For months, many of us have done what we can to keep ourselves and families safe from the coronavirus.We have stayed home from events, worked from home and exercised caution when running errands, but for people who are obese, some have gravitated towards weight loss surgery as a way to protect themselves.According to medical experts, complications from COVID-19 can disproportionately affect people who are obese. In an August study, the Cleveland Clinic found patients with a body mass index of 30 or higher were found to be at a significantly higher risk for severe COVID-19, and those with a BMI of 35 and higher had a dramatically increased risk of death.“It’s been shown that people do worse with viral infections when they’re obese,” said Dr. Michael Snyder, medical director of bariatric surgery at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. “In addition, the success of a vaccine is limited in people that are obese, for any viral vaccine historically.”That August study by the Cleveland Clinic also found that when patients with obesity lose at least 5% to 10% of their weight, their risk of cardiovascular disease drops and their survival rate improves. Perhaps, that is why so many have decided to have different types of bariatric surgery to control their weight.“Obesity is really a pro-inflammatory condition and we think it really affects your T cell response; your ability to appropriately attack infection,” said Dr. Snyder.Amanda Kines-Phillips is one of those people. In February, she had wanted to get her weight more under control and decided to go through with a mini gastric bypass surgery. However, because of COVID-19 and the ban on elective surgeries, Kines-Phillips’ surgery was pushed back to July.In the four months since her mini gastric bypass, she has lost 55 pounds and feels healthier and better about health in case she contracts the virus.“I have two small daughters that I need to be there for the rest of my life and to be the best mom that I can be,” she said. “So to me [this surgery] is a life-changing tool.”Dr. Snyder says during a typical week, he performs 12 to 15 surgeries to help people control their weight. Pack your worries.  Every day, billions of germs are left all over Southwest Florida International Airport.Biology professor Cliff Renk from Florida Gulf Coast University and student Matt Glass joined us as we took a microscopic look at all the germs we encounter when we fly into and out of the airport. The professor swabbed all sorts of surfaces and using a monitor that counts the number of germs. A reading of 300 on the meter indicates a normal amount of bacteria.One elevator button registered 418. The handles on those luggage carts: a nasty 532.  Escalator handles were about the same but loaded with bacteria colonies. The buttons on the ATM machine in the main concourse were home to almost 80 different colonies of bacteria. But that's just the beginning. If you're flying, everyone needs to go through the security checkpoint.  And the bin you place your phone in -- which you hold to your face -- might be the same one the person before it put his shoes in following a visit to the bathroom. They could carry staph, which can cause pimples, boils and in some cases flesh-eating bacteria. There are about 1000-1500 TSA plastic bins that we place our stuff in when we go through security. We tested the first bin and its handles; it came in came below the normal level. The second tested at more than two times higher.  The third, well that's a different story. Even though the number was 611, Professor Renk says some stomach-churning germ colonies  - more than 300 - were lurking on board, including fecal bacteria and other bacteria generally found on the bottom of shoes. Reps from both the airport and the TSA tell us it's important we remember any public space is a breeding ground for germs and to bring and use hand sanitizer or wipes at all times.  Finally, they say to wash your hands frequently. And speaking of hands we did one last test on reporter Frank Cipolla's hands to show you what any one of us might be lugging around at any moment. He spent all morning at the airport and shook about a dozen hands. Remember, 300 is a normal reading. His right hand registered about 3000.The TSA says it would cost too much money to put hand sanitizer dispensers in every airport in America, so a warning to all travelers. For the first time in three decades, Best Buy has a new logo.The electronics store launched its new-look logo Wednesday to make it "more modern and easier to read, especially in today's digital world.""The updated logo is true to our heritage, but it's really cleaned up," said Best Buy chief marketing officer Whit Alexander, in a statement. "It's an evolution toward the future, and we're excited about that."The redesigned Best Buy logo still features a yellow tag, but the words "Best Buy" have been pulled out of the tag, and the tag has been shrunk.The new logo is already in use on the Best Buy website and Twitter account. Four San Diego lawmakers are proposing a more than billion solution to stop sewage from Mexico from contaminating South County beaches.The four members of congress, all Democrats, announced the plans at a news conference Monday. Their legislative acts would free up funds to pay for cross border infrastructure projects that would keep sewage from flowing up from the Tijuana River and the Punta Bandera treatment plant. The flow goes into the waters off Imperial Beach and Coronado, and has led to numerous closures. "We have an emergency along the border. It is sewage," said Rep. Juan Vargas, whose 51st district includes Imperial Beach. "Let's quit talking about other things. it's sewage right here, let's do something. We need money, we have the projects. Let's get going." Vargas, joined by Reps. Scott Peters, Susan Davis and Mike Levin, said the will to fix these problems comes down to funding. A bill introduced by Vargas and Peters would increase the North American Development Bank's capital by .5 billion to finance infrastructure projects. Additionally, Levin has introduced legislation to authorize 0 million a year for five years through the Border Water Infrastructure Fund. Mexico would be expected to contribute to the projects financially, but there would be exemptions for financial or national security reasons. Meanwhile, Davis introduced a resolution that encourages the Department of the Navy to take a leading role in the mitigation of cross-border spills that impact national security. A spokesman for Rep. Duncan Hunter, the county's lone Republican member of Congress, said Hunter was reviewing the legislation and would support it if he can. 1689

Forget the shirt and shoes; no service for people on horseback at Starbucks in Anthem, Arizona. A Valley girl is frustrated after trying to ride her horse through the drive-thru when the barista said nay. Aspen Cline had seen internet videos of others riding their horses through the Starbucks drive-thru and decided that's what she wanted to do for her birthday. Instead, she and her horse, Scout, were shut down by the barista who apparently wasn't into horsing around. "We weren't given a reason, just, "we can't take your order," said Aspen. "My friend and I were going to get frappuccinos for us and a cup of whipped cream for the horses." A Starbucks spokesperson told us, officially, their drive-through is for cars only. He said that policy is for animal, rider and employee safety. But, he also added that the horses caught the barista off guard and with a little-advanced notice next time they'll find a way to serve all creatures."We support Starbucks because they're very accepting," said Tandy Cline, Aspen's mom. "So we were kind of disappointed we got thrown to the side from such a great company."  Tandy said they would definitely be reaching back out to Starbucks to see if they can arrange a better experience for Aspen. 1297
