TAMPA, Fla. — A creation to help combat the coronavirus from USF Health and Tampa General Hospital is now helping people across the world.When the COVID-19 pandemic started, researchers worked to fill in gaps from the shortages that came with it, including nasal testing swabs.“Unfortunately that component of the test kit was missing because it actually comes from overseas and actually it’s manufactured in northern Italy and if we recall back to March that is where everything was shut down and so that directly impacted our ability to be able to start testing for COVID in the U.S.,” said Summer Decker, Ph.D., the director of 3D clinical applications at USF radiology and TGH.So a team used technology in their lab to create a 3D nasal swab.“We worked with our colleagues here and the department of infectious disease and emergency medicine to be able to come up with an alternative to that swab that was in the test kit that actually was patient safe, comfortable and actually was able to capture that viral test that we needed so badly to do,” said Decker.Quickly, they moved from design to clinical research, partnering with Northwell Health in addition to TGH.“So suddenly we were getting bags and bags of these test kits thousands a week and it’s what saved us and I think in some ways it saved the Tampa Bay area because it allowed our hospital to really keep up this high volume testing,” said Dr. Jason Wilson, the associate medical director of TGH’s emergency department.That clinical trial is now completed.“What we found was pretty amazing. They performed as well and in some cases even better than the traditional swab,” Decker said. “That clinical trial has now come out it’s been published in a top journal for infectious disease.”Wilson said the hospital still uses them when there’s not enough standard of care swabs.The team also shared the information with the swab for other hospitals and agencies facing shortages, so they could create them. Since then, Decker said tens of millions are being used in more than two dozen countries.“It’s pretty incredible to us. We all kind of keep pinching ourselves,” Decker said.She says to her, the swab represents collaboration.“It’s not just a COVID thing. TAMPA, Fla. — Police say that street racing led to the death of a mother struck by a vehicle while pushing her child in a stroller in Tampa, Florida. Three people have been arrested.According to Tampa Police, two cars were street racing down Bayshore Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon when one of the vehicles struck the mother and child near W. Knights Avenue in Tampa.Tampa police say the mother, 24-year-old Jessica Reisinger, and the 2-year-old child were sent to the hospital with serious injuries. Reisinger died at the hospital and the 2-year-old is currently in serious condition.  616

TAMPA, Fla. -- A commercial about child hunger inspired Kennedy McCormick to take action when she just 7 years old.“I felt really bad for the children, so I wanted to do something to help,” said McCormick, now 14.For her birthday that year, she wanted to collect food instead of getting presents.“So we had a party and that’s exactly what happened. Everybody brought food,” said her father, Kelvin.Kennedy has carried on that tradition every year, teaming up with Feeding Tampa Bay to make sure the donations get to those in need.“The more I’ve done it. The more donations I’ve gotten over the years,” said Kennedy.This year with the pandemic, she held a virtual fundraiser, raising about ,000.All her hard work got noticed by General Mills and they surprised her with a donation like she’s never seen before: two truckloads of Cheerios. That’s 48,000 boxes.“I was extra surprised when I saw the truck drive by because I thought it was only going to be the cereal over there and then there was a truck. SYLMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - A freeway sign indicating drivers were using Interstate 5 South fell into traffic lanes Friday afternoon at the start of the holiday travel rush in Sylmar, north of Los Angeles.A driver reported to the California Highway Patrol that most of the sign fell into the middle lanes of I-5 at SR-14 at 1:15 p.m. Some parts of the sign were left dangling from the rigging.At least one driver hit some of the debris, according to the CHP’s online report. There were no reports of any injuries.Officers shut down south I-5 and diverted traffic into truck lanes, backing up the freeway into Santa Clarita.Caltrans crews removed the dangling sign and traffic on south I-5 was reopened about 3:30 p.m.The cause of the fall is under investigation. 766
