How does someone who relies on his voice for a living, such as an auctioneer, keep it in top form?You may be surprised to find out what it takes to keep talking up success.As exciting as it is to be in the seats during a live auction, imagine being the man behind the microphone.  "I just love excitement," said professional auctioneer John Korrey. "It's an art."Korrey has been a professional auctioneer for more than 20 years, time he's spent solidifying his sound."There's not any two auctioneers that sound alike," said Korrey. "I can sit here and say countfive, 10, 15, 20, but when I put a chant to it, 'I bid five dollar bid now ten now fifteen fifteen twenty now twenty twenty thirty,' see I'm rolling my tongue and I'm adding some rhythm and I'm breathing."Leading auctions, sometimes for hours on end, has taught Korrey one important thing."We're not a machine," said Korrey. "If it's equipment breaks ... a starter down ... you put a new one in."When my voice goes down I have no wage, I'm done," he said.That's why Korrey spends so much time at the Colorado Voice Clinic, working with Kathe Perez to make sure his voice is okay."Let's start off with an easy feeling of breathing," Perez instructed Korrey. Then the two go through vocal exercises together. "Let's bring it down a key," Perez said. "A big brown bug bit a big brown bear, a big brown bug bit a big brown bear."It's not just vocal exercises that keep his voice in check. A camera goes down Korrey's throat and gives doctors a look at his vocal chords in action."The strobe exam is an artificial form of slow motion that lets us look at the actual vocal folds as they produce sound," said Dr. David Opperman with Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center. "We can pick up subtle abnormalities in the way the chords are moving, if there's a tension difference between the right and left side.  And it's really revolutionized what we do in the voice industry."Opperman said it's not just people like John who need to take care of their voice. Really it's anyone from teachers to customer service operators who does a lot of talking. HUNTINGTON BEACH (CNS) - Two firefighters and two Oktoberfest celebrants remain hospitalized Sunday with injuries resulting from an electrical vault that exploded at the Old World Village's seasonal celebration in Huntington Beach, authorities said. Witnesses at the scene claimed there were actually three explosions. A witness using the Twitter handle kylen1972 posted video on the platform of what he claimed was the second explosion, in which flames can be seen shooting into the air. Restaurant patron Dawn Orlow-Townsend told KCAL9 the lights flickered before the explosions and that she could feel the heat through the walls. She said that after the initial blast, ``you could hear a pin drop.'' She then described a scene of panic as patrons struggled to get out of the building. ``I pray those firefighters are okay,'' she said. ``It was crazy, it was so intense. There was a second explosion and then a third. We just started running, we left our cellphones. We were freaking out. People were running all over. It was crazy.'' She added, ``It's the world we live in right now. After the first explosion, you just don't know what to think. We didn't know what was going on. The first one, the second one -- then there was mass pandemonium. By the third one, we just couldn't get out of there fast enough.'' KCAL9 also talked to Adam Carlson. ``Everyone was just happy and drinking beer and then the first explosion hit and people started backing away, and security tried to calm everyone,'' he said. ``I didn't see anyone get hurt in my immediate response, but while evacuating, we saw -- I personally saw two people that appeared hurt, one had burns. I just tried to comfort who I could.'' At 8:10 p.m., the Huntington Beach Fire Department received news of the explosion at 7561 Center Ave., a dispatcher said. The flames were out at 8:33 p.m., he said. The injured firefighters were already at Old World Village, investigating reports of a possible electrical fire, Huntington Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Lopez told reporters at the scene. They were met by the first explosion when they opened an electrical vault, he said. The second explosion happened within minutes. The injured firefighters and civilians were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Lopez said, but added that they were taking those injuries ``very seriously.'' Firefighters and police worked to evacuate employees and patrons of Old World Village, he said. Broadcast reports indicate there were more than 100 visitors at the celebration. IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) -- Some South Bay parents said they are frustrated with their internet company after they learned of planned outages during the middle of the school day.Michael Crawford’s daughter is in her first year of high school and like many local students, is starting the year online. Crawford said the transition to virtual learning has not been easy for her. When he learned of the Cox communications outage planned for Tuesday, Crawford said it only added insult to injury. According to a notice he received on his door Friday, the planned service outage was slated to begin at 5 a.m. and last until three in the afternoon.He called Cox Communications, but did not get any answers. “I spent an hour on the phone with them. The lady seemed very sympathetic at first and then she [came] back on the phone and said there’s nothing we could do about it,” Crawford said.His neighbors received the same notice about the planned outage. Crawford questioned why the company doesn’t perform the work later in the day or on the weekends.“I pay them 0 a month for my services and that’s just my house,” Crawford said. “This is a lot of money they’re making and I don’t see why they can’t just pay some overtime for a Saturday. We’re all making sacrifices right now and even the big companies need to make the sacrifices as well.”A Cox Communications spokesperson confirmed the outage due to network upgrades. She said the time on the notice is a window and the average time that a customer is without service is two hours.“We recognize the inconvenience to our customers,” said spokesperson Ceanne Guerra. “Our crews are working really hard to complete this work as quickly as possible. When approaching someone about their views on COVID-19, and their habits, he said it’s best to remain calm and open-minded.“It is throwing everyone for a loop,” Stanfield said, “So instead of saying that you’re really getting worked up about this, that’s probably not the best initial approach. It may be ‘I can see that this is really upsetting to you, can you tell me a little bit more about that?'”He said trying to understand, before attempting to be understood, is a good starting place. “Am I willing to consider their perspective, or am I in this to prove them wrong? Which in the end gets us nowhere in all of this, so I think those basic things are really important and critical.”If you know why someone’s habits are a certain way, it’s possible to compromise.“I know some people say compromise is a dirty word, in this case, I think compromise really gets at the fact that I’m wanting to meet someone or be a part of someone’s life the best I can," Stanfield said.If the social awkwardness persists, a ton of people is going to therapy to sort it out right now.“I sometimes equate therapy to taking your car in to get an oil change.
