SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Fire-Rescue is bringing on more firefighters and preparing for a Red Flag Warning and Heat Advisory in the week ahead.Starting Monday Deputy Fire Chief David Gerboth said, "our helicopters will be on 24 hours a day. We're staffing up five additional brush engines. These are engines that are specially designed to work in these rural areas."He explained the engines have off-road capabilities and can fight fire in areas similar to Japatul Valley where the Valley Fire burned more than 9,000 acres in a day.The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for San Diego County mountains and valleys Monday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.A Heat Advisory follows, 10 a.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. Thursday, "91 to 102 degrees for the San Diego valleys."This combination dire according to Gerboth."Near-record high temperatures, a mild Santa Ana event and combine that with our vegetation that burns is reaching critically dry levels. So it's very receptive to burn and it's spreading and burning quickly when it does," Gerboth said.He said now is the time to have a plan in place to evacuate. He said to ensure you know your evacuation route, have a go-bag and have your important documents in one place. It is not too late to clear debris from your rain gutters. San Diego Fire-Rescue Media Services Manager Mónica Mu?oz added you can "remove combustible materials from around your home and also remove dead branches and leaves from trees and foliage near your home."Mu?oz said this is not the time to use power tools to clear brush on your property, as you could spark a fire.Gerboth said if you see smoke or feel unsafe do not wait to evacuate. 1670

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Thursday that the city is expected to see a major decline in tax revenue due to the coronavirus. Faulconer said the city usually takes in an estimated 0 million in sales tax throughout the fiscal year. This year, however, the city is expected to lose million in sales tax alone. Similarly, Faulconer added that the city could lose as much as million in tourism tax. The news comes the day after the famous Hotel del Coronado announced its closure amid the COVID-19 pandemic. RELATED: Hotel del Coronado suspends operations amid coronavirusIn total, Faulconer said current projections put the city at a 9 million dollar loss for the fiscal year, which ends June 30. "We have been saving for a rainy day. This is a hurricane," Faulconer said. The mayor said the federal stimulus package making its way through Washington should offer some help, but urged lawmakers to further help cities financially. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Rallies were held in six different states in what organizers are calling "The March for Reparations to African people."Crowds gathered at the waterfront in downtown San Diego Saturday afternoon wearing masks with signs in hand.Among them was Wendy Craig, who is part of the UHURU Solidarity Movement, the group that organized the rally. Craig says they’re calling on people to do more acting and less talking. RELATED: California moves to consider reparations for slaveryShe says they are doing, "a call out to white people to say it’s not enough to say that you support Black power. You have to take a material stand of solidarity and turn over the stolen resources."Craig says many people that registered to participate in this event also raised money towards a collective reparations goal. She says there’s been an increase in involvement this year, which she believes is attributed to current events. "Four years ago when we organized a march for reparations we did not have a lot of success. But that was shifted through the George Floyd protests, and Breonna Taylor. That shift has brought a lot of unity to what we’re doing," Craig said.Collectively, this organization had set a goal of raising ,000. Craig says they’ve surpassed that and will continue to raise money for this fund. 1319
