Even shorter breaks can erase some lessons.A special program at San Diego Unified is helping keep kids stay sharp and excited about learning all year round, even during breaks. It's about making learning a fun, family affair.In a classroom at Rosa Parks Elementary School in City Heights, 7-year-old students Melody and Isabella are getting some one-on-one attention with their lessons. The teachers in this case are Melody's grandmother and Isabella's mom."Everyday they have to read. Everyday they have homework to do," said Anna Gonzalez. She and Maria Theresa Jaume are among a growing number of parents and guardians getting more involved with their kid's education through the "Family Engagement Department" at San Diego Unified."So, I now know how to ask her questions," says Gonzalez, "How to engage her with the reading and things like that.""It solidifies the bond right," says Family Engagement Program manager Pamela King, "It shows kids that education is important." King says the program was established in 2016, inviting families to become partners in their kid's education with tips on how to do it."You're reading a fiction book. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of the man killed on India Street on this month has identified him as David Hill. The 38-year-old was a pathology resident at Balboa Naval Hospital. In the Navy since 2004, Hill had reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was an avid traveler, having visited dozens of countries. His mother, Carol Hill, said he had a goal of running a marathon on every continent. Hill had already checked off the hardest, Antarctica, though he had to get creative. “He did the 26 miles on the ship’s treadmill to fill that square!” said Hill's mother. RELATED: Pedestrian hit, killed near I-5 offrampA member of the San Diego Swim Masters team, he also swam in the Antarctic waters and was training for an island-to-island swim in the Galapagos next year. “He was a fanatic about being in shape,” said his brother, Matt. “Every morning he’d get up at 4 am and swim miles or he’d get up and run.” That’s what they believe he was doing the morning of Dec. 2. He had made it a few blocks from his apartment when he was struck by the driver of a minivan on India Street near Olive and Palm. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thanksgiving with the Salvation Army will be different in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic."We knew that we were going to do something," says Captain Sean Kelsley, who oversees the Salvation Army East County Operations. "The question was, what would it look like?"For the past 30 years, the Salvation Army held large, family-style gatherings to feed people experiencing homelessness, the disabled, and families in need at Golden Hall for Thanksgiving. They plan for 1,800 people, plus volunteers.But a gathering of 2,000+ people is strictly forbidden under California and San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines.In its place, the Salvation Army will offer "grab-and-go" style meals at four locations around the county."We're just glad to be able to be here," says Captain Kelsey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The ACLU is threatening to sue ICE over a policy that forbids detention center volunteers from speaking with the press.Souls Offering Loving and Compassionate Ears, also known as SOLACE, is not allowed to help at the Otay Mesa Detention Center until they sign a form promising not to speak with the media.In August, ICE discovered SOLACE wasn’t in compliance with their protocol before asking the group to resubmit the paperwork for their volunteers.ICE says the code of ethics is in place for the safety of the detainees. “These are often folks who don't have any family or friends in the United States so even if they could write or call they don't have anyone to connect with,” said Angela Fujii, a social justice coordinator with the First Unitarian Universalist.SOLACE volunteers are ready to help, but they want to make sure they can share with others about the place where things are kept pretty tight.SOLACE was also briefly barred from visiting during the Obama Administration but the compromise was met.Other groups are providing detainees with services, but SOLACE was the only one allowed to regularly visit. 1148
