CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Popular South Bay brewery Novo Brazil is expanding its footprint in Chula Vista this month.Novo Brazil Brewery will hold a grand opening for its new brewpub on Dec. 11 in Otay Ranch Town Center. The 12,000-square-foot spot can host more than 950 guests and features a 300-seat restaurant, full bar, indoor and outdoor beer garden, two 14-foot-by-10-foot televisions, shuffleboard tables, and a kid's area with ping-pong tables, video games, and other activities.RELATED: Ballast Point purchased by Chicago-based brewerOn the production side, the brewpub boasts 60 taps with about 40 of those dispensing beer and the rest a combination of Novo's kombucha and hard seltzer creations. Canned cocktails are also in the works for the brewery. In addition to the restaurant and bar, the location will also house a five-barrel brewing system and fermentation tanks.“Our goal is to shift the axis of brewing tourism to southern San Diego attracting downtown and northern San Diego residents and tourists to experience our work and our community. With other local breweries we can put Chula Vista on the map as an official destination of the beer and gastronomic map,” said Tiago Carneiro, founder of Novo Brazil Brewery.Carneiro says they intend to brew more than 100 different beers using the massive system in their first year alone. The new brewery will allow Novo to brew specialty beers and test new recipes. RELATED: San Diego craft beer study shows craft brewery, economic impact growthA small retail section inside to brewpub will also offer Brazilian products, like coffee, to buy.To capture Brazil's colorful flair, Novo's owners hired Brazilian architect, Gustavo Penna, to help develop the brewpub's design. The result is a black and white wave pattern across the building — inside and out— representative of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach. The bar, which owners say is the longest in the South Bay, curls around the facility and guests can kick back in furniture made from Brazilian wood around unique murals from Brazilian artists.“Our story began in Brazil, where we learned the art of brewing and created the most awarded brewery in South America," Carneiro said. "We believe our difference is our Brazilian way of showing the colorful culture and happiness of four homelands. We were fortunate to find a sister city in South Bay, named after our hometown of Belo Horizonte (Beautiful Horizon), where we were warmly welcomed by the entire community."RELATED: Craft beer scene brewing in Chula VistaCarneiro says that Brazilian style of brewing is what earned his family the most awarded beers in Brazil and 17 international beer awards just three years after opening their first South Bay spot.Novo's original location also continues to serve fans on Lane Avenue in Chula Vista. 2825

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Hundreds of thousands of veterans and active duty military call San Diego County home, but a group says they are facing big disadvantages when trying to buy a house here. The San Diego Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals says more than 60 percent of listings in the county won't accept offers with V.A. loans. The federally backed loans don't require a down payment or mortgage insurance. Those eligible in San Diego County can borrow up to about 0,000 without any cash down. "We have served, and the V.A. loan is a guaranteed loan," said Andre Hobbs, a San Diego realtor and veteran who heads the association.Hobbs says the benefit is backfiring for some home seekers in San Diego's ultra-competitive housing market. It's because he says sellers are opting for offers instead that include cash down payment because of a misperception about V.A. applicants."They assume that this buyer is ready to walk," Hobbs said. "He's not motivated."Mark Goldman, a real-estate lecturer at San Diego State University, said there are some misconceptions about V.A. loans, such as that they are more complex. He added there are a few extra disclosures, but they aren't cumbersome. But V.A. buyers can also have an advantage if the current owner also served in the military."Luckily we may meet another veteran seller that understands, 'hey, I'm willing to do that,'" Hobbs said.    1460

China said Friday it will temporarily reduce tariffs on imports of American-made cars as it tries to negotiate a trade deal with the United States.Citing the meeting earlier this month between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the Chinese Finance Ministry said in a statement that it will remove the additional 25% tariffs on car imports from the United States for three months starting January 1. That will bring China's tariffs on American-made cars to 15%, in line with those for cars made in other countries.China also said it would suspend its 5% tariff on 67 other auto parts.China imposed the additional tariffs on US cars in July and on some auto parts in September as part of its retaliation in the trade war between the two countries. At their meeting in Argentina, Trump and Xi agreed to a temporary truce while they try to negotiate a broad trade deal over the next 90 days.In its statement Friday, the Finance Ministry described the decision to remove the tariffs as a "concrete action" aimed at helping to bring about a "mutually beneficial new Sino-US trade order."Xi pledged in April that China would cut tariffs on imported cars this year. His government delivered on that promise in July, reducing import taxes from 25% to 15%.But just days later, China imposed new additional tariffs of 25% on American-made passenger vehicles as the trade war with the United States escalated. The tariffs hurt profits of major automakers that ship cars to China from the United States. Germany's BMW and Daimler, the owner of Mercedes-Benz, have been hit particularly hard. Shares of BMW (BMWYY) and Daimler (DDAIF) both trimmed early Friday losses on the news. The stocks had spiked last week after Trump tweeted that China was going to cut auto tariffs.General Motors (GM) and some other automakers already have a large presence in China through partnerships with local manufacturers. It has become the largest and most important market for the American auto industry. Because their plants are in the country, they weren't subject to big import taxes.Yet China's tariffs have hurt exports from US auto plants. The value of US passenger car exports to China has fallen by .4 billion, or 30%, over the course of the first nine months of the year.Part of that could be because of slowing Chinese auto sales. Yet overall sales of American cars in China -— including those made in China — are down only about 1% so far this year.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Long before Chula Vista became San Diego County's second-largest city, it was rural farmland with citrus groves from San Diego Bay to Otay Mountain. "It was known as the lemon capital of the world," says Chula Vista history librarian Tanya Carr. Lemons, oranges, and lots of celery once dominated Chula Vista’s landscape. That began to change in 1911 when Chula Vista was officially incorporated as a California city. "Those lemon fields were replaced by Third Avenue, and that was our big main street in Chula Vista," adds Carr.See complete coverage of Life in Chula VistaFarming established Chula Vista's diverse culture but World War II began the city's rapid rise in population."I'm considered what's called the Navy brat," says Harry Orgovan. Harry Orgovan is the president of the South Bay Historical Society and the Chula Vista Heritage Museum. His family and many other military families like his moved to Chula Vista during the war, tripling the population from 5,000 residents to 16,000 by 1950. "In a sense, life was simpler back then and more innocent," adds Orgovan. World War II brought an industrial revolution to Chula Vista. The Rohr Aircraft Corporation opened with as many as 11,000 employees building power units for the B-24 Liberator. "You hear Rohr and just about every other person you talk to in Chula Vista either worked for Rohr, retired from Rohr, had family that worked for Rohr, and it provided thousands of jobs for the community," says Carr.TIMELINE: Chula Vista through the yearsWhen men left to fight in the war, women took over in the factories, changing the workforce as we know it. After the war, Chula Vista saw even more growth. It was a melting pot of Caucasians, Japanese, Filipinos, Mexicans, and more.Shelley Rudd, a Chula Vistan since age two, was also an elementary school teacher and witnessed the diverse culture first hand."I love the diversity of Chula Vista,” says Rudd. “I would have from five to seven primary languages in my classroom every year."As for notables, Chula Vista is home to Rita Hayworth, Mario Lopez, the 2009 Little League World Series Champs, and the Olympic Training Center. The city's best days may be yet to come with the much-anticipated development of the Chula Vista Bayfront."It's going to put us on the map as a thriving, culturally diverse, desirable tourist destination," says Carr with a big smile. 2416

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man seen in a viral video being arrested by San Diego Police pleaded not guilty to theft charges Thursday. Trenelle Cannon will be in court again on Friday for reportedly resisting arrest. He is currently being held on ,000 bail. A 12-second-long video that surfaced on social media showed Cannon being struck by police officers. Video later released by police showed what happened in the moments leading up the incident. In the bodycam and helicopter video, Cannon can be seen tackling a police officer before other officers get involved. RELATED: Watch: San Diego Police respond to violent arrest videoCannon was arrested on warrants in Chula Vista Tuesday at about 6 p.m., according to his mother. He was booked into jail and charged with carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, robbery, and identity theft, according to SDPD."A 12 second video of this arrest was shared on social media without any context or details provided," police said in a news release.According to police, undercover officers had been conducting surveillance of Cannon on the 600 block of E Street in Chula Vista when they requested uniform officers to arrest him. SDPD Chief David Nisleit said Cannon then fled from officers, forcing police to give chase. At some point during the chase, a weapon was recovered where a witness last saw Cannon.Nisleit said Cannon was located once again in the area of 1100 4th Ave., where he got into a car with four others. The vehicle then proceeded to get onto Interstate 5, where officers conducted a traffic stop.During the traffic stop, Nisleit said Cannon tackled an officer to the ground, prompting multiple officers to assist in an arrest. Nisleit said officers feared Cannon had another weapon and used a "combination of physical force and distraction strikes" to restrain him."This is a very important key to note, once restrained and no longer a threat to officers no additional force was used on Cannon," Nisleit said.Nisleit said Cannon and the officers involved were not injured, aside from slight abrasions.Internal Affairs detectives were notified of the arrest and will evaluate officers' use of force and whether they followed policy. Based on the social media video and body-camera video, Nisleit said that he believed the appropriate amount of force was used by officers.Shakira Smith, who identifies herself as Cannon’s girlfriend, as well as Cannon’s mother spoke at a news conference Wednesday.Smith said she and Cannon were in a car with several friends when they were pulled over. She claims Cannon was pulled out of the car before being thrown to the ground. She then says officers piled on top of him.Smith made no mention of what happened before the couple got into the car, when police say Cannon led them on a chase, allegedly dropping a gun along the way. After screaming at police, Smith says she started recording the arrest. As she was recording, Smith says police told her: “put your phone away, you can’t do that.”The family and others said they wouldn't answer any questions following the news conference. 3103
