It's been more than a century since Babe Ruth started his baseball career, but the Bambino is still breaking records.A Babe Ruth New York Yankees jersey from 1928-1930 fetched .64 million at auction Saturday, making it the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold, according to the auction house. The previous record was a 1920 Babe Ruth jersey that went for .4 million. The record-breaking jersey was part of a collection of artifacts related to "The Sultan of Swat," as Ruth was also known, sold by Hunt Auctions at Yankee Stadium. The auction house said in a statement that it partnered with the baseball legend's family and had select additions from "elite third-party collections" for the massive display."Babe's collection has remained largely unknown to the general public and we felt it was time to bring these amazing pieces of his life to light," Linda Ruth Tosetti, Ruth's granddaughter, said in a news release. The auction house certainly hit a home run with this collection, though it wasn't a huge shock."While the record-setting prices attained today are certainly astonishing, I am not surprised at all given the incredible materials and the mythical status the Babe holds in the history of this country," David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, said in a news release.Ruth's legendary baseball career spanned 22 seasons and included 714 home runs and four World Series titles, according to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. While he's known for playing for the Yankees, Ruth also spent time with the Boston Red Sox and Boston Braves. In 1936, he became one of the five inaugural members elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. 1668

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.V. – A number of employees of the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation have been suspended amid an investigation into a photograph showing a training class apparently giving a Nazi salute, officials said. The image shows the class members each with a raised arm as the text above reads "HAIL BYRD!" The faces of the trainees and several other people have been blurred out.The text refers to a training instructor for the class, said the state Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, which released the photo.Jeff S. Sandy, cabinet secretary for the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, condemned the salute."It is distasteful, hurtful, disturbing, highly insensitive, and completely inappropriate," he wrote in a letter. "It undermines the high standards that have been set for our Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation. It betrays the professionalism I have seen time and time again displayed and practiced by our brave correctional employees."Sen. Joe Manchin said: "This behavior warrants an immediate investigation and anyone who participated in any hateful and disgusting action should not be able to work for or be paid by the federal or state government and should be removed from their position immediately," he said. While several employees have been suspended, Division of Corrections Commissioner Betsy Jividen has also directed that all copies of the photo be destroyed or otherwise taken out of circulation "to keep its harm from spreading," Sandy said. The department informed faith and community leaders of the incident and asked for their help in addressing the situation including with recommending changes or additions to training programs, Sandy wrote. 1746

JPMorgan Chase, which is the parent company of Chase Bank, announced this week plans to make it easier for those with criminal pasts to be considered for employment with the company. As part of JPMorgan Chase's new initiative, the company will no longer ask employees to reveal if they have a criminal past during the application process. The company said this initiative allows for those with criminal backgrounds to receive the same consideration as any other applicant, when their background has no bearing on job requirements. The company said that in 2018, the company hired 2,100 people with criminal backgrounds, which represented 10 percent of all new hires for the year. JPMorgan Chase said those hired generally had been charged with low level offenses such as disorderly conduct, personal drug possession and DUI. These applicants were hired for positions in entry-levels jobs such as transaction processing, and lending and account servicing.“Business has a responsibility to partner with policy, business and community leaders to create an economy that works for more people. When someone cannot get their foot in the door to compete for a job, it is bad for business and bad for communities that need access to economic opportunity,” said JPMorgan Chase Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon in a statement. “Giving more people a second chance allows businesses to step-up and do their part to reduce recidivism, hire talented workers, and strengthen the economy.”The financial services company's decision to ban the box is part of a broader initiative to advocate for reforms to make it easier for those with criminal backgrounds to be part of the workforce. JPMorgan Chase said it will advocate for restoration of Pell Grants to those with criminal pasts, training for people with criminal backgrounds, and support reforms to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's (FDIC) hiring rules. "The FDIC believes that at a minimum, each insured institution should establish a screening process that provides the insured institution with information concerning any convictions or program entry pertaining to a job applicant. This process would include, for example, the completion of a written employment application that requires a listing of all convictions and program entries," the FDIC said in a statement in 2018.JPMorgan Chase's plan has earned the support of two U.S. governors: Utah Governor Gary Herbert and Delaware Governor John Carney. “In Delaware, we know it’s important to offer our neighbors a second chance, to allow Delawareans who have a criminal history to compete for a job and contribute to our success as a state,” said Delaware Governor John Carney. “That’s why we are excited about these initiatives from JPMorgan Chase – a major employer in Delaware. The company is already making important progress on its commitment to hire Delawareans and Americans with criminal backgrounds, which is incredibly important. These additional community investments, and the company’s leadership on second chance policy initiatives, will help build on that progress in our state and across the country.”For more information on JPMorgan Chase's new initiative, click 3186
