(KGTV) - The purchase of a dream home nearly turned into a nightmare for a Carlsbad family, as they narrowly avoided a costly escrow scam.In late July, Greg Shoman and his wife were just days from closing on a four-bedroom home when he thought he got an email from his escrow officer with wiring instructions for the down payment to be sent that day. In the email, the escrow officer said she was busy and could only talk by email, before sending him a calculation of the closing costs. "You see so many emails and documents during the process, and you start to become numb to it ... Everything on the email - from the masthead to the signature - looked like the emails we had been receiving from the escrow company during the process," said Shoman.Shoman went to his bank to wire the money. His bank happened to be the same bank the money was to be transferred to, and the bank confirmed the routing number matched a non-business account in Wisconsin, not a California escrow company. After a call to the real escrow company, he learned the emails were fakes."Surprised and angry, and then ultimately relieved you didn't give away several hundred thousand dollars," said Shoman. Shoman isn't alone. According to the FBI, Americans lost 0 million to real estate fraud last year. In many cases, the scammer identifies pending home sales through the MLS and real estate sites and hacks the emails of someone involved in the sale, before sending out false wiring instructions."Be aware, be vigilant, and call your escrow company. Don't be afraid to triple check," said Shoman's realtor, Ilana Huff of Pacific Sotheby's.Shoman says the FBI is investigating his case. He says a closer look at the emails revealed the email address in the scam message was different from the email address of the real escrow officer. 1838

CAMP PENDLETON (KGTV) - Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is balancing mitigating risk of exposure to the coronavirus with training to keep Marines ready for deployment."Changes of command are smaller, retirements are smaller," Col. Jeff Holt, Deputy Commander for Marine Corps Installations West, Camp Pendleton, said.At changes of command, Marines are masked and six feet apart, and large formations are no more."We have mitigation measures to protect our people but life's not perfect, life gets in the way. We have to overcome those obstacles and challenges because we have a greater mission and that is to our nation," Col. Holt said.The Marines take pride in the 'First to Fight' motto. The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is deployed in Jordan and the 15th MEU is preparing to deploy. Coronavirus is not creating a delay."There are choices that are made to protect the people but also to replicate what we would face in combat because the requirements of the Marine Corps do not stop," Co. Holt said Marines are training the way they would fight overseas.Units are quarantined for two weeks before and after deployment to ensure everyone is healthy. When units are training they are isolating, they do not go home each night. Marines are asked health screening questions and given temperature checks.It's not just training that has changed, the commissary and thrift store have a strict cleaning schedule and safety barriers just like San Diego's grocery stores.Col. Holt said they've been learning from San Diego and took notes, implementing strategies used at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar when flights from Wuhan, China arrived. The plane was carrying U.S. citizens that were stranded in Wuhan because of the coronavirus outbreak.At Camp Pendleton, restaurants are also similar to what you would see around the county. Holt said, "you might have a table of six that only has two people at it and you sit diagonally six-foot across."Gyms are similarly spaced out and cleaned often.Co. They don't, however, love actual cars like hatchbacks and sedans --as Ford has learned.Ford said on Wednesday the only passenger car models it plans to keep on the market in North America will be the Mustang and the upcoming Ford Focus Active, a crossover-like hatchback that's slated to debut in 2019.That means the Fiesta, Taurus, Fusion and the regular Focus will disappear in the United States and Canada.Ford will, however, continue to offer its full gamut of trucks, SUVs and crossovers.By 2020, "almost 90 percent of the Ford portfolio in North America will be trucks, utilities and commercial vehicles," the press release says. "The company is also exploring new 'white space' vehicle silhouettes that combine the best attributes of cars and utilities, such as higher ride height, space and versatility."By "white space," the company is referring to vehicles that don't fall neatly into the typical categories.Ford has hinted it might decide to retire much of its sedan portfolio. (KGTV) – It opened with much fanfare back in September, but after a two week period of cancellations February, Carlsbad-based airline, Cal Jet was still dealing with setbacks in early March.“I can’t say that it didn’t [suffer],” said Cal Jet’s President, George Wozniak of their reputation.On Friday, he stood on the tarmac at McClellan-Palomar Airport, personally apologizing to travelers boarding a plane at 4:15 p.m. that had been originally scheduled to leave at 9 a.m.Wozniak said the passengers had been notified of the delay earlier in the day. The plane had experienced mechanical problems the night before and had to fly to Arizona last night for repairs.The delays come after the airline canceled nearly two weeks of flights, beginning just before President’s Day weekend.Wozniak said the plane they use, which is owned by Elite Air, had also been booked by NCAA basketball teams. “It was either a crew or aircraft scheduling problem, where if they had one pilot get ill and not show up, it could throw the whole thing off,” described Wozniak.They could theoretically still use it, but rather than risk more abrupt cancellations, he decided to clear the schedule until they could get the plane back full time.“It was not an easy decision to make,” said Wozniak.Cal Jet’s Yelp page says why.
