NEW YORK — The Uncle Ben’s rice brand is changing its name to Ben's Original. Parent company Mars Inc. is the latest company to drop a logo criticized as a racial stereotype. Mars said the Ben's Original packaging will hit stores in 2021. Since the 1940s, the rice boxes have featured a white-haired Black man, sometimes with a bowtie. According to Uncle Ben's website, the name "Uncle Ben" refers to a "legendary Texan farmer, Uncle Ben who was known for his exceptionally high-quality rice." Frank Brown, a maitre d' at a Chicago restaurant, posed for "Uncle Ben's" portrait, which has since served as the brand's logo.Critics have said the image evoke servitude. Global President for Mars Food Fiona Dawson says the company is still deciding on an image to accompany the new name. Pressure on brands to retire racial imagery have intensified amid the Black Lives Matter protests over police killings of unarmed African Americans. NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A Pasco County, Florida family is suing the Pasco County School Board alleging their son was shown pornographic videos on a school-issued iPad."It wasn't a personal cell phone. It wasn't a personal iPad. It was school equipment and the school internet," said the boy's mother, Jennifer Haag.The lawsuit claims two older male students showed Haag's son inappropriate videos during a free class period at River Ridge Middle School in New Port Richey. She said this continued for three months."It was considered a recess for the special needs children, all different ages for middle schoolers and they were just allowed to have free time," Haag said.The lawsuit states the incident happened in 2015 when the student was 11-years old. The lawsuit claims the student has suffered mental and emotional harm. The lawsuit also claims the iPads had "inadequate security features allowing students to access obscene and pornographic materials."Haag said her son told a teacher that students were viewing these videos."He finally got the courage to go to the adult that was supervising and try to tell him bad things were going on and he was told to 'stop being a tattle tale' and to go play," said Haag.Haag said she hopes school leaders pay better attention."I was absolutely devastated and heartbroken. NEW YORK (AP) — A new federal report shows vaping rates among U.S. teenagers fell dramatically this year.The drop comes in the wake of last year's outbreak of vaping-related illnesses and deaths.The national survey found that just under 20% of high school students and 5% of middle schools students were recent users of electronic cigarettes and other vaping products.That marks a big decline from a similar survey last year that found about 28% of high school students and about 11% of middle school students recently vaped. That's a decline of about 1.8 million teens total.The survey was done by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They looked at survey data from middle school and high school students, grades 6-12.Despite the progress in lowering the number of teens using e-cigarettes, there are 3.6 million youth who currently use them. Of those, almost 83% use flavored e-cigarettes or vaping products.In addition to the survey, the FDA announced their premarket review requirement of tobacco products to ensure they go through a “robust scientific evaluation” before hitting store shelves. 1156
