SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Fairgrounds announced layoffs Thursday amid the coronavirus pandemic.According to the fairgrounds, staffing will be reduced by 58 percent due to a loss of revenue."Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent ban on mass gatherings, the 22nd District Agricultural Association|Del Mar Fairgrounds (22nd DAA) has suffered severe financial losses to its income streams."The fairgrounds says since March, revenues have fallen by 66 percent "Combined with the postponement of the San Diego County Fair and no patrons for this year’s summer horse racing meet, revenues are estimated to be down 92 percent by the end of the summer."The fairgrounds will give employees 120 days of continued employement with an official layoff date of October 15.“It is with a heavy heart that we must make the difficult decision to reduce staffing at this time,” said Tim Fennell, CEO and General Manager of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. “Until it is safe to host events again, reducing our staffing levels is crucial to the survival of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We must preserve this community treasure in order to continue its legacy for future generations as an economic engine for the region and a beloved entertainment and education destination. I look forward to the day when we can operate at full strength again.” 1334

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Confederate monument at the center of an emotional debate has been removed from inside a city-owned cemetery in San Diego."It's a relief. I'm glad," said Amanda Bergara.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Bergara was one of nearly 2,800 people to sign an online petition calling on San Diego's mayor to take down a confederate monument from inside Mount Hope Cemetery."It's a symbol of hate and disrespect for those who fought with their lives to end slavery," said Bergara.RELATED: Online petition seeks removal of Confederate memorial in San Diego cemeteryBuried in the cemetery are both Union and Confederate soldiers, who later lived in San Diego. The memorial, erected in 1948, names General Stonewall Jackson. In June, ABC 10News discovered the stone on the monument heavily damaged, with vandalism an ongoing issue. Unlike other Confederate markers removed in San Diego, the plot on which the monument sits is privately owned, and the city has maintained its hands are tied. The owner, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and supporters have said such markers are monuments to history. In the end, a city spokesperson says it was removed weeks ago at the request of the Confederate group, presumably to protect it from vandals. The monument is being stored by the city."Hopefully ending the hurt and pain for those who would have seen it and felt that hurt and pain. I hope it never sees the light of day," said Bergara. Not all the hurt is gone. A flagpole remains, along with a marker that includes the name, Stonewall Jackson. Bergara says that the marker must also go.ABC 10News reached out to the United Daughters of the Confederacy about their plans for the flagpole and future plans for the monument, and are waiting to hear back. 1790

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The King family, who launched "Chelsea's Light" after the rape and murder of their daughter Chelsea in 2009, has decided to end the popular "Finish Chelsea's Run" event after eight years. In an interview with 10News from the family's home near Chicago, Chelsea's father, Brent, said they are proud of the impact they have been able to have through "Finish Chelsea's Run," but that it was time to move on from the event."Our family wants to thank everybody that has ever come out to run in our race. It's spectacular. It's beautiful. It brings us a lot of joy. But at the same time, it reminds us how we lost our little girl," King said.Chelsea was a 17-year-old student at Poway High in 2010 when she went for a run at Rancho Bernardo Community Park. A registered sex offender, John Gardner, later pleaded guilty to dragging King into a secluded area near Lake Hodges, raping her, and strangling her to death. He buried the body nearby.Shortly after his arrest, Gardner also admitted to the murder of an Escondido teen, Amber DuBois, who had disappeared a year earlier. The King family began the "Chelsea's Light" Foundation, through which it carried out "Finish Chelsea's Run" and a companion baseball tournament. King says "Chelsea's Light" will continue to exist and raise money. However, he has launched a new nationwide organization called "Protect the Joy."King says he will use the experience he gained helping pass "Chelsea's Law" legislation in several states to protect youth from sex offenders to help build a bigger, stronger organization dedicated to issues of defending children."I've built an organization that mirrors the Sierra Club, or the Surfrider Foundation, or Greenpeace. But instead of protecting the trees, or the coastline, or the whales, I'm going to protect our children," King said. For more information on King's new organization, visit the website: ProtecttheJoy.org. 1952

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man accused of fatally stabbing a motorist seven times in the South Bay during a road rage dispute was convicted of second-degree murder Friday.Jurors found Rickey Vernon Smith, 60, guilty after only one day of deliberations in the Nov. 27, 2018, slaying of 36-year-old Horace Williams Jr.Smith is set to be sentenced on Dec. 11.RELATED: Local man brings families light in times of needThe road rage confrontation between Smith and Williams came to a head near Chula Vista Golf Course, after the two argued along several roadways last November. Williams reportedly threw a soda cup at Smith's vehicle before Smith struck Williams' minivan.Prosecutors say Smith then got out of his truck after cutting Williams off, walked over to his driver's side window, punched Williams in the face and walked away, until walking back and stabbing Williams several times with a knife.Witnesses said Williams got out of his van and collapsed in the roadway, bleeding heavily. The father of five was pronounced dead at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego.RELATED: Father of five killed in Chula Vista road rage stabbingSmith's attorney argued Williams was the aggressor in the case. During a 911 call after the stabbing, Smith told a dispatcher Williams had cut him off and threw a drink at his truck. He added that he followed Williams and later punched and stabbed him out of self-defense after Williams punched him.Smith claimed Williams had lunged at something near the center console of his van and Smith produced his knife "as a last resort," defense attorney Brian Watkins said in court.Prosecutors argued against those claims, citing physical evidence that Smith had forcefully stabbed Williams and was not harmed in the altercation.City News Service contributed to this report. 1801

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle between rideshare companies and drivers' unions is on the ballot in the form of Proposition 22. It's a way for companies like Uber and Lyft to push back against California's Assembly Bill 5, which classifies drivers as employees with benefits instead of independent contractors. The gig companies are fighting the state in court, so they haven't been following those rules since the law went into effect on Jan. 1. Now, the fate of drivers will be in the hands of California voters on Nov. 3.The Yes on 22 campaign is backed by Uber, Lyft, and Doordash. It would classify drivers as independent contractors.Drivers could work towards a stipend to help purchase their own health insurance. They would also get some hourly pay, but only during what's called "engaged time." Yes on 22 says engaged time starts from the moment a driver accepts a ride until they drop the passenger off. It does not include time drivers spend waiting for their next passenger."If you were to compensate for all the time the driver spent on an app, you'd have to force them to accept every ride that comes across which would eliminate their flexibility to choose when they want to work and how long they want to work," said Vetter.Driver Al Porche says that's exactly why he's voting yes."Times are great right now," said Porche. "I've been driving all this year. I switched over from transporting people to delivering food and meals or groceries."According to the New York Times, rideshare companies have spent more than 0 million promoting the campaign, making it the costliest in state history.A "No" vote on Prop 22 would continue the current ruling under AB 5, reclassifying drivers as employees with a swath of rights and protections.Tonje Ettesvoll is against Prop 22, warning it's deceptive if you don't look closely."When you look at all these ads on TV and social media, that is Uber and Lyft's voice, said Ettesvoll. "That is not the driver's voice."She's been driving full-time for four years in San Diego and says it's only gotten worse."They have cut my rate many, many times to the point where I'm driving from 40 hours a week to 60 with the same pay."Nicole Moore with Rideshare Drivers United says about 40% of the job is waiting for your next ride -- time Prop 22 wouldn't pay up for in terms of pay or benefit because it's not considered engaged time."This is work. Just because you're a cashier in a store and you don't have somebody checking out doesn't mean you're not paid," said Moore. "It is definitely helping the billionaires and the people who are running these companies but it is not helping the drivers."The Yes on 22 campaign says if the proposition doesn't pass rides will be harder to find and prices will go up. Gig companies have even threatened to leave the state entirely. 2826
