular tourist island of Lombok, Indonesian authorities said Monday. More than 200 were also injured.The majority of those killed in the quake were hit by falling debris from collapsing buildings, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the head of Indonesia's disaster management department.In total, an estimated 20,000 people have been displaced by the massive earthquake, Nugroho said.Dramatic video tweeted by authorities showed hundreds of people, many believed to be foreign vacationers, crammed onto a beach on the island of Gili Trawangan as evacuation measures got underway.Emergency personnel were racing to evacuate thousands of tourists from the three small Gili Islands as night began to fall. The islands, famous for their white sandy beaches and clear waters, are located near the epicenter of the quake on Lombok.Earlier rescue efforts were hampered by shallow waters, but rising sea waters mean nine ships are now expected to dock on the islands.So far, up to 2,700 tourists have been moved from the Gili Islands, according to Nugroho. He added that Lombok's airport was now open around the clock and had significantly increased its flight schedule.The epicenter of the quake was in northern Lombok, a more residential, less developed part of the island. The majority of Lombok's tourist resorts are on the island's southern coast.British tourist Mike Bennett, stranded on the island of Gili Meno along with around 100 other people, told CNN he faced an anxious night ahead."It's getting dark now," he said. As governors around the country consider new or stricter restrictions to control the latest surge in coronavirus cases, a recently published study identifies restaurants, cafes and gyms as some of the places having the highest risk of coronavirus spread outside the home.The study, published this week in the journal Nature, looked at data from millions of Americans, tracked by their phones as they went about daily life during the first wave of the pandemic this spring.They used the data and an epidemiological model to run simulations on viral spread at points of interest outside the home. Their findings in the simulations closely matched actual coronavirus caseloads, according to the Washington Post.“We found large variation in predicted reopening risks: on average across metro areas, full-service restaurants, gyms, hotels, cafes, religious organizations, and limited-service restaurants produced the largest predicted increases in infections when reopened,” the study states.Researchers say these locations pose more risk because the mobility data, data showing how mobile people are at these places, shows Americans tend to spend longer amounts of time and at a higher density of people.Their models add support to pandemic measures around the country that limit capacity at some of these points of interest, including capping indoor gatherings to a certain percentage or number of people.“Reducing maximum occupancy substantially reduced risk without sharply reducing overall mobility: capping at 20% maximum occupancy in the Chicago metro area cut down predicted new infections by more than 80% but only lost 42% of overall visits, and we observed similar trends across other metro areas,” researchers stated.The study also looked at disparities in lower income neighborhoods, where more of the population has to leave their home for essential jobs, grocery delivery may not be available or is financially not possible, and businesses tend to be smaller and potentially more crowded.“Because disadvantaged groups suffer a larger burden of infection, it is critical to not just consider the overall impact of reopening plans but also their disparate impact on disadvantaged groups specifically,” the study states.The researchers hope the information is helpful to policymakers and city leaders as they consider reopening restrictions. 2356

An Omaha, Nebraska massage therapist accused of sexual assault now faces more charges.Omaha Police have now charged 62-year-old Melvin Buffington with five additional charges of Third Degree Sexual Assault.  OPD says a woman reported that Buffington sexually assaulted her during a scheduled massage appointment at Oasis Massage and Spa on January 12.  As they investigated that allegation, a second victim reported she had been sexually assaulted during her massage appointment on February 15. Prosecutors say Buffington moved the woman's underwear and penetrated her during a deep tissue massage Police took Buffington into custody on Feb. 18. On Feb. 20, Buffington had his bond set at ,000.  Omaha Police say the investigation continues and Oasis has cooperated fully.  829

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Sarah Palin's husband, commonly referred to as "Alaska's first dude" when she was governor, appears to be seeking a divorce from his wife of 31 years.Paperwork believed to be from Todd Palin cited "incompatibility of temperament" in seeking to end his marriage to the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee.The filing Friday in Anchorage Superior Court only identified the couple by initials. The initials, birthdates and wedding date match the Palins, as does the initials given for their only young child living at home.The documents list the minor as T.P.V.P., born April 18, 2008, the same date Sarah Palin gave birth to Trig Paxon Van Palin, the youngest of the couple's five children.The Palins married in 1988. After Sarah Palin became governor in 2006, Todd Palin continued to fish commercially and work an oil field job on the North Slope. Their lives were ever changed after Republican presidential candidate John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate.During her speech to the Republican National Convention, Palin talked about her long relationship with her husband."We met in high school, and two decades and five children later, he's still my guy," she said at the time.In the divorce filing believed to be from Todd Palin, he seeks joint custody of the child.
