The four-night convention begins with a roll call on Monday evening from delegates who take turns stating their pick for the nominee. California Republican National Committeewoman and Delegate to Republican National Convention Harmeet Dhillon said they are expecting a unanimous vote for President Trump and VP Mike Pence.Then, top republicans and citizens will speak through the next few nights. She said everyone in Charlotte has taken multiple coronavirus tests and said she feels safe with the health guidelines being practiced.Dhillon also said that she encouraged people who would not be flying to the RNC to donate the money saved from staying home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - PhaseBio, a company based out of San Diego and Pennsylvania, announced it would be starting a clinical trial for a drug that could help keep severe COVID-19 patients from needing a ventilator. “If you are infected with coronavirus and you’re admitted to hospital, we’re trying to catch those patients before they have a rapid decline and prevent intubation or other more severe complications of the coronavirus,” said Jonathan Mow, CEO of PhaseBio. The drug is called PB1046 and is a “novel, once-weekly, subcutaneously-injected vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) receptor.” It was originally being researched for use on patients with high blood pressure, said Mow. But they pivoted when they realized it might have properties that could help prevent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a potentially deadly condition caused by the inflammation of the lungs due to the body’s immune response to the coronavirus. “We realized that the characteristics of our drug fit nicely to what we would want to control in the complications in coronavirus patients,” said Mow. The clinical trial will take place at 20 different locations and involve about 210 subjects who have been hospitalized and require oxygen, but have not been intubated. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Next time you head off to your gate to catch your flight, make sure you look over your bin upon leaving the TSA checkpoint.Transportation Security Administration officials say the agency collected 6,030.44 in unclaimed money that passengers left behind at security checkpoints last fiscal year, between Oct. 1, 2018, and Sept. 30, 2019. Of that, ,899.09 was in foreign currency.In San Diego, airport officials say ,809.39 was left behind by travelers.TSA says the money consisted of loose change and paper currency passengers removed from and left in bins during the security screening process.While San Diego saw nearly ,000 left behind, it was nowhere close to the top five U.S. airports:John F. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New numbers show the trash continues to pile up at San Diego landfills.San Diego County's daily waste disposal per person increased from 5.5 pounds in 2016 to 5.6 pounds in 2017, according to the research group, Equinox Project, the nonprofit institute at University of San Diego."When the economy's booming and there's more disposable income, people tend to buy more stuff. That means more packaging, and it tends to come with more waste," said Nilmini Silva-Send, a researcher with the Equinox Project.San Diego County's disposal rate is among the highest in the state.More trash means more greenhouse gasses released and less landfill space. As for the biggest trash makers, Del Mar comes in at more than 17 pounds per person, followed by Coronado and Carlsbad. The Del Mar Fairgrounds and Naval Base Coronado are among several possible factors. "The higher the socioeconomic level, the more waste they will tend to produce," said Silva-Send. The cities tossing the least amount of trash per person are Oceanside, Chula Vista, and Imperial beach. The biggest increase for trash disposal happened in Santee, while the biggest year-to-year decreases were in Imperial Beach and National City. The waste report is part of the Equinox Project's annual Quality of Life Dashboard report, which provides a snapshot of economic and environmental trends in the region. 1389

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Native American artists are finding new audiences and venues to display their craft as American Indian stories enter pop culture."Some of us refer to it as 'Native Sovereignty,' being in charge of your own narrative," says Joely Proudfit, the California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center Director. "Who better to tell our story than us?"Proudfit says the change is welcome after decades of Native Americans being depicted poorly in pop culture, mainly because non-native people have told the stories.Thanks to new ways of telling stories, like streaming services, social media, and more access to film festivals and book publishing, that's changing.There's also a greater demand for stories by Native American voices."I think audiences are hungry for not diversity for diversity's sake. They're just interested in other communities, other worlds, engagement, and really authenticity," says Proudfit.The California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center and Cal State San Marcos sponsor the California American Indian & Indigenous Film Festival. Since starting in 2013, it has grown from small groups in a classroom to taking over the Pechanga Resort and Casino.It's now the largest Native American Film Festival on tribal land in the country.The festival's growth parallels the rise of other Native American voices in different mediums."The biggest change is the increased number of native voices and the medium in which native folks have been able to express their creativity," says Dr. David Kamper, the Chair of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University.Kamper says he sees more American Indian voices in books, online, and in fashion. He says that representation, whether it's Nike's N7 line of shoes and clothes or best-sellers like "The Only Good Indians" or "The Beadworkers," is essential to helping Native Americans define their culture in modern-day America."Seeing native films, seeing native art, seeing native clothing, fashion, that is done in a contemporary way, is a very loud statement against a settler-colonial narrative that native people aren't here anymore," Kamper says.He also points to online messaging like the hashtag #OnNativeLand as one way the next generation is reclaiming their identity.Proudfit says she's excited for what the future holds for Native American representation in Pop Culture."I think it's just a really exciting time for indigenous cinema, indigenous arts, and native storytelling.
