SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Andrew Van Woerkom has always known he was adopted, but never dwelled on the past for too long.“The biggest wonders I always had was I wonder what she looks like, it would be cool to see somebody that looks like me. I wonder what her name is,” he said.The now 32-year-old San Diego man, like many, has had a roller coaster of a year in 2020. For him, the chaos stems from multiple aspects of life.His family grew from four to five this year after his wife gave birth to their third child. But this baby wasn’t the only addition to the family.Andrew signed up for a genealogy website and through the years has reached out to any distant relatives who pop up, hoping to gain some insight into his biological family. No one ever responded, until this past summer.“She says I’m your aunt so and so. I was there for your birth coach. This is your mom’s name. This is her number and email address and here’s a little message from her and it’s way more information than I ever thought I would get and it’s just this flood of emotion,” he said.This message turned out to be the key to his past. He found out his birth mom, Melissa Willis, had him at 19 and knew she wasn’t ready to become a parent, so she chose to keep the baby and give him up for adoption. She later went on to get married and have five more kids, but always wondered what had happened to her first son. So, in 2020, hearing from him answered many of her own questions.“Then I lost it. Because for 32 years I wondered is he dead in a ditch, is he in jail, is he abused, is he happy,” said Melissa.Both of them vividly remember their first time on the phone together.From Melissa’s perspective: “he said I’m grateful for the choice you made me and the life you gave me, and I said I did everything I did out of love, all I wanted was for you to be happy and healthy and have everything I couldn’t give you.”Andrew says for him, he felt like he had to get out a lifetime of emotion in a handful of minutes.“First five ten minutes of the phone conversation was just sobbing and just expressing all this gratitude and emotion that I didn’t know was pent up inside and all these feelings I had for a person that gave me life. That gave me such an awesome opportunity to have a shot and have a chance at life,” he said.Since then, the two have started introducing each other to their families.This excitement coming at a hard time. Andrew’s adoptive mother is battling cancer for the fourth time, so he’s balancing the joy of finding his birth mom with the stress of supporting his adoptive mom, but thankful for the positive parts of life this year.“At a time when we’ve had so much fear and worry about what’s going to happen in the future, to have those joys… our son being born, meeting my birth mom… just how impeccable is that timing? It’s really gotten us through this year,” said Andrew.Both say that their new relationship is not replacing any other relationships, rather adding to them.When asked if she would change anything about her past, Melissa said she has no regrets.“The very best life I could’ve given myself and my baby is the one that I gave. The one I gave him and his family and me and my family. And I’m so grateful for that choice I made 31 years ago,” she said.This holiday season, everyone has found a new meaning of the word ‘family.’“Family is what you love. Family is what’s close to you, what you hold dear and yeah *we’re definitely not a cookie cutter, molded family. There’s definitely more of a different dynamic to it but I’m okay with it,” said Andrew. 3579
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – When college students were forced out of dorms, some without family or a permanent home didn’t have anywhere to go.Young people who are too old for the foster care system have been some of the hardest hit by COVID-19. Researchers with the Field Center for Children’s Policy found they've been severely impacted by the unemployment, education disruption, homelessness, and food insecurity brought on by the pandemic.“Once I turned 21, because I emancipated from foster care, there weren’t any housing resources for me available. It was kind of, you’re on your own," said Jackie Robles. During the shutdown, Robles was transitioning into graduate school at UCLA.“There was a lot of confusion with dorms shutting down, sororities and fraternities pretty much dismantled. And then also on-campus jobs and part-time jobs, those were all being laid off or non-existent," said Gianna Mulkay.Mulkay is Executive Director of Together We Rise, a nonprofit dedicated to helping foster children. When COVID-19 hit, they moved quickly to support former foster youth in college, calling on volunteers to open their homes, working with hotels to secure rooms, and even purchasing RVs for students.“Before you know it, we were serving 1,200 students, with not just longer-term housing, but making sure they had meal assistance, making sure they stayed enrolled," said Mulkay. Through the rapid response effort, Robles received money for food and rent before landing in a housing program for the homeless.“We’re very nervous about the continued close-downs and what that means for housing for foster youth," said Mulkay. It’s a system that was already in crisis, Mulkay says, noting some of the dismal statistics.Among them: 80% of the prison population has experienced the foster care system, 70% of foster youth go homeless within 18 months of aging out of the system, and 70% of young women in the foster care system will become pregnant by age 21. Mulkay says there's also a huge disparity in education, only 50% of foster youth graduate high school, and just 3% graduate college.“Foster community is hit, and it’s hit hard. We don’t think it will ever be the same again," said Mulkay. But the rapid response effort is showing results; 100% of students who received help re-enrolled for college this fall. They now have funding to provide this critical lifeline to youth in 14 states.“This is definitely way more direct, way more in the trenches of discovering the real issues," said Mulkay. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook left millions of user passwords readable by its employees for years, the company acknowledged Thursday after a security researcher exposed the lapse .By storing passwords in readable plain text, Facebook violated fundamental computer-security practices. Those call for organizations and websites to save passwords in a scrambled form that makes it almost impossible to recover the original text."There is no valid reason why anyone in an organization, especially the size of Facebook, needs to have access to users' passwords in plain text," said cybersecurity expert Andrei Barysevich of Recorded Future.Facebook said there is no evidence its employees abused access to this data. But thousands of employees could have searched them. The company said the passwords were stored on internal company servers, where no outsiders could access them.The incident reveals yet another huge and basic oversight at a company that insists it is a responsible guardian for the personal data of its 2.2 billion users worldwide.The security blog KrebsOnSecurity said Facebook may have left the passwords of some 600 million Facebook users vulnerable. In a blog post , Facebook said it will likely notify "hundreds of millions" of Facebook Lite users, millions of Facebook users and tens of thousands of Instagram users that their passwords were stored in plain text.Facebook Lite is a version designed for people with older phones or low-speed internet connections. It is used primarily in developing countries.Last week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg touted a new "privacy-focused vision " for the social network that would emphasize private communication over public sharing. The company wants to encourage small groups of people to carry on encrypted conversations that neither Facebook nor any other outsider can read.The fact that the company couldn't manage to do something as simple as encrypting passwords, however, raises questions about its ability to manage more complex encryption issues — such in messaging — flawlessly.Facebook said it discovered the problem in January. But security researcher Brian Krebs wrote that in some cases the passwords had been stored in plain text since 2012. Facebook Lite launched in 2015 and Facebook bought Instagram in 2012.Recorded Future's Barysevich said he could not recall any major company caught leaving so many passwords exposed internally. He said he's seen a number of instances where much smaller organizations made such information readily available — not just to programmers but also to customer support teams.Security analyst Troy Hunt, who runs the "haveibeenpwned.com" data breach website, said that the situation is embarrassing for Facebook, but that there's no serious, practical impact unless an adversary gained access to the passwords. But Facebook has had major breaches, most recently in September when attackers accessed some 29 million accounts .Jake Williams, president of Rendition Infosec, said storing passwords in plain text is "unfortunately more common than most of the industry talks about" and tends to happen when developers are trying to rid a system of bugs.He said the Facebook blog post suggests storing passwords in plain text may have been "a sanctioned practice," although he said it's also possible a "rogue development team" was to blame.Hunt and Krebs both likened Facebook's failure to similar stumbles last year on a far smaller scale at Twitter and Github; the latter is a site where developers store code and track projects. In those cases, software bugs were blamed for accidentally storing plaintext passwords in internal logs.Facebook's normal procedure for passwords is to store them encoded, the company noted Thursday in its blog post.That's good to know, although Facebook engineers apparently added code that defeated the safeguard, said security researcher Rob Graham. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pacific Gas & Electric, which is blamed for some of California's deadliest recent fires, knew for years that dozens of its aging power lines posed a wildfire threat but avoided replacing or repairing them, it was reported Wednesday.The Wall Street Journal, using company documents obtained under the federal Freedom of Information Act, reported that the utility told the U.S. Forest Service in 2017 and 2018 that 49 aging steel towers on one transmission line needed replacement and another 57 needed replacement of their hardware and aluminum lines.The Journal previously reported that PG&E delayed safety work on the line, known as the Caribou-Palermo line, for five years.State investigators said an equipment failure on that line sparked a November wildfire that essentially wiped out the Northern California town of Paradise and killed 85 people. It was the deadliest and most destructive in state history.On Wednesday, the Butte County Sheriff's Office identified a previously unnamed victim as 67-year-old Shirley Haley of Paradise.Four other people have been tentatively identified while two bodies remain unidentified.After the fire, PG&E decided to stop using the line, which was built in 1921.PG&E also estimated
