SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A growing number of apps and online video games are creating new opportunities for hate groups to recruit young people with little oversight, experts say.The information comes about a month after a 19-year-old honors student allegedly shot four people inside a Poway synagogue, killing one person.Dr. Peter Simi, a Chapman University professor who has studied hate groups for more than 20 years, say they are feeling emboldened in a way not seen before. Simi pointed to the charged anti-immigration and anti-Muslim rhetoric that has become mainstream has given the groups new confidence. "We have a long history of these groups that we don't talk nearly enough about because we're in kind of the denial game," Simi said. "The last several years, the white supremacist movement is emboldened in a way that certainly goes beyond anything I've seen in 24 years."RELATED: Shooting at Poway synagogue leaves one dead, three injuredSimi said the groups will use a soft-sell method, drawing people in with subtle white supremacist ideas. They use that introduction as an avenue for further discussion before growing more explicit. The groups, which have posted fliers on San Diego college campuses, are also recruiting young people through apps and video games.For instance, a suspected hate group targeted Ben Hedgspeth's 17-year-old son through a meme app."They were coming from a particular religious background and they were trying to recruit him into their online chat space," he said. "It frustrates me to know that those people are out there approaching our children."Simi said ignoring the groups won't work and schools aren't always doing enough. To start, subscription programs like Circle and Bark can do things like filter content and set limits. Bark will also alert parents to communication such as hate speech, sex acts and depression. But there's one place safeguards still lag: Video games. Bark Chief Parenting Officer Titania Jordan said it's because people communicate verbally - via headset - on popular online games like Fortnite, Roadblocks and Minecraft. She said children need to be instructed never to divulge any personally identifying information that can make them easy to locate, and then lured into a private chat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego county father is speaking out about his family's close call caught on video during an off-road race down in Baja, but the driver behind the wheel says it's not what it looks like. Earlier in April, Matt Scarpuzzi of Alpine and hundreds of other drivers were participating in the "San Felipe 250" when he says another driver deliberately drove through a group of spectators, including his wife and two young children. In this type of racing drivers can deviate from the set course as long as they make it to the checkpoints, so technically it wasn't against the rules."I couldn't believe that was the best decision, in my opinion, it jeopardizes the fan safety and it jeopardizes a sport that I love," said Scarpuzzi.The man behind the wheel, B-J Baldwin, spoke to 10News and said it looks worse than it actually was.  "I had 100 percent visibility, I knew where everybody was at, knew everybody was safe. Again I was only going about 2 miles an hour when I drove through these tents," Baldwin said. He posted the video on his Facebook page and offered to replace anything he damaged. "I assured everybody that no one was in danger and I was very very careful when trying to re-enter the course and access the course," said Baldwin.  1317

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person was hit and killed following a crash in San Diego late Saturday night. CHP says a driver lost control and crashed on SR-94 just west of I-805 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. According to officers, the driver then got out of the car and started walking to an off-ramp when they were hit by another vehicle. The victim died at the scene, CHP says. The car that hit the victim fled the scene. At this time, it’s unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors in either crash. 506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A rash of mail tampering incidents has led to missing money and an unusual M.O.On Winnebago Avenue in late June, Kelly Craig was standing in front of her home talking to a neighbor."Around 10:30 a.m., the mail carrier dropped off the mail in front of me," said Craig.A few minutes later, Craig got her mail and noticed something. One of her envelopes was sliced open on the side. "Looks like a razor blade slit the side," said Craig.Inside, she found a birthday card from her mother, mailed from Montana. The usual money was not there. A call to mom revealed 0 in cash should have been inside."Felt panicked and really sad the money was missing, and my mom was really upset," said Craig.Craig wasn't alone. That same day, less than two miles away, her daughter-in-law went to get her mail."She got a wedding card from my sister, and it had cash in it as well," said Craig.The 0 that was inside was gone. That envelope was also sliced open on the left side, but there was one difference. The side and back of the enveloped were resealed with tape."Clearly trying to cover up their stealing of the money," said Craig.When Craig and her daughter-in-law reported it to postal authorities, they say they were told of similar recent incidents, including one if the College Area. On the Nextdoor app , several neighbors also reporting similar incidents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A program through the County's office of Child Welfare Services is making sure every kid in the foster program gets to celebrate this holiday season.The "Home for the Holidays" program pairs kids in the foster shelters with families for a holiday, so they don't have to spend the holiday alone."This is a great opportunity for families to kind of try it out and see what it's like to work with our youth," says Kimberly Giardina, the Director of Child Welfare Services.Right now, San Diego County has about 140 kids in the foster program that need a foster family. While this program doesn't give them a long-term solution, it helps the kids through a difficult season."People open their homes," says Giardina. "They see that our youth are just like every other kid in the neighborhood."Nanci Weinstein, who has fostered three kids through the county and adopted one, says it's an experience that's invaluable for both the kids and the families."I can't imagine what that might feel like for a child," she says. "Every moment is precious because this child is in a situation where they need someone to take care of them."Families interested in participating in the Home for the Holidays program need to complete a background check, home safety inspection, training and orientation.
