A Texas jail guard suffered a heart attack two years ago, and if not for a group of inmates, he could have lost his life, WFAA-TV reported.Gary Grimm of Weatherford, Texas is thankful for those inmates who gave the now 52-year-old retired jail guard a second-chance at life."Instead of overtaking me and taking my gun, and killing me or taking a hostage and escaping, they looked at me as a human being," Grimm told WFAA. The inmates reportedly had to knock down a locked gate to get to Grimm after they realized he was having a medical emergency. The group of eight inmates were able to get the attention of others in the jail, who were able to help Grimm seek medical attention. Grimm never got the opportunity to personally thank the inmates as they were transferred to other institutions."I get emotional. If they wished harm for me, all they had to do was sit there and do nothing," Grimm told WFAA. Grimm said he treated inmates the way he would want to be treated. Perhaps, that is why they came to his aid when he needed it."I don't care if they're a drug user, hot check writer, or child molester. They're still a human being. I don't have to like what they did, but it's not my position to be the judge and jury," Grimm told the station. 1275

A pair of districts in the Midwest will add Muslim women to the ranks of the US Congress for the first time.Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party's nominee, will secure their respective seats in strongly Democratic districts following primary victories earlier this year that effectively decided their races.Tlaib is endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, a burgeoning left-wing group that also counts New York Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among its members.Omar, in addition to being one of the first Muslim women in Congress, will also be the first Somali-American member. She came to the US more than two decades ago as a refugee. Tlaib actually campaigned with Omar ahead of the latter's primary race earlier this year.Omar also had the backing of Ocasio-Cortez in her primary race, and she will come to Congress having been an open critic of the Israeli government's treatment of Palestinians.Omar will take the seat vacated by Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress. Ellison is leaving Congress as he vies to become Minnesota attorney general.Tlaib will fill the seat formerly occupied by Michigan Democratic Rep. John Conyers, who left office last year amid accusations of sexual misconduct. She ran unopposed on the general election ballot following her primary win.Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants and became the first Muslim female member of Michigan's state legislature a decade ago. A mother of a 9-month-old baby is upset after she says her daughter received a second degree burn while she was in a daycare in Detroit on Friday.Her daughter attended Lafayette Day Care Center on E. Lafayette Street in Detroit.It was a seemingly normal day for Sabrina Shellman when she picked up her kids at the center Friday afternoon. It wasn’t until she got home, she noticed a burn her daughter’s leg.The family took the baby to the doctors, filed a police report and then contacted Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit.“It’s frustrating, it’s heartbreaking, it makes me really, really angry,” Shellman said.When she picked up her kids, 9-month-old Jayla and 4-year-old Jayden, she said no one told her about the injury.It wasn’t until she changed the baby that she said she noticed something was wrong.“That’s when I noticed the burn on the back of her leg,” she said. “No one bothered to call me. No one informed me of this at all.”Sabrina rushed Jayla to the doctors, who told her it’s a second degree burn. She immediate called the daycare.Shellman said a manager said the injury did not happen at the daycare. The mother said she thinks they are trying to cover it up.“My daughter received a burn," she said. "They should be ashamed of themselves, definitely, they should be ashamed.”Sabrina asked her son if he saw what happened, he says one of the caregivers did it.“Spilled oatmeal on her leg, that’s what he told me,” she said.Now, Sabrina said baby Jayla has been traumatized.“She’s screaming, she’s yelling, she won’t stop crying.”The daycare manager didn’t want to talk on-camera, but said they don’t know how the baby got burned and claims it didn’t happen at the daycare.Sabrina says that’s a lie.“Mistakes happen but the fact that you all tried to cover it up and didn’t bother to call me that says a lot about them,” she said.The most recent report from the state shows the daycare has no violations. WXYZ has requested more information to see if there have been any violations in the past.Shellman has pulled her children from the daycare.She said she is consulting with an attorney because she said someone needs to be held accountable for her daughter’s injury. 2209

A standoff between police and an armed suspect that resulted in one officer's death and the wounding of another remains underway Saturday afternoon in Pomona, California, near Los Angeles, more than 15 hours after it began.The suspect is barricaded inside an apartment home after fatally shooting an officer and wounding a second one, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department."It is with a heavy heart that I must report that one officer did not survive," Pomona police Chief Michael Olivieri tweeted early Saturday morning.
