For students at Jackson Memorial Middle School in Ohio, Tuesday wasn't a normal day. When a seventh-grade student pulled out a gun and shot himself, students began to panic.  Airyonna Haggerty, who is a sixth grader at the school, described the moment teachers told her to get inside the classroom. The 12-year-old heard teachers screaming to get inside the classroom and the next thing she knew, she was hiding and crouching down with her fellow peers near the teacher's desk."I dropped everything. My phone, my chrome book, my book bag and me and my friends ran into the classroom and then we all hid. We were probably there for about 20 minutes," said Haggerty. The principal of the school knocked on the classroom door and told the students and teacher that everyone had to go to another class."We started gathering our stuff and went into the hallway. Then we went to go open the door and it was locked," said Haggerty. "We heard people banging on it so we ran and we got scared."RELATED: Father of Jackson Township student says he put body armor in son's book bag over the weekend7th-grader shoots himself at Jackson Memorial Middle School in Stark County 1192

In 1965, "Bozo's Big Top" became a syndicated series in local markets across the country.Avruch played Bozo from 1959 to 1970 and was the first nationally syndicated version of the clown. For the first time since the Camp Fire started its deadly rampage 11 days ago, firefighters will get a big assist from rain. The 4 to 6 inches expected later this week will help suppress an inferno that has already killed at least 77 people. It'll also finally improve the heavily polluted and unhealthy air smothering Northern California. But there's a catch: With more than 150,000 acres of newly scorched earth, there's little vegetation to soak up the rain. That means the region is now at risk of mudslides, which could be especially dangerous for firefighters battling the inferno."They're having to fight this fire right now in the mountainous areas -- the ravines, the canyons, very steep, rugged terrain," said Scott McLean, deputy chief for Cal Fire -- the state's forestry and fire protection agency."They're back there on dirt roads, dirt trails, trying to fight this fire. Now it's going to turn into mud, which will be another hazard for them to contend with."Along with mudslides comes the risk of debris flow gushing from the Camp Fire's charred rubble."Recently burned areas could see ash flow ... and even have the potential for debris flow if rain intensity is high enough," the National Weather Service's Sacramento office said.Since the Camp Fire broke out November 8, it's destroyed more than 10,500 homes and torched an area the size of Chicago.Even worse: Fire officials predict the Camp Fire is only halfway done burning. According to Cal Fire, the blaze might not be fully contained until November 30.  1538

FORT MYERS, Fla., - A new class is coming to Florida Gulf Coast University and it's raising eyebrows. The class is called ‘White Racism’ and will be offered in the Spring. “I thought the name was a little dramatic,” student Jamar Arrindell said. “It's been a growing topic of conversation."The topic took center stage at an open forum Thursday night titled “Race, Immigration and White Supremacy in the Post-Obama era.”“I saw the flyer for the event and had to come,” said Vanessa Fernandez, a former FGCU student. "I think it's important for us to talk through it so we can understand each other's sides”Dr. Ted Thornhill, a sociology professor, will be teaching the course."I understand why some people might be uncomfortable by the title," he said. "But in order to move the conversation forward people have to get comfortable with getting uncomfortable." Thornhill said the new course wasn’t developed in response to racially charged messages found around campus last fall, but to give students a broad idea of the history of racism, white supremacy and how to challenge racism in today’s society. “Silence is not the answer," he said. "Conversation, knowledge, education is the answer and that's what I'm hoping to provide students with the opportunity to gain.”The course was expanded from 35 to 50 students due to high demand, and it’s currently at capacity. 1402
