BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- China backs European efforts for further integration and supports current initiatives by the European Union to tackle the debt crisis, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Wednesday.Hong told a regular press briefing that China will work with the international community to help stabilize the global financial market and promote the recovery and growth of the world economy."We have noted that the EU has made a series of important proposals to address the European sovereign debt crisis and we hope such proposals can work to help stabilize the market, restore market faith and prevent the crisis from deteriorating," Hong added.Europe's powerhouses France and Germany agreed Monday on a series of reforms aimed at changing the European Union treaty to impose tough controls on eurozone budgets. The new treaty would include automatic sanctions for states that fail to observe the 3 percent deficit rule, as well as a budget-balancing rule across the eurozone.New and significant decisions to tackle the crisis might be made during the EU summit to be held from Dec. 8 to 9, Hong predicted.Leaders from the 27 member states of the European Union will meet in Brussels on Dec. 8-9 to discuss how to resolve the eurozone crisis.

HAIKOU, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China will actively push forward maritime cooperation with the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in light of the guidelines on conduct in the South China Sea, a Foreign Ministry official has said.Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin made the remarks during an international seminar on implementing the Declaration on Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and maintaining the navigational freedom and security of the waterway.Early next year, China will hold a senior officials' meeting and working group meeting with ASEAN countries on the implementation of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), Liu said in an interview with Xinhua on the sideliens of the seminar held in Haikou, Hainan Province, from Dec. 14-15..The senior officials' meeting is a guiding mechanism for implementing the DOC at governmental level. Under it, China will hold a series of seminars and carry out a set of cooperative projects, so as to further advance cooperation with ASEAN nations, he said.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao proposed to establish a three-billion-yuan China-ASEAN maritime cooperation fund at the 14th China-ASEAN summit and the Commemorative Summit to Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of China-ASEAN Relations in November.China hopes the fund will contribute to the implementation of the DOC and further enhance cooperation with ASEAN nations, said Liu.The State Oceanic Administration held a South China Sea oceanography seminar in Qingdao on Dec. 12, he said, adding China will hold a series of seminars on topics ranging from marine research, search and rescue, environmental protection, navigation safety and combating maritime crimes.Liu said the maintenance of maritime security as well as navigation safety and freedom is very important to East Asian countries, for the economic development of East Asia is largely export-oriented.As an important pathway for foreign trade for China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the ASEAN nations, security on the South China Sea is critical for these countries' economic development, he said.Stressing that navigation freedom and security on the sea should be guaranteed, he said China will continue to strengthen cooperation with countries surrounding the South China Sea to protect against threats. The DOC was signed by China and the ASEAN countries in November 2002 as a code of conduct for all parties involved in diplomatic issues in the South China Sea.It is a political document aimed at safeguarding peace, stability and prosperity in the South China Sea, advancing pragmatic cooperation and creating favorable conditions for the interested countries to ultimately settle their disputes by peaceful negotiation.

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Police from China and Angola have jointly busted a criminal gang that kidnapped Chinese females and forced them into prostitution in Angola, according to China's Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday.Police rescued 19 Chinese females during the operation on Oct. 25, when 11 suspects were arrested in Angola and five were caught in China, according to a statement from the ministry. Those female victims and suspects have been transferred back to China, said the statement. In order to boost international cooperation against human trafficking, China had ratified the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, in February 2010.Moreover, Chinese police have entered into cooperation agreements with more than 50 countries, which contain anti-human trafficking terms.

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Heading football frequently may cause brain damage leading to subtle but serious declines in thinking and coordination skills, a new study suggested as quoted by media reports Wednesday.Researchers used an advanced MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) technique to analyze changes in brain white matter of 32 adult amateur soccer players who head balls 436 times a year on average. The study found players who head football quite frequently -- with 1,000 or more a year -- showed abnormalities similar to traumatic brain injuries suffered in car accidents."This is the first study to look at the effects of heading on the brain using sophisticated diffusion tensor imaging," said Dr. Michael Lipton, a leading researcher and associate director of the Gruss Magnetic Resonance Research Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City."We found the real implication for players isn't from hitting headers once in a while, but repetitively, which can lead to degeneration of brain cells," he added. The researchers compared neurological images of study participants, whose average age was 31, and found those with the highest volume of headers had abnormalities in five areas of the brain, responsible for attention, memory, physical mobility and high-level visual functions. The findings come in the wake of mixed reports on the so-called "cognitive" consequences of frequently heading soccer balls at practice.Dr. Chris Koutures, a pediatrician and sports medicine specialist in Anaheim Hills, California, said the retrospective imaging study was fascinating, but needs more data to effectively determine safe header limits, especially for younger players.Dr. Lipton agreed neuropsychological damage from headers would be hard for a coach or physician to notice since cognitive problems develop gradually, and even players might not be aware of mild memory loss."We can't tell an individual today not to be heading a ball, but caution is a good thing," Lipton said. "We need more research for definitive answers and we have the advanced imaging tools to do it."

KUWAIT CITY, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Two warships from China on Sunday docked at Kuwait's Shuwaikh port to start a five-day official visit to the Gulf Arab emirate. The tour by the destroyer "Wuhan" and the frigate "Yulin" marked the first visit by Chinese naval vessels to Kuwait since the two countries established diplomatic ties 40 years ago."This visit marks a historic occasion and Kuwaiti navy looks forward to future cooperation to improve the relationship and friendship between our two navies," said Colonel Khaled Ahmad Abdallah from Kuwait's navy. The flotilla was part of the ninth Chinese naval convoy to conclude its escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia.Commander of the flotilla Guan Jianguo hopes the visit would enhance mutual cooperation between the two navies, which in turn would contribute to boosting bilateral relations. The flotilla would visit Oman after its stay in Kuwait.
