SARASOTA, Fla. — The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested 21 people during an Operation Intercept V, an initiative to protect Sarasota County children from online predators. The suspects, ranging in age from 22 to 58, responded to internet-based ads, online apps or social media sites and engaged in sexually explicit written and verbal conversations, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.One of the suspects promised to stay with a 14-year-old child if he impregnated her while another agreed to have sex with who he believed was a 12-year-old. More than four of the men brought condoms and some offered to bring drugs. Several suspects sent explicit photos. They all traveled with the intent to have sex with a male or female child, according to deputies. “You would think the frequency of Internet predator operations here in Sarasota County and surrounding jurisdictions would reduce the number of criminals prowling online for the sole purpose of sexually exploiting children,” Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight said. “Unfortunately, for some reason, they still think it’s OK to disrupt our community and the children within it. Let this be a reminder for parents to stay cognizant of what their children are doing in this new age of technology. Remember to be a parent. (AP) — Apple is introducing a cheaper version of its smartwatch, its latest attempt to broaden the appeal of its trend-setting products while more consumers are forced to scrimp during ongoing fallout from the pandemic. The scaled-down Apple Watch follows a budget iPhone that came out five months ago as the pandemic caused unemployment rates to soar. Apple took the wraps off the new discount watch in addition to a new high-end model, a next-generation iPad and a new subscription service during a virtual event held Tuesday. San Francisco police say they will stop releasing the mug shots of people who have been arrested unless they pose a threat to the public. Police Chief Bill Scott says the new policy starting Wednesday is aimed at stopping the spread of negative stereotypes of minorities. Jack Glaser, a public policy professor at the University of California Berkeley who researches racial stereotyping, says data shows Black people who are arrested are more likely to have their cases dismissed by prosecutors. But the mug shots live on. That contributes to Americans making an unfair association between people of color and crime. 624

Sears is getting serious about selling Kenmore.The struggling retailer announced Monday that it had formed a "special committee" to explore the sale of its in-house appliance brand.The move comes less than a month after Sears CEO Eddie Lampert wrote a letter to the board urging it to sell the brand. He offered to buy it himself if necessary, along with other assets.There is a good chance that Lampert will be the one buying Kenmore.Through his hedge fund, ESL Investments, Lampert owns a majority of shares in Sears Holding, the company that owns the Sears and Kmart chains.Sears has been exploring a possible sale of Kenmore and other assets for a number of years but never found a buyer. But this week it escalated its efforts by forming the "special committee," retaining counsel and bringing on an investment bank.The announcement was enough to briefly lift Sears shares 19% in early trading Monday, before they retreated to more modest gains of about 6%.Shares are still near historic lows. The retailer has admitted "substantial doubts" exist that it will be able to remain in business.Lampert has insisted that the company is on a path to return to profitability. But it is in need of cash and has been closing stores, cutting costs and getting creditors to agree to a longer repayment schedule on its debt. Newsom hosted a round table discussion at El Rincon Restaurant in San Ysidro around 10 am."I don't have any hope... I don't have any faith in the people who are making the decisions," Luz Camacho Espinoza said. The entire table agreeing they're tired of the militarization at the border and spreading fear."Walking home from school I've now seen tanks, trucks, and carriers pass through my childhood streets," SDSU student Hector Castro said.One woman who grew up in San Ysidro chimed in, "there is no crisis here." Castro said the focus needs to shift to real crises like affordable housing and environmental health. "You know there's all this traffic, all these cars all these trucks all this gas, all this air pollution that's being placed on our town," he said.The leaders said it was important to educate the public that San Ysidro is a vibrant town, full of families, not a dangerous area full of criminals. He added the town is intertwined in many ways with Tijuana, saying not only are there families on both sides, and the economies rely upon the border remaining open.Owner of the family business El Rincon Restaurant, Edgar Alaniz, called upon Newsom for action, "I want to make it clear that if he wants to understand the community more he needs to visit the community more."Though the meeting was hosted in San Ysidro, a news release made no mention of whether or not Newsom would visit the border.
