CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - More than a dozen people were forced out their homes late Tuesday night after a driver crashed her car into a fire hydrant at an apartment complex in Chula Vista, causing water to be sent nearly 30 feet into the air.At around 11:45 p.m., Chula Vista police responded to reports of a geyser spewing water into the air on 3rd Avenue.The geyser, from a broken fire hydrant, flooded a nearby apartment complex, forcing the evacuation of 16 people from six units, four of which were heavily flooded.A black car that struck the hydrant tried to leave just after the wreck, but the car's female driver eventually came back to speak with officers. Police questioned the young driver, but she was released.City crews spent a few hours helping clear the water from the apartments. 807

(KGTV) - A documentary filmmaker is focusing his lens on migrants in Tijuana, hoping to show what life is like for migrants waiting to enter the U.S."Stuck in Tijuana" shows the crisis around the migrant shelters, where filmmaker Charlie Minn says he found a humanitarian crisis."I think we've all been there in life, at one point or another where we ask for something, a job, a relationship, a school, a career," Minn says. "The migrants are asking for acceptance."Minn says he found one shelter where 1,000 people were sharing one bathroom. In other areas he found children living without their parents.He adds that Tijuana's new reputation as the murder capital of the world makes things even more dangerous for migrants in the shelters.Minn spent the last week visiting college classes around San Diego to show the documentary to students. He hopes to inspire them to fight for change.This is Minn's third documentary focused on the San Diego/Tijuana border region. His first one, "Mexico's Bravest Man," profiled a police chief in Tijuana who survivied eight assasination attempts. The next movie, "77 Minutes," examined the 1984 shooting massacre in a San Ysidro McDonald's.Minn says he's captivated by the border in this area, because it's unlike any other region in the US.The movie will premiere Friday, March 22nd at the Theater Box in downtown San Diego. (KGTV) - Two threats to shoot students at Bonita Vista High School spread in a snap on social media Sunday, scaring students and parents, making them wary to go back to class Monday."It kinda caught fire on Snapchat that's where it spread like wildfire and everyone was talking about it it was everywhere," Bonita Vista High senior Andrew Garcia said. It was a screenshot of an Instagram comment that read, "Shooting up on the campus Monday. I like some of you. Try to skip school if you value your life." Another comment below read, "I don't think you guys are gonna wanna hide in the 900s," apparently referring to the campus' "math village."Another threat coming out around 9:30 p.m. with a similar message. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Energy infrastructure company LS Power unveiled what it is calling the largest battery energy storage project in the world Wednesday in the East Otay Mesa community, intended to enhance the power grid's reliability and reduce energy costs.The Gateway Energy Storage project -- currently operating at 230 megawatts and scheduled to reach 250 MW by the end of the month -- follows another LS Power battery project in Vista. Christmas tree sellers around the country are struggling with shortages for a variety of reasons including wildfires in the west, the coronavirus pandemic and the 2008 recession.Exacerbating existing supply issues is a rise in demand for real trees in 2020 as people are home more with coronavirus pandemic safety measures, and want the aroma and feel of a real tree.California Christmas tree farmers are reporting a surge in attendance at their locations so far this year. The National Christmas Tree Association says there was an “unprecedented level” of early inquiries from customers wanting to know when tree farms would open this fall.Christmas tree sellers from New York to California are selling out fast because of the high demand and fewer trees to sell.The issue is impacting would-be Christmas tree shoppers in Canada, too.The Canadian Christmas Tree Growers Association says following the 2008 recession, Christmas tree farmers in North America didn’t plant as many trees as usual and didn’t move ahead with planned expansions until later.Since it takes 6-10 years for a tree to grow and be ready for ornaments and lights, some of those post-2008 decisions are still impacting supply.The National Christmas Tree Association has reported a smaller supply of harvestable trees since 2015 because of fewer trees being planted.Drought conditions and several years of intense wildfires in the western U.S. and Canada as well as the mid-Atlantic states have also taken a toll on Christmas tree farms, destroying their trees or limiting growth opportunities.The surge in coronavirus cases is also limiting the availability of Christmas trees around the country, as some suppliers and sellers are making the difficult decision to close or reduce hours and capacity to keep staff and shoppers safe.For those with a National forest nearby, the U.S. Forest Service allows people to cut down a tree from their lands with a few conditions.
