ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — In a display of solidarity with protesters, Escondido officers were seen taking a knee with protesters during a demonstration against police violence on Monday.Photos showed the officers alongside protesters demonstrating against racism, police brutality, and calling for justice for George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis.Long-time resident Vanessa Reyes attended the demonstration which happened outside of Escondido Police Department headquarters. She captured the profound moment in a series of photos she later shared with 10News.“It was very emotional, it was very eye opening for me.”The mother of four said she wanted to document the protests for her children, ages 7- to 22-years-old. Not knowing what to expect, she decided to keep her children home while she snapped images of the demonstration.“I went out there to support the black community and take pictures because I really want to have pictures for my kids to show them this is going to be history, this is real, this is what’s going on.”Reyes described the demonstration as peaceful and emotional, though some times rowdy.“The younger kids, maybe like the 20-25 year old’s, they were very, very involved and wanted to be heard, and the chief of police was willing to let them be heard," said Reyes. “Everybody just wanted to be heard and there was so much emotion and the Escondido Police sat there and listened.”At one point during the protest, Reyes said the crowd, comprised of people of various races, moved towards the police skirmish line. “When we first got there all the officers were across the street, then all of a sudden the protesters moved towards the officers," said Reyes.The tense situation was de-escalated when demonstrators struck a conversation with an officer.“A group of protesters got together and asked the officers if they wanted to take a knee and have a moment of silence for George Floyd and they didn’t hesitate.”Reyes began taking photos to capture one of San Diego's most powerful moments of these demonstrations that saw a weekend marred by violence and riots across the county.The officers, dressed only in their regular uniforms, joined the crowd.“That moment was extremely emotional. You could tell that they [officers] were very genuine and you could tell they really want to make peace and everything better for us.”Unlike some of the chaotic confrontations witnessed in other parts of the country, Reyes said demonstrators and police officers were respectful of each other, and that the police chief was actively encouraging the crowd to share their voice.“Officers tried to ask everybody what could they do.”The scene was similar to a display caught on Sunday in downtown San Diego, where protesters exchanged fist bumps and handshakes with officers. Other moments of unity between police and demonstrators have been captured around the nation.In a statement, an Escondido Police officer said:"Last night I, as well the citizens of Escondido were witness to a peaceful, passionate, justified protest. I want to thank our community for your powerful display of protest, in the peaceful yet profound manner it was delivered.I witnessed 'the few' agitators that attempted to hijack the event with violent and destructive means, met by 'the many' of our community members, protest groups and participants, who thwarted all efforts demanding peace and civility.For this I extend my deepest gratitude. Thank you for supporting us as we were doing our best to support you. We hear you, we stand and or kneel with you and through these difficult times we will not wavier in our mission to serve and protect you.I truly believe it is you, the people, that make this the City Of Choice!"Protests across the county and around the nation began this week after video surfaced showing a Minneapolis officer kneeling on Floyd's neck for nearly 10 minutes. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV)-- Dozens of people joined a paddle-out for the late "godfather of snowboarding" Saturday. Many thanked Jake Burton Carpenter for his legendary contribution to snowboarding. Surfers hit the waves at Swami's Surf Spot to honor a man they said changed their lives. But Jay Saling brought his other favorite board. "Two things I love most in this in the world are snowboarding and surfing, and he helped created both of those," Saling said.Saling organized the paddle-out shortly after the announcement of snowboard legend Jake Burton Carpenter's death on Wednesday. Saling carried a Burton snowboard into the waves and placed it on top of his surfboard as he paddled out.Burton is credited for reinventing the sport and culture of snowboarding. Friends and former Burton Snowboards employees now living in San Diego shared their memories with Carpenter. "At my interview, his first question was, 'Do you snowboard?' And I actually lied to him. I said, 'I did.' I was a skier. And then from that moment when he hired me, I never skied ever since, so I owe my life to Jake," former employee Mike Hoefer said. Many who knew Carpenter said he was a man who thought outside of the box. Not quite turning things upside down, just sideways."You could get on the mountain, but he turned everything sideways and just made everything more fun," surfer and snowboarder Chris Dodds said. It was so much fun that snowboarding became an Olympic sport in 1998. San Diego-born Olympian Shaun White's parents joined in the paddle-out Saturday. Their son paid his respects on Instagram, sharing a photo of the embrace he shared with Carpenter after his gold medal win in Pyeongchang.From Olympians to recreational boarders, Jake Burton Carpenter's impact on snowboarding will live on forever."His passion really created this world for us that we all share, and now we all have in common," former Burton employee Jenny Sehic said. (KGTV) — A 12-year-old who got a hold of a firearm accidentally shot himself in the leg Friday.Escondido Police say the boy was at his home in the unincorporated area of Escondido just before 6 p.m. when he found a revolver. He started handling the firearm and a single round fired, striking him in the leg.The boy was taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life threatening injury. Facebook users in the United States who want to run certain ads on the platform will need to hand over the last four digits of their social security number and a picture of a government-issued ID.The social network now requires anyone who wants to run ads related to political campaigns, civil rights, immigration, guns, economy, and other issues, to prove they're in the United States. Part of the proof required is the last four digits of your Social Security number.The move is part of a series of initiatives by Facebook to increase transparency on the platform after a Russian government-linked troll group spent thousands of rubles?on Facebook ads targeting Americsans ahead of the 2016 presidential election.In addition to a Social Security number, users wishing to buy ads will need to provide a picture of a government-issued ID and a US mailing address. Once Facebook verifies the information submitted, the company will mail a code to the provided address to authorize the user's Facebook account to buy ads.Facebook declined to share what services it uses to verify Social Security numbers and other personal details. This is no longer the case.The change, Facebook told CNN, is because advertisers that might not traditionally be considered "political" will also be subject to the new rules.It's not only ads advocating for or against a political candidate that qualify for the archive. Any ad mentioning a candidate will be subject to the new rules.In April, Facebook released a list of 20 "issues" -- including as abortion, education, guns, health, immigration, military and terrorism -- that apply to the new approval process.The last issue on Facebook's list is "values," which the company considers "issues that discuss the values used in determining societal standards, such as patriotism."The new rules mean many marketing campaigns will be subject to the new guidelines. For instance, Super Bowl ads that have in recent years taken on a more socially conscious tone. Lang Doesn't Have to Indulge Your Constant Cravings."Facebook said ads about civil rights will be subject to its stricter rules but the company told CNN this particular ad "would not be deemed political or issue content as it focuses on the journey of an individual rather than a civil rights discussion."CNN also asked Facebook if the same ad was running in a state where there was a ballot initiative on civil rights would it then be considered an issue or political ad. The company did not provide a response.Facebook says it plans to hire up to 4,000 more people to review and verify political ads.
