A Michigan high school marching band had no football team to play for, but not too far away, a football team needed a band. Luckily, they found each other and completed the perfect pair. The match was made last Friday night when the Glen Lake Lakers football team heard that their neighboring Forest Area Marching Band had no one to play for after their football team's season was canceled -- Forest Area suspended its season due to low player participation. So, the Lakers invited the band to come play at theirs."No Friday night football game under those lights is complete without your sideline cheer team and a marching band," Mark Mattson, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Glen Lake, told CNN.Thrilled at the opportunity to perform for a crowd, the band quickly learned the Lakers' fight song. Meanwhile, an hour away, Glen Lake was adding extra seating and erecting tents to ward off the impending rain."They were just over the moon excited to go be able to play at a different location," Forest Area Principal Kelly Holeman told CNN. "It was something new and fun."The night ended in a victory for Glen Lake, played out against the backdrop of the music they've been lacking all season long. The Glen Lake athletic director said that the band undoubtedly made an impact on the atmosphere of the night."It didn't take long for the two schools to connect and become one in supporting each others' cause," Mattson said. He added they were welcome back anytime. 1485

A subtle design feature of the AR-15 rifle has raised a technical legal question that is derailing cases against people who are charged with illegally buying and selling the gun’s parts or building the weapon. At issue is whether a key piece of one of America’s most popular firearms meets the definition of a gun that prosecutors have long relied on.For decades, the federal government has treated a mechanism called the lower receiver as the essential piece of the semiautomatic rifle, which has been used in some of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings. Prosecutors regularly bring charges based on that specific part. But some defense attorneys have recently argued that the part alone does not meet the definition in the law. Federal law enforcement officials, who have long been concerned about the discrepancy, are increasingly worried that it could hinder some criminal prosecutions and undermine firearms regulations nationwide.“Now the cat is out of the bag, so I think you’ll see more of this going on,” said Stephen Halbrook, an attorney who has written books on gun law and history. “Basically, the government has gotten away with this for a long time.”Cases involving lower receivers represent a small fraction of the thousands of federal gun charges filed each year. But the loophole has allowed some people accused of illegally selling or possessing the parts, including convicted felons, to escape prosecution. The issue also complicates efforts to address so-called ghost guns, which are largely untraceable because they are assembled from parts.Since 2016, at least five defendants have challenged the government and succeeded in getting some charges dropped, avoiding prison or seeing their cases dismissed entirely. Three judges have rejected the government’s interpretation of the law, despite dire warnings from prosecutors.Federal 1866

A poll released Monday evening by SSRS commissioned by CNN indicates that a majority of Americans might be in support of removing President Donald Trump from office via a Senate trial. The poll, which randomly sampled 1,156 Americans showed that 51% supported Trump's removal compared to 45% who opposed Trump's removal. This was the first time that the SSRS/CNN poll showed more than 50% support in removing Trump from office. In December, polling indicated that 45% supported removing Trump, compared to 47% who opposed it. The composition of Monday's poll was 32% Democratic, 26% Republican and 42% independent or members of another party.Monday's poll gauging support for removal was within the margin of error, which was 3.4%. The poll showed for the second-straight month that Trump's approval rating was 43%, although the survey showed a difference between men and women. Trump's approval rating among men was 50% versus 35% among women. To view the details of the poll, click 996

After weeks of relatively warm conditions for much of the Midwest and Northeast, a major snow storm has the Midwest and Northeast in its sights. Blizzard warnings have been issued for parts of the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. Winter storm warnings are in effect for parts of Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Other parts of the Midwest and Northeast are under winter weather advisories or winter storm watches. One major impact the winter storm is having is on the presidential campaign. Several campaign events have been canceled ahead of the storm. Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg have canceled events scheduled for Iowa. The storm is expected to drop 4 to 8 inches in a large swath from Nebraska to Maine. Some areas could also see freezing rain. Note: This article previously noted that Amy Klobuchar's event in Minneapolis had been canceled. The event will still take place Friday evening. 984
