SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The escalation in Iran is stirring up terrifying memories for the family of a San Diego man, held there for more than a year during one of the most intense hostage standoffs in history."I was trying to get information. All I had heard from the State Department was that the embassy had been overrun," said Dotty Morefield, whose husband, Richard, was one of 52 people taken hostage in Iran in November 1979. "I picked up the phone and thought if anyone was going to know it would be the news agency, and Brad picked up."It's been more than 40 years since Morefield picked up the phone and called 10News for the first time. 10News assignment editor Brad McLellan picked up the phone."Mrs. Morefield told me her husband had just been taken hostage in Iran and I was shocked. I didn't know what to say," McLellan recalls. Finally after 444 days, the hostages were released."I was just I was beyond excited," Morefield said. And here, Morefield and her kids — and a sea of supporters — celebrated her husband's return."He was stunned," Morefield said. "There were people from Lindbergh Field to the townhouse I was renting in Tierrasanta. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The conference and convention industry has been hard-hit by the pandemic.With limitations on gatherings and worry about health, most of the in-person part of the industry came to a standstill."COVID-19 has made this year an extraordinarily challenging and unpredictable year," said President and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center Rip Rippetoe.By Rippetoe's numbers, from March through the end of 2020, they'll have lost more than 100 events at the convention center.Rippetoe said the estimated financial loss to the San Diego region is more than one billion dollars."It doesn't just include us," said Rippetoe. "There are restaurants, hotels, attractions, retail. All the things that people may not realize are affected."It's the same problem for spots up and down the state and across most of the country."We have had zero conferences, I believe since March," said Madonna Inn Marketing Manager Amanda Rich.The Madonna Expo Center in San Luis Obispo can hold around 2,000 people, and prior to COVID-19, they hosted multiple events a week."It's been a huge change for us and our staff," Rich said. "It's not intended to even be modeled exactly like that.
