NANNING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China and member states on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are seeking new cooperation opportunities at the 7th China-ASEAN Expo while reviewing fruitful results from more than nine months' operation of China-ASEAN free trade area (CAFTA).The 7th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, with the theme of free trade and new opportunities, opens Tuesday in Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.Buoyed by the zero-tariff framework under the CAFTA, more than 2,000 enterprises from home and abroad are taking part in the 7th CAEXPO, which has 4,600 exhibition booths. Jia Qinglin (C Front), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, announces the opening of the 7th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) in Nanning, capital of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Oct. 19, 2010.Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin, Indonesian Vice President Boediono, and other high-ranking officials, businessmen and scholars from China and the 10 ASEAN nations also gathered in the southern Chinese city to attend the opening of the expo and the summit. The much-anticipated CAFTA was formally launched on Jan.1, 2010. With a population of 1.9 billion and a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of 6 trillion US dollars, the CAFTA ranks as the world's third largest trade zone following North American FTA and the European FTA.From January to September, the two-way trade volume reached 211.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 44 percent year-on-year, an eye-catching growth as the world economy just saw a turnaround after the financial crisis.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said in a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the summit that cementing and reinforcing the China-ASEAN strategic partnership is in the common interests of the two sides.

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The United States has repeatedly blocked investment from Chinese companies on national security grounds, a protectionist move that will only harm its own interests, analysts say.Eight U.S. congressmen recently asked the Obama administration to scrutinize a deal between Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei and the American operator Sprint Nextel on national security grounds. It was not the first time Huawei's attempts to break into the U.S. market have been stymied. Earlier its buyout attempt of 3Com was summarily dismissed by the U.S. government.Citing national security concerns again, a bipartisan group of 50 lawmakers in July requested that the government investigate an investment project of China's Anshan Iron and Steel Group (Ansteel), China's fourth largest steelmaker, which plans to establish a joint rebar venture with a U.S. partner in Mississippi."It is inappropriate for some U.S. lawmakers to label regular business behavior as a move that threatens national security," Yao Jian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, recently said about Ansteel's investment plan."I hope the United States can create a better investment environment for Chinese enterprises," he said.Chinese analysts said the actions were sheer protectionism, adding that national security concerns is only a lame excuse by U.S. authorities, whose true intention is to protect the interests of domestic enterprises and industries. Moreover, standing up to China's allegedly unfair trade practices can easily earn the congressmen much needed political chips in the upcoming mid-term election in November, the analysts said. The setback that Huawei and Ansteel suffered is only the tip of the iceberg. Actually, blocking investment from Chinese companies in the name of national security has morphed into a knee-jerk reaction that could only harm America's own interests.Emcore Corporation, a U.S. fiber optics producer, announced in late June that it has abandoned a joint venture in partnership with China's Tangshan Caofeidian Investment Corporation because the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States "has certain regulatory concerns about the transaction."

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo has highlighted a nationwide inspection of enforcement of the country's Law on Energy-saving to build a resource-efficient and environment-friendly society.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, made the remarks on Tuesday in an instruction to the committee's inspection.Energy-saving was a pressing and tough issue that involved all industries and occupations, and the inspection should push Chinese companies and corporations to reduce their energy consumption in production and operation, Wu said. The inspection would also promote implementation on the NPC Standing Committee's resolution to deal with climate change and other related Chinese laws and regulations, Wu said.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao reaffirmed Chinese positions and perspectives on issues such as strengthening global financial and economic regulation and promoting sustainable development at the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) held here on Monday and Tuesday.Wen said currently the world economy sees slow recovery but still faces great uncertainty. All countries should continue to prioritize consolidating the momentum of the economic recovery and maintain proper macroeconomic policies. They should also take prudent and sound approach to decide when and how fast they should apply the exit policy, Wen said. The ASEM members should enhance cooperation to strengthen global financial and economic regulation, tackle the root cause of the international financial and economic crisis and promote the vigorous, sustainable and balanced growth of the world economy.China will continue to support the European countries beset with the sovereign debt crisis and help them overcome the difficulties, the premier said.Wen said the Chinese government has always paid great attention to the global warming issue.Under the extremely difficult circumstances of the global financial crisis, the Chinese government is still working hard and this year China is expected to fulfill the basic target of reducing energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product, he said.China is willing to continue to provide support in its capacity for other developing countries on fighting global warming within the frameworks of South-South cooperation and bilateral cooperation, he said.Beijing will, as always, play a positive and constructive role to work together with other countries for comprehensive, balanced and binding results at a major conference on climate change scheduled for later this year in Cancun, Mexico, Wen said. The premier said currently global issues such as energy and food security, natural disaster, terrorism and piracy pose a serious threat to the economic development and social stability in Asia and Europe.Countries should join hands to tackle food security, a pressing task that needed to be solved as a top priority, Wen said. Therefore, Wen said, countries should make every effort to raise grain production, which was the key to solving food security, strengthen agricultural policy coordination, consistently improve agricultural products trade environment, actively push forward exchange and cooperation in agricultural science and technology, try hard to boost the capability in preventing and fighting natural disasters and enhance food assistance to developing countries that suffer from food shortage.

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese leaders on Wednesday met with visiting Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and discussed advancing bilateral relations.Wu Bangguo, chairman of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, the country's top legislature, said China and Italy both faced severe challenges and new opportunities as the international situation was undergoing profound changes. As the two countries shared a wide range of common interests, Wu said, it was in the fundamental interests of both peoples to develop China-Italy ties, which also worked for world peace and development. As this year saw the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations, the two countries should maintain exchanges and dialogues at all levels, take care of each other's major concerns and deepen political trust, Wu said.Wu proposed all-round trade and economic cooperation, particularly in the fields of environment, science and technology, small and medium-sized businesses.Wu called on the two countries to step up communication and coordination under the China-EU and Asia-Europe frameworks and the international organizations like the United Nations and Group 20 in a bid to build a fair and reasonable international political and economic system.Napolitano, on his first visit to China as Italian head of state, said Italy appreciated China's remarkable economic and social development. The 85-year-old underscored Italy's commitment to developing ties with China, saying Italy and Europe could not develop without building closer links with China.Napolitano said Italy would take care of China's major concerns, enhance trade and economic cooperation and expand exchanges of visits.
