SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say possible human remains were discovered in a Fiesta Island fire pit early Thursday.Just after 10:30 a.m., a man on the east side of the island flagged down San Diego Lifeguards after making the grim discovery. Officers responded and sent an image to a forensic anthropologist, who confirmed the remains were possibly human.ABC 10News spoke to the man who made the discovery. Dan Conklin says he was hoping to spend the day on Fiesta Island and was planning to grill some hot dogs when he parked his van near the fire pit. Conklin says he noticed a lot of trash surrounding the pit and some extra wood, so he decided he would stay. When he started cleaning up, he says, he noticed what looked like human remains. "I kept thinking it was a joke, something to do with Halloween, it had to be a mannequin or a dummy or something that you put on your porch or something," said Conklin. Conklin says he flagged down a lifeguard in the bay who then called police. Conklin says when he arrived at the pit, it was still smoldering. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Statewide DUI arrests and fatalities saw a significant increase over Christmas weekend. A total of 47 people died in DUI-related crashes in 2018 compared to 27 deaths over the same time period in 2017. DUI arrests also saw a significant rise. More than 1,100 people were arrested for DUI in 2018 compared to 917 in 2017. In San Diego County, three people died due to DUI-related crashes, tying with 2017. DUI arrests rose slightly from 56 to 57 in 2018. The reporting period for the arrests and deaths was Friday, December 21 through Tuesday, December 25. 584

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego revealed Tuesday that its newest roller coaster will open this spring. "Emperor", named after the biggest species of penguin, which can be seen at the park's popular "Penguin Encounter" attraction."It will be the tallest, fastest, longest, and the only floorless dive coaster in the state of California and the entire west coast of North America," said Senior Vice President of Attractions Mike Denninger.RELATED: SeaWorld's new dive coaster will be named 'Emperor'The ride reaches 153 feet at its tallest point, tops 60 miles per hour, and includes multiple inversions. The centerpiece of the ride, however, is the 90-degree, straight down drop. Denninger says the train will freeze for a few seconds just after going over the edge, ratcheting up the anticipation, while also offering unparalleled views of SeaWorld and Mission Bay. "I think it will be wonderful. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Qualcomm won a million decision Friday against Apple in a patent infringement case involving iPhones. A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California found the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and X infringed Qualcomm’s patents. One of the patents enables "flashless booting”, eliminating the need for separate flash memory. It also allows a smartphone to connect to the internet quickly after being powered on, according to Qualcomm officials. The other two patents allow smartphone apps to access internet data quickly, and enable high performance and graphics while increasing battery life, Qualcomm said in a news release. Qualcomm was awarded million in damages from July 6, 2017, the date the lawsuit was filed, through the end of the trial. "Today's unanimous jury verdict is the latest victory in our worldwide patent litigation directed at holding Apple accountable for using our valuable technologies without paying for them," said Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel for Qualcomm. "The technologies invented by Qualcomm and others are what made it possible for Apple to enter the market and become so successful so quickly. The three patents found to be infringed in this case represent just a small fraction of Qualcomm's valuable portfolio of tens of thousands of patents.
