SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 36,000 pounds of cocaine seized in the Eastern Pacific Ocean will be offloaded Tuesday from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf onto San Diego’s B Street Pier.The contraband is from 17 busts on smuggling vessels off the coasts of Central and South America, officials said. Five Coast Guard cutters were involved in the seizures between early February and early March.Rear Adm. Todd Sokalzuk, the 11th Coast Guard District commander who oversees the law enforcement phase of counter-smuggling operations in the Eastern Pacific region, said the Coast Guard is seizing record amounts of cocaine for the third year in a row.“I’m proud of the hard work and dedication of my crew, as well as the crews of Coast Guard Cutters Bear, Diligence, Harriet Lane, Venturous and the joint and interagency personnel who work hand-in-hand to secure our nation,” said Capt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved Poway tradition is facing accusations of animal cruelty and breaking the law.A lawsuit filed this week claims horses were illegally shocked in the 2018 Poway Rodeo to cause them to buck wildly for crowds. Two animal activist groups filed the suit; Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) and Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL).Investigators with SHARK captured video during the 2018 Poway Rodeo, which they say proves an illegal device was used. The video appears to show someone with the rodeo shocking a horse in the holding chute just before releasing them into the rodeo arena.California law outlaws an electric prod or similar device from being used on any animal once the animal is in the holding chute, unless necessary to protect the participants and spectators of the rodeo.The plaintiffs are seeking a temporary restraining order before September's rodeo in hopes to get a court order preventing these devices from used.The animal groups notified the San Diego Humane Society of the alleged abuse, but humane law officers say they got the complaint too late to do a proper investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A driver was killed and several teens were injured Tuesday night in a high-speed solo vehicle crash along State Route 905 in south San Diego.The crash happened on the westbound lanes near the Beyer Boulevard off-ramp about 9:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The driver lost control of the dark-colored Chrysler 300, struck the center divide, and was ejected from the car. The victim was declared dead at the scene. It was initially reported that the driver, a 21-year-old male, was a teenager. Firefighters worked to extricate two passengers trapped in the rear passenger seats, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.The injured victims, three males and two females ranging in age between 15- to 21-years-old, were transported to UCSD and Scripps Mercy for their injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time.CHP officers are investigating if drugs, alcohol, or distracted driving contributed to the crash.Investigators are asking anyone that witnessed the crash to contact the California Highway Patrol.The Beyer Boulevard on-ramp to the westbound state Route 905 was shut down until at least midnight, according to the CHP. 1191

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A fan was removed from Petco Park Wednesday, after using "foul language" toward a player.As the San Diego Padres took on the Arizona Diamondbacks, the unnamed fan berated a player on the field. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A former Yuma Police officer charged with raping a woman in San Diego is coming face to face with his accuser’s mother. Jared Elkins didn’t flinch in court Tuesday as his wife’s cousin accused him of raping her over and over in her Kensington home. The woman says she didn’t yell because the former officer threatened to kill her. After the rape, the victim said in court that she ran into her mother’s room and escaped out a window. Her mother’s 911 call played in court Tuesday. Elkins’ wife was asleep across the hall. Police body cam footage showed the accuser hysterical in the back of the police car. The woman can be heard telling the officer how afraid she was. Elkins argued that the sex was consensual and the rape charges were made out of guilt. Elkins pleaded not guilty. His attorney said he used bad judgement but the sex was consensual and the two were drinking.He’s facing nine felony counts including forcible rape and could serve 14 years in prison if convicted.
