There's a new way to do contact tracing in the works and it could make a difference for health care providers during flu season.Vibrent Health just got a contract with major health institutions to develop the platform.Part of the idea is for users to enter their symptoms and find out if they're more likely to have the flu or COVID-19.“Health care facilities do get bombarded with perhaps people thinking that they have COVID when they just had flu, so the idea is how do you help the health care organizations to reduce some of the burden,” said Praduman Jain, founder and CEO of Vibrent Health.The technology is designed to be embedded in other apps that organizations and intuitions already use, like a university application for students.“So, make it easy for people and don't try to change their behavior,” said Jain. “They are already using certain applications that this can become a part of.”The app uses Wi-Fi networks to find out if you may have been close to someone with the virus.It could help cut some contact tracing work for public health departments. Instead of calling everyone that may have come in contact with the virus, the app can report that information.“There are only so many people, so many human beings, so many people that public health departments can hire to do that contact tracing, so technology becomes really important,” said Jain.Development is still in its early stages. Right now, the focus is on fine-tuning the algorithms to evolve along with changing data on the coronavirus.Broader testing is expected in the first few months of 2021. 1585
Thomson Reuters is eliminating 12 percent of its global workforce.The media company is drastically shrinking its staff, cutting 3,200 jobs and closing 55 offices by 2020. Reuters says it will employ roughly 23,800 people — down from its current workforce of 27,000.Reuters revealed its plans for the future at its annual investor day in Toronto. The stock is up 3 percent on the news."Thomson Reuters is routinely looking at ways to run our global business operations more efficiently and effectively," a Reuters spokesman told CNN Business."This disciplined approach sometimes includes the need to make personnel, or other, changes which allow us to balance our internal resources with the needs of our customers in a highly competitive environment."The company said a "majority" of the impacted employees have been notified, but it declined to say which divisions are affected.Part of Reuters' plans includes reducing its capital expenditures by 3 percent and cutting the number of products it sells. The company sells a newswire service, financial software, images and services for the legal industry.In October, Reuters sold a majority stake of its Financial and Risk unit to the private equity firm Blackstone Group for billion. Reuters joins other media companies in recently announcing layoffs. This election season, Demetrius Short is hustling to get his people to the polls.“We have the wonderful opportunity as African American men to be here today,” Short said to a group of young African American voters outside a polling site in Nashville, Tennessee. “The next John Lewis might be right here.”Short is the founder and CEO of the Transformation Life Center and Steps of Success 5K, nonprofits mentoring youth living in underserved communities. Now, Short and his team are using physical fitness to inspire political change by leading young Black men on runs and talking about becoming better people afterwards.“Going out, taking your niece and nephew that may not have a father, being that father or mother example to them and just be the change you want to see,” Short said.During this presidential election, Short is reaching out to college students from Fisk University, a private historically Black college in Nashville.“We’re here to come out here and inspire change in our community and inspire young people to really vote,” said Myles Harris, a recent Fisk University graduate.Harris says he is motivated to get more members of African American communities to have their voices heard and their votes counted.“A lot of people don’t vote because they don’t see the point, they don’t understand why it’s so important,” he said.Many members in the local African American community do understand the importance of this election and are calling this political movement inspiring.“Us Black folks are still fighting. It’s time for a change, man,” said Norman T. Wilson. “So, it’s good that they are trying to get them to vote. votes matter, whoever they vote for.”According to the Pew Research Center, the Black voter turnout rate declined in 2016, falling to 59.6% after reaching a record-high 66.6% in 2012.That’s a trend Short wants to change, not by swaying young people’s votes, but through politics, one step and one vote at a time“We don’t have to riot.
