Two Democratic congresswomen on Tuesday introduced a bill that would block federal funding for the 2026 men's World Cup until the US Women's National Team earns "fair and equitable wages compared to the US men's team."The legislation, co-sponsored by Reps. Doris Matsui of California and Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, comes amid the team's longstanding battle for equal pay.Months before the tournament, members of the Women's National team filed a lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation, claiming they deserve to be paid what the American men are paid for their international performances. In one hypothetical case cited in the lawsuit, if the women's and men's teams both won 20 straight games in a season, the women would make 38% what the men do.Matsui and DeLauro say the federal government shouldn't make any financial contribution for the 2026 tournament, which will be spread through venues across the US, Canada and Mexico, until the playing field is level for female athletes."Until the USSF provides real reforms ensuring equitable pay for our male and female athletes, the U.S. government has no business contributing potentially billions of dollars in support for the 2026 World Cup," Matsui said in a statement.DeLauro said federal funding for the men's tournament in 2026 would be "encouraging the pay gap to continue.""Congress needs to ensure women in the same job are getting the same pay," DeLauro said in a statement. Two weeks ago, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin introduced a Senate version of the bill, which would similarly block federal funding until US Soccer agrees to "provide equitable pay."Still, it's unclear just how much money would actually be withheld if the bills succeed in Congress. 1728
What do waffles have to do with severe weather safety?Everything apparently.Believe it or not, FEMA depends on Waffle House to gauge just how dangerous conditions are during hurricanes. It's called the “Waffle House index.”It has three levels: If you see a Waffle House that's open and has a full menu, the area is in the clear. If it has a limited menu, people should probably start making safety plans. That means the restaurant either has no power or is running on a generator. And if it's closed, there's likely severe flooding or damage in the area and people should get to safety. Waffle House locations rarely close, so it has to be a really extreme case of severe weather.“We may have to shut some restaurants down,” says Pat Warner, the director of public relations and external affairs for Waffle House. “That's a little tough for us because all our restaurants are 24/7. We don't know how to turn things off so we really have to shut down a restaurant in an orderly fashion.” Waffle House has a storm center outside of Atlanta. That's where the company tracks the storm and sends out information to its restaurants. But it also has people on the ground looking at conditions. Those people are the ones who have a more accurate view of what's happening and help decide when restaurants should close.Waffle House is prepared with a jump team that actually takes over for regular staff during a storm. This helps restaurants to continue operating while employees go home and stay safe with their families. 1522
VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis’ vicar for Rome has tested positive for the coronavirus in the first case of a cardinal close to the pope known to be infected.Cardinal Angelo De Donatis had been in touch with Francis in recent weeks — apparently not in person, however — over the cardinal’s initial decision to close all Rome churches in line with an Italian government shutdown decree.De Donatis reversed himself after Francis intervened, and allowed diocesan churches to remain open for individuals to pray. The pope is technically bishop of Rome, but he delegates the day-to-day running of the diocese to his vicar, De Donatis, 66. The Rome church said De Donatis was in good condition at Rome's Gemelli hospital and was receiving antiviral treatment. The Holy See has said six people have tested positive for the virus in the Vatican, none of them the pope or his closest advisers. 891
